Remember The Grandma Who Accidentally Texted A Teen Inviting Him To Thanksgiving? They Reunite For The 5th Time, This Year Honoring Her Late Husband
Remember that guy who, back in 2016, received a random message from a random woman, claiming to be his grandma, inviting him for Thanksgiving dinner? Their story had some ups and, unfortunately, some downs too, but it’s still continuing.
Recently, the grandma and the “complete stranger” reunited for the fifth time and celebrated the upcoming Thanksgiving. Sadly, it was their first celebration without the mother’s husband around—if you recall, seven months ago, he passed away from COVID-19.
It all started back in 2016, when Wanda accidentally invited Jamal to her Thanksgiving dinner

This story started back in 2016, when Wanda accidentally invited Jamal to her Thanksgiving dinner via text. After the woman figured out that this kid she was texting wasn’t her grandson, she still didn’t shy away from inviting him to join the celebration.
After realizing that she wasn’t talking to her grandson, she invited him to join the celebration anyway

And that’s how Jamal became a regular guest at Wanda’s family’s Thanksgiving dinner. Every year, they would reunite and share some of the happy moments on their social media accounts.

Unfortunately, at the beginning of the pandemic, Wanda and her husband Lonnie were diagnosed with COVID

After a week, Jamal shared the sad news that Lonnie had passed away

This year’s Thanksgiving celebration is the first one without Wanda’s husband around. Recently, Jamal and Wanda reunited for the fifth time, and they even placed a picture of Lonnie on the dinner table.

Share on FacebookRest in peace, Lonnie. I guess Heaven needed another angel. Much hope and strength to Wanda, Jamal, family, and friends.
i’ve never thought about it that way, the angel thing. thank you for helping me when a loved one passes!
Load More Replies...I kind of fell in love with the whole bunch of them after first seeing this story. I know I wasn't the only one to feel this way. I've loved the yearly updates and was so sad to hear about Lonnie passing away but I'm glad Wanda and Jamal were able to still come together as the extended family they have become. We need more good, open hearted people embracing love like this!
Their story has become a Thanksgiving tradition. People all over the world look forward to seeing new pictures and interviews from the family.
Load More Replies...It really isn’t fair how good people have to go while awful people get to stay. These are the kind of people we need more of. And these are losses that never even had to happen. Unimaginable for Miss Wanda and the whole family, sad for Twitter and the internet community as a whole. They are the unofficial First Family of Twitter, and an ideal of what we should all want to be like as Americans. The face of real America is naturally going to include victims of Covid-19.
This is what happens when you stop judging and start seeing what we have in common. The world is full potential friends, but can we accept that we are equals? Can we stop defining people by stereotypes? There is beauty in everyone, this is what happens when you can open your heart to another. Wanda and Lonnie are examples of the type of person each of us can be. As their story continues to be told, the likelihood others will follow their example increases. I am thankful for people who demonstrate ways of living and thinking to help us learn to be happy. Thank you.
This is a more comprehensive article. I am happy they still celebrated Thanksgiving in his absence, as incredibly hard that it must have been- they are family. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2020/11/22/us/teen-grandma-thanksgiving-text-coronavirus-husband-trnd/index.html
There are almost one and a half million Covid19 deaths around the globe. One and a half million similar stories of lost loved ones, and still people run around claiming it's just a flu.
I loved reading the original story of how an accidental text created a beautiful bond between strangers who are now family. So sorry for your loss Wanda & family. My prayers and positive energy are with you all ♡
I remember you all from the 2016 post. Hugs and my sympathies to all who know Lonnie personally. May he rest in peace.
