Dog Was Left Tied To A Fence All Alone For 5 Days Because His Owners Left Him When They Moved House

It’s sad to admit that humanity still has a ways to go when it comes to respecting animal rights. Having a pet is a huge responsibility, and so it’s appropriate that there are laws and rights that explain how pets ought to be treated and taken care of.

Well, despite laws, rights, and just general human morality, this one couple is now facing charges for tying their dog to a backyard fence and then leaving to live in their new home in another state.

Meet Carter, a.k.a. Jon Snow, who was recently rescued from being tied to a fence in his own home

Meet Carter, the lovable husky pupper who looked like he had a forever home with 27-year-old Curtis Swan and 29-year-old Aaleyah Clay in Roselle, New Jersey.

Well, on December 4th, a wildlife sanctuary called the Popcorn Park Animal Refuge and shared some very sad news that Carter was brought into their Associated Humane Societies Newark facility with a severe neck wound.

Turns out, his owners decided to move houses. Well, more precisely, move entire states. And Carter was left behind. For five whole days, the pupper was completely neglected until an animal control officer was dispatched to investigate for a possibly abandoned dog in need of medical attention.

Turns out, Carter’s owners moved states and left him behind, promising they’ll come back

During this visit, the officer found that Carter, a young male husky, had a severe, infected open wound encircling a large portion of his neck, a product of being tied to the backyard fence; the officer then reported the matter to the Roselle Police Department.

An investigation was soon launched and led by Roselle Detective Ivan Romero. This is when they found out that the two owners had moved to their new home in Georgia five days before this. They apparently told the neighbor that they would eventually return for the dog, but a date was not specified.

Unfortunately, they never mentioned when they are coming back and when animal control came 5 days later, Carter already had a serious neck wound

According to the post, Carter, who was known as Jon Snow before the investigation, was taken to the Newark Branch of Associated Humane Societies of New Jersey where he underwent the medical treatment he desperately needed, and was later transferred to another shelter in South Jersey for further recovery.

The sanctuary also elaborated that Carter was getting daily laser therapy treatments on his neck wound and that he was also on medications for pain and infection. He is recovering nicely and is an amazing dog.

The pupper was admitted to the Newark Branch of Associated Humane Societies of New Jersey where he the treatment he needed for the wounds

The neglect that Carter was subject to during these five days also called for criminal charges to be brought against Swan and Clay. An investigation is still underway and no specifics can be disclosed due to the fact that it’s an ongoing investigation, but the two face convictions of third-degree crimes against Carter that could lead to up to a 5-year sentence in state prison.

Animal Petitions featured this story in one of their petitions, in which they also explained that Carter will not be available for adoption until the case is settled, which is standard procedure.

An animal abuse investigation is underway, and the owners might face up to 5 years in state prison for this

This is how I got my second cat. Tenants abandoned her at a property I managed, after they moved out. She sat all alone with no food, no water, and no way out. I love her and can’t imagine my life without her. Those people deserve to be hungry and hopeless, the same position they put my beloved kitty in. People, most of the time, are literally trash. Sounds fûcked up, but it’s sincere. So many people are complete garbage. It’s way too common. Just LOOK at the life, fun, and personality in that dog’s eyes. To let that animal, or any animal, suffer, makes them horrible fùcking people. If you don’t care about animals, the creatures we are literally here to protect, then you’re garbage. Animals are citizens of earth, not tools, not slaves, not food, not even “pets.” They’re companions. They’re residents of this planet.

Left the dog tied up alone for 5 days and can expect up to a 5-year sentence in state prison. One year in prison for every day the dog is left tied up seems only fair (even better would be ten years for every day but I'll take what I can get)

Make part of the sentence that they have to wear a padlocked collar around their necks that would also be chained to their bunk in the cell.

It's so terrifying to admit u are a pice of sh1t to go to a shelter, give it to a friend, a relative, a perfect stranger, look into their eyes and say you can't have a pet anymore? Oh yeah, it's easier to let them die. I hope you are proud of yourselves and rott in hell.

