Trying To Lose Weight? This Comic Might Be Just What You Need
Our willpower is an exhaustible resource. Every now and then, we need to recharge and today we’ve got the perfect thing for you. After working in the corporate graphic design industry for 8 years, Gavin Aung Than quit his unfulfilling job at the end of 2011 to focus on his true passion, drawing cartoons. Since then, he has produced a lot of great strips, but one of them really stands out.
Titled “It couldn’t be done,” the piece was actually based on a poem by Edgar Albert Guest (1881-1959). “I love taking old poems and adapting them for modern readers, so I thought using fitness and running was a good idea,” he told Bored Panda. “Plus, the character in the comic was used in one of my earlier Zen Pencils comics where he first decided to lose weight. So I wanted to bring him back and continue his story.”
Some readers have even e-mailed Gavin, telling him they were motivated to get into shape after reading the comic. “I guess the combination of the poem and my pictures really packs a punch. That’s the power of comics!” he said. “The poem is pretty motivational but I thought that by adding a new original story I could make it the message even stronger and I think I achieved that. Well, I hope I did.”

I believe that's a quote from Mark Twain.....
Pretty inspirational. I love the illustrations that went along with it.
This is great! should be a children's book
It is a book, though not a children's one. It has famous quotes and illistrations like this one, very good book called "Zen Comics." Highly suggest you by it!
Children often do not see the excuses and 'problems' when they want to succeed at something. Often they just try or do it. Adults are the ones that need these stories.

The only people who need this kind of inspiration are dejected and depressed adults.
Not true at all! Everyone needs a little boost sometimes, and there's no shame in being depressed or dejected. It's something you have to overcome.
Telling depressed people to "deal with it" just expose a disturbing lack of empathy on your part.
Well, that was snotty.
of course I had to discover this AFTER I ordered a fucking massive pizza
I picked up Zen Pencils (by this artist) a couple of years ago and had to get the sequel this year. Highly recommended for the BP crowd if you liked the above. It really does develop short quotes into a relatable narrative in a way that turns them all the more inspiring. They are great for coffee table keepers or sharing with friends. I don't plug unless it's something I genuinely appreciate and think others would, as well. See more on their site: https://zenpencils.com/
That part where he drinks the smoothie cracked me up. But they can be made so they are not too disgusting you know? But overall nice one. I like how it is emphasized here how you have to shrug off all the mocking and stupid remarks and focus on the target, that is so true.
You're so right about the smoothie part. I know the way to make my broccoli + celery juice tasty for my husband and me, while keeping it all healthy. ♥
I usually add a small bit of some tasty fruit like apple or a banana and then whole thing tastes much better.
Yep! That's exactly what I do too, Petra. Also, if you have a sweet tooth, you might add a bit of honey (which is expensive, I know, but affordable).
What kind of stud has 4 boxes of Krispy Kreme donuts on hand any given day? This guy was my hero before he even whipped himself into shape
This comic is amazing and inspirational. Now, looking forward to another one where the protagonist doesn't fit within the "eating lots of junk" cliché, has a 9-hour working day and commutes 1+1 hour back and forth every day.
Downvoted already? The stigma is real. ♥
Why don't people act like this on the whole Jennifer Lopez thing, like of course you can get a body like if you had dedication its not just all about the money....
Jennifer is almost 50. I'll eat my hat if she hasn't had some lipo or butt lift or some surgical assistance to erase the loss of muscle and metabolism that hits at middle age.
While I do believe she obviously had something done Im just saying, that, not all of it is from surgery she obviously works out to get her body
thats me....every year...
How did you know I needed this?
"the eye of the tiger" i better download this song lol
You don't have to win, you just have to finish.
Thanks for sharing this great information. I really appreciate your work in this and looking for more good posts in the future. Thank you http://www.packersandmoversmadhapur.in
Love it so much!
It is of my life, the same experience, but it's different that after this , i was sent to the hospital.
Oh God this post just made me want to cry. "Inspiring"
I don't know why but this made me cry lol. I just started a new branch of life myself and feel just like this dude! Thanks to the artist :)
its one of the worst things you can do: switch from a fat macdonald customer to a marathoner wanna-bee. You need to take it slowly, or you can hurt yourself badly
This is really nice. It reminds me of how I started training for survival runs three years ago. In the beginning I was unable to run even 2 km in one go. This weekend I ran a military obstacle course of 15 km with 50 obstacles, including swimming in water that was 5 or 7 °C. I'm anemic and have always preformed poorly at sports, but turns out I just needed to learn to run at my own pace. Even if it's slower that almost everyone else, trying and getting to the finish is much more important than actually winning.
Nice story and good illustration
Woahh!! Amazing😀 Did anyone else here sing that song 'ROAR'(katy perry) reading that line " Eye of the tiger " in the comic? Or is it just me?
Hm.. I was singing that song "Eye of the tiger" reading that line.. ;)
THANX!!!
well done!
... And then you'll do it again!
He did it!!
It's from a series called Zen Comics, and the author would choose a famous quote and make a comic about it. I'm a fan!
I love it!!
This Is My inspiration for the rest of the week!
Be careful if you have ANY health issues, especially chronic or serious. Working out is not for everyone. I learned it the hard way. It always seems so easy when other people do this.
Was that meant to rhyme? I'm very confused by the writing style said "did it" like 18 times

Sorry to all those people that didn't finish the marathon.........you're good too........I guess.
Thank you! I will never finish a marathon, and I will never try. Got so many more important (to me) things to do. But to those who do it: "Whoa dude..."!

I kept waiting for an evil twist. It's literally "you can do it" but stretched needlessly with mediocre drawings.
I don't know why, but I thought he had a heart attack right at the finish line.
