Countries might be loosening lockdown restrictions, but the coronavirus hasn’t gone away. There are a total of 10.3 million confirmed cases of infected worldwide and 2.59 million of these are in the United States alone, according to Johns Hopkins University. Brazil stands in second place with over 1.37 million cases while Russia has 640k confirmed infections. Meanwhile, India has nearly 567k cases, and the United Kingdom has 313k.

A lot of people are asking the question: why is America number 1 in the world when it comes to Covid-19 infections? It’s a complicated issue with no easy answers. However, some people on the internet are posting anecdotal evidence about how "bad" some Americans are with following coronavirus guidelines. Scroll down to have a look, dear Pandas, and upvote your faves. Oh, and keep in mind that different sources provide slightly different numbers of people who have been infected with the virus.

You can see up-to-date details about the coronavirus pandemic by visiting the Johns Hopkins University Covid-19 dashboard right here. It’s a great tool to use for more in-depth understanding and wider context on this health crisis.

Just watched a 24 part lecture series from 2016 about the Bubonic Plague. Very informative. The initial plague that killed nearly half the population of Europe in the 1300s lasted about 5 years... then it came back about every 10 to 20 years for about 300 years. Didn't kill as nearly many in subsequent events but killed enough that it took those 3 centuries for the population to return to pre-plague levels. Still shows up today. There were outbreaks in India and Madagascar during the last 20 years, and about a handful of cases show up in the American southwest every year. Treatable if caught early, but symptoms are similar to flu and most doctors aren't familiar with it.

It disappeared because half London caught fire which killed the rats carrying the infected fleas..... Meanwhile, the Jewish population was spared from the plague because of their health/cleanliness laws - which is why the people assumed they caused it by poisoning wells and killed them for it....

Why would the bubonic plague disappear when London caught fire? Maybe it stopped in London for a time, but everywhere else it just ran out of victims.

The strains today are much less deadly though. The strains of the past successfully made themselves go extinct by killing their victims too fast and too often.

Prior to the existence of vaccines which targeted specific viruses, Human beings never built immunity to the following: Measles Mumps Polio Tuberculosis Smallpox The Black Plague Scarlett Fever Nephritis Those are just off the top of my head. The Common Cold is part of the Covid strain of virii (sp?). I don't know of any people who are immune to the Common Cold. COVID-19 is not going away until a vaccine can be synthesized. These people who constantly harp about "Herd Immunity" and swear that some virologists have "already demonstrated" that if we just do nothing - no masks, no social distancing - that we'll all get COVID-19 and most of us will "be ok" are the same people who think COVID-19 was created specifically to make Donald Trump "look bad." Why do Americans buy in to b******t medical claims so easily? They don't believe doctors or scientists but will believe without question some Youtube video. I don't get it.

The Bubonic Plague killed entire towns until there was nobody left to bury the bodies. It killed so many in the Roman Empire and they were so weakened that they lost huge parts of their Empire and it was the beginning of the end for them. It changed Europe and began the Dark Ages.

Well, actually: the bubonic plague is still around, and there are epidemics, just not like there was in the 14th century. And there is a vaccine. This honestly is stupidity on a mind-boggling level, since it took me like two Google seconds to find facts to refute all of that.

The world population in the 1300s was an estimated 475 million and Bubonic Plague is estimated to have reduced it to 350–375 million. The deaths in Europe alone were 35–55 million.

The bubonic plague is caused by the bacteria Yersinia pestis. It can spread through contact with fleas and now they are thinking from human to human contact also. It is still around but is controlled by antibiotics. So it hasn't vanished. Wear a mask this virus is dangerous. I am a nurse.

The Black Death epidemic had run its course by the early 1350s, but the plague reappeared every few generations for centuries. Modern sanitation and public-health practices have greatly mitigated the impact of the disease but have not eliminated it. While antibiotics are available to treat the Black Death, according to The World Health Organization, there are still 1,000 to 3,000 cases of plague every year. This was from History.com

It never left. Globally between 2010 and 2015 there were 3248 documented cases, which resulted in 584 deaths. The countries with the greatest number of cases are the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Madagascar, and Peru. For over a decade since 2001, Zambia, India, Malawi, Algeria, China, Peru, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo had the most plague cases with over 1,100 cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo alone. From 1,000 to 2,000 cases are conservatively reported per year to the WHO. From 2012 to 2017, reflecting political unrest and poor hygienic conditions, Madagascar began to host regular epidemics.
