While you’re quarantined and working from home, your community still needs some help. Bored Panda contacted Marlena Hartz, the director of communications at the nonprofit organization GlobalGiving. She told us that, fortunately, people are happy helping others during the crisis. “Our data shows that giving continues to be strong right now, and people are responding generously to help those in need.” GlobalGiving runs a Coronavirus Relief Fund that has already raised more than $1 million.

But Marlena warns that “many nonprofits in our communities are struggling to survive in the time of the coronavirus, with lost revenue from fundraising events, sudden technology needs, and an increase in demand for help from people who need food, access to health care, and more.” Thus it’s very important to raise your voice for those in need on social media. If you have the means, consider making a donation to the nonprofit of your choice.

Marlena finds it inspiring to see an outpouring of support on social media for stopping Covid-19. “People are so creative. From this hand-washing parody to celebrity giving challenges, we're continually surprised and overjoyed by the ingenuity and kindness of these good people in the midst of this global crisis.”

And some people are making heartwarming donations without having much themselves. Marlena recounted the moment when Jacqueline, a nonprofit founder herself, made a generous gift to Coronavirus Relief Fund. “She said she does not ‘know what tomorrow holds’ for her nonprofit, but 'she told us that she gives not because she has much, but because she understands what it means to have nothing.'”

Another way to help is supporting your local businesses. Find out if you are able to make a purchase online, which is a caring gesture amid these trying times. Many bars and restaurants have also been forced to shut down for quarantine. Consider buying gift cards for your friends and family.

San Antonio restaurant owner Steve McHugh explained that “gift cards are like interest-free loans.” The income from gift card purchases is seed money for many eateries that may help get them up and running after the crisis is over.

In the end, it all comes down to simple things—sharing food and other supplies with your neighbors or checking on how everyone is doing with a quick call. There is so much we could all do without setting foot outside our homes.

I was driving out from Costco and I saw the homeless man who stands on the corner there asking for work to earn money. I rolled down my window and I told him to come over. He came up, I reached in my pocket and handed him a $50 bill. He started saying "thank you" but gasped halfway through. He said "Are you sure?!" I said "Absolutely...you need to take care of yourself too." Through a shaky voice he said "Bless you ma'am!" I said "You stay safe" and I pulled up to the stoplight and looked in the side mirror as he returned to his corner. He then folded his sign and turned away from the line of cars behind me and I could see he was crying. Remember that there are people out there with no place to go and no resources. Help where you can!

Whilst I agree with you, Wonky eye Bezos doesn't care. All he cares about is how to maintain his 'richest man in the world status'. To him, employees are expendable. Bezos may have loads of money, but he has negative empathy.

I'm just amazed that a CEO of a chain of restaurants, this large, only has a 6 figure salary. Even if it's in the high 6 figures, which I'm sure it is, that's surprising and the way wealthy people should behave. My husband works for a large hospital chain, the CEO gave himself a "raise" of 6 million last year. And the doctors, nurses, EVS personnel aren't getting so much as an extra dime to keep going into this warzone. Thank you Advocate Aurora.

I know where I'm looking for my next job. Dining rooms in Nashville were shut down on the 20th, Friday. By the next Tues, just 5 days, the CFRA franchise that owns most of the IHOPS in middle Tennessee sold them all back to the parent company, who then shut down all of the stores permanently, except for one. So, now, not only are we out of work, but we have no job to return to,in what is going to be a very difficult time to find a new one

I feel you. I work (well, worked) in hospitality too. The company I worked for cancelled my last shift, then closed their doors 2 days before the government told them they had to. In Australia, if a company had to close because of this situation, they can register with the tax office and the employees can receive 6 months of $1500 every 2 weeks...my employer chose not to register as there is nothing in it for them, only the staff.

My neighbor tends bar at TR. She started as an expediter and rose through the ranks. She's always been out and when her manager found out she was engaged, he said, "I got the okay to comp some dinners for your reception, but however many people you have, I will cover the rest personally. This is an incredible example of an individual who has their priorities straight. Minimum-wage and lower income workers are often one missed paycheque away from eviction or starvation. Those earning a six-figure salary are not. What a wonderful example this individual has set for the upper class everywhere. If only there were more people like this out there.

Now THIS is how you do it. You know this guy has more than enough already—-not because he’s some kind of business genius, but because of the hard work and dedication of his employees—-and that he damn well knows it too. That kind of self-awareness (as opposed to the self-delusion that most CEOs, especially if they end up becoming president through the hacking efforts of an enemy, suffer from...) restores some semblance of humanity to business. In other words, it is possible to enjoy many of the fruits of capitalism yet still retain your empathy, compassion, kind-heartedness, and generosity, instead of becoming the kind of greedy, heartless, hedonistic douchebag that predatory capitalists tend to be.

A lot of us don't realize how important internet access is. The other day, bad storms blew through my town and knocked out not only my power but also my Internet service. Power was restored in a few hours, but I had to summon a technician to restore my Internet connection. Normally, I would go to the nearby library - walking distance, yay - and use their service; but thanks to COVID-19 they were closed so I had to mooch off a nearby McDonald's. I did buy some coffee there, though.

I bought a bunch of masks and then discovered I had leftover from when I was caring for my mother in law. So I donated what I bought to the local EMT's. They said they had enough..but then said that the Sheriff's department had been running low on gloves and masks. Don't forget about first responders. Crimes still happen during a lockdown and they have no choice but to run into the fire sometimes.

The picture was posted by our mayor to thank people for working with the city to contain the virus. We are actually doing good, people follow the rules a lot, not many are sick and people who lost their jobs or need help are being taken care of.
