I cannot understand why so many people in the world listen more to a populist politician on health issues than to researchers? I go to the doctor with my complaints and not to the mayor.

The first thing that we wanted to know was which meme about 2020 stood out for Know Your Meme’s Senior Editor Matt personally as the most accurate and funniest so far.

“This is a tough question. The first one to come to mind is ‘Tested Positive for Missing the Homies,’ which is something that I think had very wide appeal during the coronavirus quarantine. I have to admit, I am also suffering from this affliction. What can I say? I miss my homies. I think about that meme a lot,” Matt told Bored Panda.

However, the topic of humor during a deadly pandemic can be touchy. On the one hand, humor and laughter always go hand in hand and help people keep their hope burning strong during times of crisis. On the other hand, the Covid-19 pandemic has affected a lot of people who might not think that the coronavirus is something to take lightly.

“I think I need to take this on a case-by-case basis,” Matt explained. “There are plenty of great coronavirus memes and plenty of bad ones. I think when it comes to a situation like that, one that affects everyone on a global scale, it's kind of fair game. Of course, there's a line, I think, when you start mocking other people's experiences with the virus.”

He added that nearly anything can be funny but the context surrounding a joke makes all the difference. We were also interested to know if Matt thought there was any way that the different sides of the aisle could find common ground.

“There's not any reconciling this point. People will always offend and others will always be offended. I think that most people should just be conscious about what they're meme-ing and what the subtext of the meme is. If people do take offense, try and understand why. It's possible to make jokes about sensitive topics, but you have to listen to your audience in order to get there.”

They're protecting themselves, whilst deciding to put children at risk. How does that make sense?

Simple...they care about themselves and don't care about the children. I'd be willing to bet that the people pushing to reopen the schools before it's completely safe don't have children that attend those schools.

I live near Chicago, and the parents just aren't having it. They want them back in school, and the virus be damned. I'm so glad I don't have school age children anymore. This will be a logistical nightmare.

I'm keeping my kids home even if it means I have to do the home school program online compared to their teachers controlling it. I'd rather have the teachers tell us what to do but I will switch to regular homeschooling if necessary.

Children are a commodity to them. Trump had nothing to do with raising any of his children. Baron has never been seen just hanging with his dad, unlike all the younger children of presidents for decades.

Ok people let’s get this straight stop saying kids when they get the virus just have a simple cold and it’s no big deal. My friend Olivia got the virus and she is a kid like me and it didn’t do to much to harm her. Pretty harmless you say? It spreads you know to people who are more at risk such as the elderly, and sick people or people living in harsh conditions. It can spread to anybody and from there it keeps going. Please educate yourselves!

I am an eleven year old and I went to school for a few weeks and it was fine. Everyone wore masks, social distanced, and it was a really good time, because it is my last year at primary school, and I might never see these people again. I don't understand why people say children are irresponsible, because while I cannot do things like drive a car, I can do the things that I should be able to do, because I listen to people and work hard. which is more than some adults can say, because let's face it, Greta thunberg, a sixteen year old, made a bigger impact on the planet than the idiots who do it all for publicity. Who I might say are adults. This is a long comment eh.

if school districts would just put good damn restrictions in place, like A and B days, the option for virtual schooling, required masks, staying in one classroom, and plastic shields around every socially distanced desk, then i could maybe see some schools reopening. but right now schools don't see that there is a literal pandemic happening and it just blows my mind lmao.

Wat een onzin, een van de weinige zaken die echt duidelijk en bewezen zijn, is dat kinderen niet ziek worden en ook niet besmetten. Jammer dat zo weinig mensen de feiten kennen

They're wearing shields. Disinfecting daily and taking other precautions. U want kids to be home for the rest of their lives. Who's going to pay the moms who can't work anymore because they have to stay home to teach their kids everyday. Somebody better be paying. I'm not a teacher and they can't use zoom if children can't afford a tablet computer or phone. And the school or government doesn't have them or afford them. Are we in fantasy land. If ppl would have listened when we were in lockdown we probably wouldn't have the problem we have today. For the selfish ppl who refuse to wear a mask because it's their right. Sit tf down u aren't helping. Think of others. Stop being a righteous a*****e

Finally, we wanted to get Matt’s take about the second half of 2020 and whether he thought the global situation would improve. Unfortunately, he wasn’t too optimistic. “Sorry to say, it's not looking good. We're currently in the middle of a global pandemic that's killed more than 400,000 people, so I think for many people it's probably going to continue being pretty painful.”

He added: “Oh, and there's a US election coming up, which are usually calm, orderly events with no problems, partisanship, or societal ruptures. Sorry to be a bummer!”