Left by the people who are supposed to take care of you. Tied to a fence, with the collar rubbing on your obviously already infected neck. Food and water running out. No shelter and it’s DECEMBER (glad it was before that blizzard). Noone even coming by to check on you. Bastards. That includes the neighbors too—-I would’ve stolen that dog from those assholes at the first sign of abuse, long ago. I’m over the moon that Carter is now in good loving hands, fed, warm, cuddled, and with competent vets and nurses to heal his physical wounds. You can see it on his face. In the top picture he’s just miserable. But then, after he’s off that rope, he’s just a beaming happy pupper! I hope the miserable f***s who did this to him go to jail, and end up with a lot of animal lovers as fellow prisoners. I want them to suffer, while Carter (or whatever his new name is) finds his forever home with people who will love and spoil him, and make this misery fade in his memory.

Im currently leaving with 600euros a month, this year my rescue rabbit needed 3 surgeries (teeth and abcesses) then she is fighting leaver problem and i paid more than 3000 euros for her jst this year. If she need more care this year i won't be able to do it, but i will leave her under the care of the vet for adoption, they know that i'm struggling, and that i'm a decent person. Pray for her (i'm not even religious) on the 30december (blood test at the vet), i'll do anything for her, I WONT LEAVE HER IN THE WILD! These people deserves to die with a lot of suffering! Why even own a pet if you're going to do this? :( Like, seriously... The dog(s) who live downstairs bother me enough as it is, though I feel like their case would be "mild" in terms of neglect (and thus nothing can be done about it). They keep a pitbull locked up in its crate ALL day. I walk by their sliding door and always see it there, and then I can hear it barking in the SAME spot everyday since I live above them. It has so much aggression issues because I KNOW it's not getting enough stimulation or exercise. Has lunged at my sheltie last week, but thankfully owner didn't lose control. Why even own a high maintenance dog if you can't take care of it? It's the LIFE of a creature for heaven's sake... And not only that, but your make your neighbor's life hell from their barking/aggression. UGH...

That is so wrong on so many levels. People like that do not deserve pets. Pets need responsible owners, people to love and care for them unconditionally. Maybe these humans should see how they feel after not eating or drinking for 5 days. Disgusting!!

If you love your pets, you find a way to have them taken care of whilst you are away. You can board them at the vet's or a pet day care, or drop them off at a willing friend's or neighbour's home, and pay them for doing you the favour. These cretins cheaped out and abandoned their dog. Poor Carter (Jon Snow) suffered needlessly. I'm very glad that he is doing better.

From a rescue to a home to a rescue. Maybe if the neighbours interfered too much then they would not have a case against the supposed people who abandoned him. He looked to have food so I presume the people who saw him made sure he was fed and watered. Afraid I could not have done it, I would have had to take him in, so beautiful, no badly treat through no fault of his.

My cat was abused by his previous owner who was an alcoholic and was on drugs he is now in prison for owning illegal drugs obviously my cat made a grand escape when he opened the door to go get the mail some girls found him in the woods with a stick in his front paw and a few scratches then since he had a chip and everything they traced him to his owner who upon giving the cat back hit him for running away obviously the shelter wouldn't give him the cat after witnessing this so they asked him if there was anyone who could take the cat and he gave it to my mom who knew I wanted an emotional support cat luckily you turn into your parents and not your uncles I do not feel bad that my uncle is in jail but I don't go around telling everyone like it's cool he got what he made mistakes and is paying for them and on behalf of my best friend he is in amazing shape but scared to be around you when you are carrying a big object I think possibly a fear of getting hit with it

Some idiot put a kitten inside the detached garage of a foreclosed house next door. When we discovered it, it was going to be 5F/-15C over night. The fools had locked the garage with the cat inside with a kitty litter box, no blanket, and water. No food. Kitten was maybe 2-3 months. My now-ex-husband spent HOURS on the phone getting ahold of someone who could give him the lock box number. They finally did and we got the kitten out. Neighbor adopted it. I just don't get it. They gave it water and a litter box, but then locked the door! If my husband hadn't been working from home that day, it probably would have just died.

