Even after all these long months of living in a global pandemic, there are still way too many people out there refusing to wear face masks. Even scientific facts and various study findings proving face coverings to be a powerful weapon in fighting COVID-19 don’t seem to be convincing enough. But it’s better to see something once than to hear about it a thousand times, right?

Recently, the YouTube channel The Slow Mo Guys posted a slow-motion video in which a guy named Gavin Free illustrated how well face coverings work in slowing the spread of various diseases. In addition, he even got Dr. Anthony Fauci to comment on his little slow-mo experiment.

“We’re quite visual, us humans, I feel like, and when dealing with an invisible virus, it’s often hard to get your head around all the mechanics of how everything works,” Gavin Free explains in the video. “So I’m going to be using two methods today to help visualize the situation. One, slow-motion footage; two, I’m going to make it look really gross.”

The footage was filmed in ultra backlit slow motion to make the particles leaking out of his moth even more apparent

Gavin Free decided to film the footage not only in slow motion, but also using backlighting to make all of those nasty aerosolized particles leaving his mouth even more visible. The guy captured himself sneezing, coughing, and counting from one to four with and without a mask so he could later compare the footage.

Then the YouTuber showed all his footage to Dr. Anthony Fauci and asked for his opinion on all of it

“I think what you’ve just shown is a graphically beautiful demonstration of the importance of wearing masks and face coverings,” says guest Dr. Anthony Fauci as they watch the footage back together. “Because, as the film shows now, you’re saying the same thing, one, two, three four, and very little is coming out from the mask.”

“We know now that about 40-45 percent of the people who are infected don’t have any symptoms, and yet they have virus in their nasopharynx. And we know that a substantial proportion of infections are transmitted from someone who doesn’t have any symptoms,” Fauci explains in the video.

“People have an incorrect interpretation that the only time you transmit infection is when you’re coughing or sneezing all over someone”

“So people have an understandable but incorrect interpretation that the only time you transmit infection is when you’re coughing or sneezing all over someone. What they don’t appreciate is that if you are speaking, even if you don’t speak loudly—and if you are singing, which is even worse than just speaking—you have these particles that come out that can stay in the air for a period of time,” the doctor adds.
