We all know how beneficial laughter is to our bodies and states of mind. However, it’s not the only way to protect your mental health. Especially if you’re staying at home and distancing yourself socially.

Bored Panda reached out to Mind, a UK mental health charity, to learn more about staying mentally fit during the coronavirus lockdowns we’re seeing around the globe.

Stephen Buckley, the Head of Information at Mind, explained that media coverage may increase people’s concern about the coronavirus, therefore, you should think about “taking a break or limiting how much you read or watch is helpful to maintain your well-being during this time.”

Most of us are guilty of following every tiny update about the coronavirus pandemic. But it’s far from healthy. It leads to anxiety. It leads to low-key panic. It leaves us mentally and emotionally drained. Though it’s important to stay informed, try to limit the amount of time you spend reading the news, especially stories about the ‘Coronapocalypse.’ Also, try to stick to reputable news sources so you don’t get worried over misinformation.

Staying mentally fit also means reducing the amount of time you spend scrolling through social media. After all, nearly everyone’s writing and posting about the coronavirus at the moment. You deserve a break from all of that. The good news is that sites like Twitter offer you the ability to mute certain keywords, to follow or mute accounts that might be making you anxious. So use those tools to filter your social media feed and go for wholesome news stories.

According to Buckley, some people might find that staying at home alone might not be ideal. “So try to think of alternatives, for example staying with a friend or family member. You can also keep up to date with the current government health advice about whether you need to self-isolate.”

If you’re self-isolating, first of all, congratulations on making a smart decision. Well done. Unfortunately, quarantining yourself might be a bit, well, lonely. So keep connected to the people you care about by phoning, messaging, and emailing them regularly. We’re social animals, after all. Take away the social aspect and what are we left with?

Yep. Tech and video conferencing - who actually needs offices really? Very few jobs need to be held in buildings where you are all penned together these days.

I will use aloe Vera for burns and tea tree for spots and lavender to help me sleep. But I am also a huge fan of vaccines and antibiotics haha.

See, essential oils aren't all that bad- if you want a nice smell or something. In my opinion, some scents can put you in a bit of a better mood or help you sleep, but that's really all essential oils are gonna do. We have an essential oil diffuser in our house, but it's just to smell nice. It's this believing that essential oils are gonna ward off or cure illnesses that is the problem. Like people think a nice smell is gonna be better than all of modern medicine???

I mean, nobody should be using oils alone, but while the hospitals are overwhelmed, it's nice to get a tiny immune boost. While we're in quarantine, we can get mood and sleep help.

They're sold out of tea tree oil. I'm not an essential oil enthusiast, but tea tree oil does kill germs. But I use it in addition to alcohol, washing hands, etc.

Right!?! I love using rubbing alcohol with drops of tea tree as a disinfectant in a spray bottle! Only none at the store so my hubby bought me vodka instead...

Once I learned about Elderberry tea over 20 years ago, it helped lessen the intensity and duration of the flu the next two times it visited me. Natural remedies are not "cures". Shame on the people who promote them as such. ALL the health supporting activities - wholesome foods, clean water, sleep, exercise, positive relationships, reducing toxic chemistry in our cleaning and "beauty" products (essential oils do SO much to help us achieve this) - work together to allow our body to do what it's built to do!!

or vinegar or crystals I've noticed also... I think it's like in the horror movies, when there is a vampire they never go to a modern non-denominational church... the find a Real Catholic Church! especially a super old fashioned looking one where the Priest wears a cassock. That's how you know it's getting down to life or death! lol

Vinegar will kill some bacteria. Drinking vinegar water actually helped my ancestors keep from getting the cholera or whatever was killing people off right and left during the Runaway Scrape in Texas that happened because of the Texas war for independence from Mexico. (It's documented in my several-greats grandmother's memoirs.) It can be an effective disinfectant depending on what the microbe is. But it doesn't have much effect, if any, on COVID-19.

Thats cos people do believe (still!!) that something will wok unless it comes on a prescipition)!! BUT think about it, antibiotc - means against life - probiotic (which all EO's are) - means for or promoting life! I rest my case.

Essentiel oils can be effective and some are actually researched (many drugs we use come from plants, after all). They are just not effective enough when It comes to such serious disease.

Actually, that's not true. And just because you and others who doubt EO efficacy don't believe in it, doesn't make it untrue. Also, those who regularly use pure essential oils are likely the ones who are doing well, not panicking during this trying time. Grateful I have and use them every day.

And about wipes and commercial hand sanitizer, MOST people are unaware that, in order for them to be remotely effective, people need to wait between 20 - 30 seconds before the chemical has actually worked against the bacteria/germs. MOST people are "wipe and touch" so end up with said bacteria/germ on their hands anyway!!! Also, that toxic chemistry has to go somewhere - face, mouths, food, other people. Knowledge is power no matter what "camp" you are in. Choose your weapon and stand by it.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a big run on liquor. The last time I went to Aldi, they still had plenty of their funky off-brand beers.

I love how all those "EOs can cure cancer!" people aren't making the same claim about coronavirus. Also, this: "To make a homemade hand sanitizer, just add ten drops of Thieves to rubbing alcohol and aloe vera gel..." Yeah, guess which thing is killing the virus?

Finally, remember the basics. Eat well, drink plenty of water, exercise regularly. Read a good book, maybe practice meditating as well. If anything, this crisis is the perfect opportunity to reexamine your priorities (and maybe even start a new hobby!). Above all, remember to laugh and smile a lot. Having a good sense of humor is going to help immensely in the months to come.

“Our physical and mental health are linked, so make sure you are eating regularly and drinking enough water,” Buckley explained. “Think about getting food delivered or asking someone else to drop food off for you. Being at home might impact your routine which can affect your appetite and when you drink water. It can help to create a new routine to make sure you are looking after yourself.”

Buckley stressed the importance of staying active and keeping your mind stimulated. “Keep your brain occupied and challenged. Set aside time in your routine for this. Read books, magazines and articles. Listen to podcasts, watch films and do puzzles.”

Yep, sorry anti-vaxxers. Though to be honest I'd give you a pass and let you have the vaccine (if you wanted it) because it would help OTHERS be safe.