All of the pets I ever had growing up but my first two, were "throwaways". My dad's family had an old wood framed house on the original property of the family farm that we used to spend summers at when I was a kid and up until I left home for college. People had a tendency to leave kittens and puppies in burlap sacks in the drive, especially if they saw a vehicle in the drive in front of the house. I lost count of the abandoned kittens and puppies we rehomed after getting them checked out by our vet.

I once adopted 2 cats that were left behind in an empty apartment. One of them had licked itself completely bald because of stress. Don't know how people can live with themselves after leaving an animal like this. It would haunt me in my dreams forever.

I think the neighbors who were told the dog was going to be left has fault in this too. How could they be ok with it? If a neighbor came to me, said they're moving and leaving their dog tied up in the backyard and will "come back for them", I would throw a f*****g fit. Then I'd take the dog myself.

An old movie quote that repeatedly gets proven as truth ! "Beware the beast Man, for he is the Devil's p**n. Alone among God's primates, he kills for sport, or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother's land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours. Shun him. Drive him back into his jungle liar, for he is the harbinger of death."

My dog, a husky, shepherd cross, was left tied up all day on a chain by people who crowed about being christians. She's wind her chain up so she couldn't get to her water dish. Whenever I went to check on my horse (temporarily living there after import) she'd be in a mess. I finally asked them if I could take her. She was the best dog for the next decade. And I miss her every day.

The way dogs and cats are treated is gutwretching. Sadly tho, where I live, if it were a cat and reported to the our county shelter/warden, it would likely still be there. Even tho dogs and cats have the same laws for owners, they never come out when cats are being mistreated, abandoned, sick, etc. They barely show up for dogs who have owners. Our neighbor had 6 dogs die outside from neglect and they just kept replacing them. They haven't done anything about it. His dogs were starving, a newfoundland mix and a saint bernard mix and you could really tell they were starving but nothing was done. They would tear the wood off the fence to escape to get some food and they were aggressive but the pound did nothing. They ended up dying about a month later.

I got one of my cats this way. Neighbors moved to FL & just left her in CT with a bowl of food & water (both empty for probably days) before we realized they left her. Luckily we took her in. Unfortunately, from being left outside essentially her whole 1st yr of life, she remained a mostly outdoor cat, much to my disagreement. We had her for almost 2yrs before she left us. We assume she was taken out by bigger, wilder animals (hence my wanting for her to stay indoors) since she just didnt come home one day. She ALWAYS came home to eat & sleep indoors with us. She was an awesome cat who i miss all the time. Im still in touch with my old neighbors & have told them if she EVER starts showing up again, im taking her home where she belongs!

That is so wrong on so many levels. People like that do not deserve pets. Pets need responsible owners, people to love and care for them unconditionally. Maybe these humans should see how they feel after not eating or drinking for 5 days. Disgusting!!

I doubt that the poor dog was tied for 5 days... I’m afraid it was even longer. 🥺

I don't and never will understand how someone could hurt/neglect such a loving animal.

Can't even read this because it makes me so sad and angry. People are horrible. WHY do people get animals as "pets" when they don't even care about them? My fir babies are family. They all deserve better.

Not saying they should have tied him up and left him, but to everybody who’s saying that fence could have kept a husky in the yard, just..... no. Have you seen them jump?

Huskies are known escape artists and roamers. DESPITE this you don't leave them tied up, or without food or water. That poor, beautiful pup. This sickens me. I hope they get a judge like Judge Judy, who adores dogs. Maximum sentence for animal cruelty!

First of all, all animal abuse and or neglect should be an automatic death sentence! I don't give a f**k if it's man, women, or a child! Animals are for life assholes! They are sentient beings. They are not stupid. They will love us unconditionally! I'm so f*****g sick and tired or useless fines a slap on the wrist for the useless kids, and jail time being given to these f***s who will only do it again and again! Start culling these f*****s! The human race sure a s**t won't miss them!

My cat found her forever home when someone moved and left her behind. Both my dogs are rescues from kill shelters. One of them looks just like Carter. Breaks my heart they treated him this way when there are people all over the country that would love him like he deserves!
