I cannot understand why so many people in the world listen more to a populist politician on health issues than to researchers? I go to the doctor with my complaints and not to the mayor.

I'm so jealous of those countries that made the right decisions. I live in the U.S and it's a joke. People think they know better than scientists and health experts. Common sense is no longer common here.

What should I say about that. What should I say about a country who votes for trump. And Bush.. Bush not even once . And Reagan. What should I say about a country where people are winning with the argument freedom. What should I say about a country where people win cases at court because in the instructions manual is not explicitly written to not put a cat in the microwave. Where you want to defund the police. Where students are broke after finishing University. Where you are broke when you have a major sickness and you need to go to hospital.. And and and... Sorry mate. But USA... Is degenerating.

As a Kiwi, it’s strange and sad to see how that’s phrased like it’s a novel thing. Of course politicians have to get recommendations from health experts before they do all the policy stuff - how can they make the right policies if they don’t know how the rona works? PS: The entry in here about “take your bourgeoisie a*s home and learn to cook” was an official policy for the strictest part of our lockdown. Takeaways were allowed once we switched to a less strict lockdown and sit-down restaurants were only allowed when we had 0-3 cases per day (equivalent to 0-200 cases per day in the US).

Agree that NZ have done a great job but It’s also good to keep in mind that the population of NZ is 5 million.. Melbourne in Australia is 5 million... Australia’s population is 25 million which is close to the population of Bombay. It is far easier to help prevent the spread of Covid in NZ as it is in most other countries. Still, they’ve done a good job for sure.

I suspect it's more to do with New Zealand having a population about the size of Ireland and an area about the size of the UK.

True, but the population still has to do as they're told. New Zealand went into lockdown very early (a couple of weeks after covid arrived in the country) and stayed that way for 4 weeks before easing restrictions over the course of about a month. The result was in a country of 5 million people there have been "only" 22 deaths to date (all of which were people from rest homes or otherwise health impaired) and as of today "only" 1,548 cases total. There are still cases but they're all NZ'ers returning home from overseas so the government is still expecting another wave but intends to lockdown again if it happens.

This is not entirely true. They have had 1,548 confirmed cases and 22 confirmed deaths of Covid-19. Significantly lower than most countries. But not all that surprising considering that they are an isolated country (island) and a relatively small population (

There are 26 US states with smaller population than New Zealand, and 11 US states that have lower population density than New Zealand. COVID-19 cases are rising on many of those states.

Actually our govt supported businesses and people throughout the lockdown and our economy has reopened with no current need for extreme protective measures that hinder trade. We have imported and exported safely throughout the pandemic and domestic tourism is rising ^-^

Confirmed 1,549 Recovered 1,506 Deaths 22. Its been 77 days since last local infection (all current cases are returning citizens who are put into an immediate 14 day quarantine upon arrival). I'd say out of 5 million ppl that's not really "a lot of infected".

The sad part in all of this is that many of the cases are counted as 6-10 cases. If a person tests positive one day and is still testing positive three days later, they count it as two. I know someone that tested positive 6 times and they counted it as six cases! The numbers are way off. Idiots!

You can only die once, so the rise in COVID-19 deaths is obviously NOT caused by increased testing. If anything, deaths are under-counted, because many states only count deaths that are confirmed to be caused by COVID-19.

NZ had 0 cases for several weeks, now the only cases are those contained from returning NZ'ers at the border in government managed quarantine. We've had NO community transmitted cases in over 75 days.

The first thing that we wanted to know was which meme about 2020 stood out for Know Your Meme’s Senior Editor Matt personally as the most accurate and funniest so far.

“This is a tough question. The first one to come to mind is ‘Tested Positive for Missing the Homies,’ which is something that I think had very wide appeal during the coronavirus quarantine. I have to admit, I am also suffering from this affliction. What can I say? I miss my homies. I think about that meme a lot,” Matt told Bored Panda.

However, the topic of humor during a deadly pandemic can be touchy. On the one hand, humor and laughter always go hand in hand and help people keep their hope burning strong during times of crisis. On the other hand, the Covid-19 pandemic has affected a lot of people who might not think that the coronavirus is something to take lightly.

“I think I need to take this on a case-by-case basis,” Matt explained. “There are plenty of great coronavirus memes and plenty of bad ones. I think when it comes to a situation like that, one that affects everyone on a global scale, it's kind of fair game. Of course, there's a line, I think, when you start mocking other people's experiences with the virus.”

He added that nearly anything can be funny but the context surrounding a joke makes all the difference. We were also interested to know if Matt thought there was any way that the different sides of the aisle could find common ground.

“There's not any reconciling this point. People will always offend and others will always be offended. I think that most people should just be conscious about what they're meme-ing and what the subtext of the meme is. If people do take offense, try and understand why. It's possible to make jokes about sensitive topics, but you have to listen to your audience in order to get there.”

Finally, we wanted to get Matt’s take about the second half of 2020 and whether he thought the global situation would improve. Unfortunately, he wasn’t too optimistic. “Sorry to say, it's not looking good. We're currently in the middle of a global pandemic that's killed more than 400,000 people, so I think for many people it's probably going to continue being pretty painful.”

He added: “Oh, and there's a US election coming up, which are usually calm, orderly events with no problems, partisanship, or societal ruptures. Sorry to be a bummer!”
