The coronavirus pandemic is far from over, but some Americans are already demanding that the country be “reopened” so that everyone can get on with their lives. However, there are plenty of people out there who think it’s too soon to reopen and they’re making jokes online and poking fun at this idea and the protesters who support it.

The truth is, whether or not the US should reopen is a very complicated issue. On the one hand, reopening too soon or too recklessly can create a second wave of the coronavirus, leading to countless deaths. On the other hand, millions of Americans are suffering from the effects of the lockdown and the number of unemployed grows each day. Bored Panda reached out to financial expert Sam Dogen, creator of the Financial Samurai website, to hear his opinion about the current economic situation in America and what we can expect in the months to come. Politics aside, the US is dealing with not just a public health crisis but also with an economic one: more than 26.4 million Americans have filed jobless claims since the middle of March. That’s 15 percent of the workforce!
"If we estimate an average of 3 million Americans file for unemployment a week for the duration of the lockdown, if the lockdown lasts until July 3, we will have close to 60 million Americans unemployed by then. 60 million would be roughly a 38% unemployment rate as there were about 160 million working Americans before the pandemic began. Luckily, all states provide very generous unemployment benefits now, with some unemployment benefits exceeding 5,000 dollars a month per person!" Sam explained what we could expect if the lockdown continues for several more months.
"We currently face a difficult balance between saving the economy or saving our lives. It's survival of the richest as the politicians who decide our fate all still get paid during the crisis. Many are also very wealthy," Sam said. "If a total lockdown lasts past June 15, I think the S&P 500 hits all-time lows and it will take years to recover, not months."
He continued: "If the lockdown starts easing before June 15, with parts of the economy opening up due to better testing and a significant flattening of the curve, I think the economy and the stock market can recover 70%-80% of its losses within six months. I'm personally betting on a gradual opening up of the economy before June 15 and am looking for any real estate bargains to be had before then."

Economists are warning that the world is facing the biggest economic slowdown since the Great Depression and the International Monetary Fund expects the US economy to contract nearly 6 percent this year. While the Pew Research Center estimates that coronavirus-related job losses and pay cuts have hit roughly 43 percent of American households.
The government sent out 1,200 dollar stimulus checks to citizens as part of a 2 trillion dollar relief plan. But some Americans believe this is a stop-gap measure that will only temporarily keep people afloat.
If I had the resources I'd print a bunch of these and hand them out at an anti-quarantine protest.
Meanwhile, some people participated in protests around the country and demanded that politicians reopen the economy. President Donald Trump showed his support for these protesters, but other politicians are divided about what to do. Some have signaled their support for the President and the protesters; others warn that it’s too soon to reopen. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo recently announced that his state would extend the quarantine until May 15.
"We still have to make sure we keep that beast under control as we all get very eager to get on with life and move on. This is only halftime in this entire situation," Cuomo said.
As if the nurses don't have enough to keep them stressed and busy, now they have to 'babysit' a bunch of morons. America, you really are a special country 🙄

This is not a peaceful protest and therefore not protected by our rights they should be arrested and fined a ridiculously high amount.
Well technically it was blocking them from protesting rather than keeping them away from their hospital.
Even more technically, it was to keep the path to the hospital clear for ambulances, so they didn't want the protesters getting any closer to the hospital.

The day before and earlier on the day these pictures were taken, "protester" vehicles tried to block entrances to hospitals. One of the ER nurses knew someone at the nearby fire department and asked them to clear the fire lanes near the hospital. They brought in a large fire vehicle and blasted their horn behind "protesters" who promptly got the f*ck out of the way before they were pushed away.
WHY would they block the entrance to a hospital??? They should be ashamed of themselves. And put in prison. No, wait... they should be made to work cleaning the hospital and carrying out the dead. >:-(

Greek here. The first outbreak in the country appeared on March 1st. Our schools closed on March 10 and our lockdown for the general public started on March 14. Until today we have approximately 2500 people that are affected by the virus and only 128 deaths. I am very grateful for the immediate actions that were taken by the government and I'm ver proud of the people for obeying those measures. We will gradually return to normal, starting May 4th and I'm pretty sure we will be OK ☺️
American here. I honestly don't know if this country understands what "normal" means. Even before the pandemic we had a lot of abnormal, mostly in our government.

They do not ever consider that the consequence may cost more lives than the virus. They also assume that a lockdown will reduce the number of cases, though it may only lengthen the time for infections while the total number remains almost the same. They believe that an ICU is the definitive answer regarding treatment, even though we seem to be told that there is no treatment and ICU is fairly ineffectual; the corollary being that we may be as well treating at home with oxygen when needed. Worst of all, though, is this scathing accusation that people who disagree with a lockdown don't care about life, or their loved ones. Wrong, wrong, WRONG!!! I disagree with the lockdown (although I adhere), likely am in more peril than most, and would hurt just as much as anyone. Do not suggest that my sorrow would be any less than yours!
Flattening the curve hopefully will mean that there are enough ventilators *and* staff so that people who need them can get them. Trying to spread the outbreak out over time rather than have a massive wave. It is a new virus, meaning we all are learning about it still. Young people do die from it. Children have died from it. And the NY population is younger than say, Italy, so in proportion there will be more young people dieing in N.Y "Only" about 20% of sick people are so sick they need ICU to stay alive.
