Nurse Opens Up About The Sacrifices She Has To Make For Helping Covid-19 Patients And Her Tearful Photo Goes Viral
With 1,275,542 confirmed cases globally, coronavirus pandemic is now a full-blown battlefield. While health workers are the soldiers on the front lines, many of them are exposed to contracting the disease on a daily basis. As a result, they have to make hard sacrifices that concern their lives and families.
An emergency room nurse named Devon Nicole Oechsle from Texas is no exception. The woman shared a post about arriving at a heartbreaking decision after talking to her husband Jason, who’s also a firefighter. Devon, full in tears, wrote that they decided to part with their 3.5-year-old child in an effort to avoid passing the Covid-19 on to her. Her post has since gone viral with 216K impressions, making her a hero both as a front-line nurse and as a mom. But she remained humble, “I don’t feel like my job is deserving accolades.”

With Covid-19 now paralyzing US hospitals, the staffing problems are becoming all the more real. The data from the outbreak in Wuhan, China shows that 15 percent of the 1,700 cases affecting medical personnel were critical, and five died. Meanwhile, 1 in 10 coronavirus cases in Italy were those of health care workers, as reported on March 22.
Labor unions are calling for a safety standard that would require health care employers to create an infection control plan. It would prevent medical staff from being exposed to deadly infections.
According to Public Integrity, the group of representatives sent a letter to OSHA demanding the action for the coronavirus. They stated: “If healthcare workers are quarantined in large numbers, or get ill or die, or fear coming to work due to the risks, it’s not just a workplace problem, it’s a national public health disaster.”
Meanwhile, California remains the only state with a standard to protect health care workers from infectious diseases.
People felt thankful beyond words
This woman and all the other people on the front line are making a huge sacrifice right now. The least the rest of us can do is stay home and take this illness seriously. Unless you have a legitimate reason to be out and about, please stay home so that we can get past this thing. Anyone who says that she shouldn't be upset or shouldn't be posting pictures like this don't understand the sacrifice that these people are making. They don't have the option to decide that they don't want to come into work or they don't have the option to work from home. Thank you all nurses, doctors, grocery store workers, pharmacists, and delivery drivers. Your service is appreciated.
Without the selfless acts and sacrifices that you and others have had to endure during this difficult time, we would be absolutely screwed. Thank you to everyone out their sacrificing themselves, their families etc to help us as a society.
I don't think I'll ever understand the malice of people. Did someone really react with a "getting rid of your kid" reply? What do such people think (with)?
I can be a bit of a d**k on here, it amuses me to wind people up. Immature, I know but I'm okay with that. HOWEVER, I could never be as big a d**k as the vile people who have said the vile things to this hero. She is out there at the frontline, SAVING LIVES. What are the keyboard warriors who are saying these things doing? Sat on their a**e abusing the woman that's saving lives. That makes me sick! Thankfully (due to respecting isolation) I haven't been infected but once this is over I plan to write open letters of thanks to all the essential workers who have put themselves at risk to keep us warm, fed & alive. Especially the health workers. From a minor troll (me) I say f**k those vile trolls that have hurt this hero for making the difficult & painful (but totally justified/sensible) decision to keep her child safe.

My personal feeling is this, everyone who is in the front lines, from grocery clerks, peace officers, paramedics, fire fighters, nurses, hospital personnel, doctors, etc...all deserve accolades. If I miss anyone else, I apologize. You are all awesome and I thank you from the very bottom of my heart. Stay strong America. Wash your hands!!
This nurse is totally correct. As much as she misses her child, and her child misses her? She's doing what's best. SHe's keep her child safe from anything *she* is exposed to, and is protecting her patients from outside contamination as well. I salute her.

My godfather is a nurse in the ER, haven't been able to contact him because he can only be at his job. Praying for all the people who haven't spent time with those they love because of this pandemic. :(

Just be truly thankful there are people like her out ther who are not as selfish and cold hearted as most of us are! (Not being much of an altruist myself, I really do appreciate people who are!)
Devon, you and Jason made a decision to keep your daughter safe. I can only imagine how heartbreaking it was to send her away and now to be away from her. I hope you and Jason stay healthy and safe. This reminds me of the people in English cities in WWII who sent their children away, for safely, because of the Luftwaffe's bombing.
That is such a huge sacrifice to make. These are heroes who are sacrificing big parts of their life, not to mention their own life, to help others. I am so, so grateful to every person from all the services out there who continue to work so hard during these hard times to help everyone else. Huge thanks to every one of them out there and I hope they know just how appreciated they are.

Wow. Such incredibly unkind posts to hers, I don't understand! She is a hero! God bless her and all the healthcare personnel who keep taking care of and cleaning up after all the sick. When you are looking for a hero, look to them! And all our emergency personnel on the streets, and ambulance and paramedics! Support them, don't tear them down. One day, you may need them... just pray they are still there when you do..

First. She did the right thing. Even though it broke her heart and her husband's heart, they sent their kid to safety. Historically, millions of parents have done this same thing. Remember ww2? Where parents had to send their children to actual strangers? Not family friends. Second. This couple is almost guaranteed to contract the virus at some point. And knowing the danger and NOT sending their angel to a safe place is not only negligent but endangerment. I firmly believe that people who willingly bring their kids into public should be investigated for endangerment. And if their kids get the virus they are charged with it, maybe even attempted murder. Like a person with HIV that doesn't disclose the fact to a sexual partner can be charged. And finally. If you haven't lived it stfu. You get no say in how people raise their kids at the best of times. The world is fighting a war, and everyone should do what is best to keep the people they love safe. Even if it hurts.
Single parents have no choice but to “willingly bring their kids into public” if the want to get groceries.

I'm sorry but I don't understand why some people feel the need to take a picture of themselves crying and then post it online alongside their tearful story, if not for some likes and upvotes. Especially now, many people go through the same s**t, some more than others, but (for me at least) a sad situation is very private and I wouldn't want to share with the internet. I mean, you're crying ffs, the last thing that should go through your mind is take a picture
I think it's good for us who are not as affected to realize how much others are and how much are others sacrificing for the greater good. If that includes a raw picture of the person crying - so be it.

There have been many children under the age of 10 years old sickened with this virus in and around KY. There have also been deaths of children in these areas. So I don't know what you mean by not very susceptible. They seem to be very affected from what I've seen. They are having so very much more than mild symptoms. So, as a parent, I would go to any length to protect my children, especially when they're younger as in the one being discussed here.

This will likely continue for many months. Lockdowns and distancing allows hospitals to not be completely overwhelmed, and leave the victims of Covid-19 drowning in their own lungs. How about you stop undramatizing this and take it seriously.
