Bored Panda contacted Ariane Ling, a clinical instructor in the the Department of Psychiatry at NYU Langone Health, who told us about the toll the current crisis has on our emotional state. It turns out that harnessing a sense of humor during this time is one of the most effective strategies to cope with unpleasant feelings.
Ling explained that there are both short-term and long-term benefits of cracking a joke now and then amid the crisis. “It helps to manage and tolerate stress in the moment while also maintaining perspective and resilience moving forward.” Humor is one creative way of coping rather than avoiding and going into denial about things.

no, teachers should be paid more than either. The doctors and nurses are doing their job as normal, while the teachers have to adapt to EVERYTHING.

Oh I heard something on the radio I think it was about them asking Premier League footballers to take less pay to help out. I thought, wow are they going to be helping out the NHS or something - no! It's to pay the wages of the staff at the football grounds so that they still get their full wages, I assume instead of just the 80% that the government are going to pay! Please correct me if I'm wrong with that
As a nurse of 40 years I agree. No one tells you that you will be treated as the scum of the earth as a nurse. I have be hit,punched,kicked,pushed, spit on,pee and s**t on,had my life verbally threaten( had to have police protection) called every name in the book and then some. Exposed to every germ. And I must be professional. Everyday is a battle to stay alive . Nurses should be paid for their knowledge and hazard pay.
No need. Teachers should too. Now, that said, footballers should get lifetime health care, so should veterans. well, hell, everyone should. Health care should not be one of those things held over the heads of people. That's sadistic.
In most countries footballers do get lifetime health care, like we all do. There is only one country where health care is an extremely expensive commodity.

I absolutely agree. Hard work should pay off. But there is a reason why footballers earn so much. Millions of people are watching them. I don't understand why, but they do, and so it is absurd amounts of money in it.
People have always watched football though and they never used to be paid such crazy money. Time it was hauled back or at least frozen.

In times like this many people get their eyes opened for HOW much the nurses should have a raise. With risk of getting infected, they stand there every morning to help.
Exactly! Nurses can help keep the footballers healthy, yet footballers get paid far more just for kicking a ball around. Nurses keep the country running!
Nurses should definitely earn more, but successful football players can earn millions of dollars. Unfortunately I don’t think hospitals could stay open if nurses were paid that much!

I accept that there is also the theory that if you pay nurses a footballers wage you will get some very uncaring people in the profession because they'll be there for the money. There is a balance - we're nowhere near it. Footballers never used to be paid such ridiculous sums and the beautiful game was still popular and successful. It's out of control. Not just footballers either.

As a result, some “of my patients have described [the situation] as surreal or floating without an anchor.”
According to Ling, psychological wellbeing can also go in a positive direction where it is possible to keep spirits high when faced with large-scale tragedy. She explained: “Despite physical distancing, it's evident that people have been taking advantage of technology to stay social and connected. I’ve learned from my patients that holding on to gratitude is also critical in bolstering resilience.” It all comes down to being thankful for small things and enjoying the moment.
The clinical instructor also told us that in their NYU Langone Health clinic, “we started a 'good vibes' email chain where we share uplifting stories and clever memes.” So next time you’re thinking of sharing that meme with your friends and relatives, just press send—it may be all they need now.
