Student Decides To Test If This Flatmate Is Really Copying All Her Looks, Fakes Shaving Her Head As A Trap, Drama Ensues
This story comes from a 19-year-old female student who met a girl named Kaya in her university halls. “We’re not best friends but we are friendly,” the author wrote in a post on AITA that went viral with 22.6k upvotes since it was published 4 days ago.
The tension between the girls started rising when the author noticed Kaya was copying her in everything. “It started slowly, accessories and some clothes. I didn’t even notice until people started pointing it out to me,” the author wrote. Then, it started going further until it reached the point “that whenever I had a male friend or guy I was interested in over, she would go out of her way to try and get their attention.”
Unsurprisingly, it started bugging the author. So over the Easter break, the author and her other friend decided to find out once and for all if Kaya is really copying everything she does. What followed was a test that ended in a bald head, accusations of lying, and a report filed to the university.
Recently a 19-year-old girl shared how a copycat friend from uni halls shaved her own head after the author ran a test to see if she was really copying everything she does

People showed their support for the author and said that it was essentially not her fault that the copycat girl shaved her own head
Probably another friend, someone she went to highschool with? Seems unlikely OP would be the first person she was copying.

Yes! Stephanie's Ponytail!! One of my faves and exactly what I thought of here! Robert Munsch is the best.

Apparently some people are saying they’re the AH because of the prank test she did to see if the copycat was copying them, but the copycat shaved their own damn hair, if they didn’t want to why the hell did they do it of their own free will?
Load More Replies...To a much lesser extent, I had a similar copycat. A woman I worked with started to copy the way I do my makeup, the way I wear my hair, my clothes, even my mannerisms. It started out slowly and kind of ramped up over time. Then since we both lived far from our office, she suggested we carpool. She picked me up most mornings, and we had to leave early... 5 am. She normally arrived a few minutes early and would sit in the living room and talk to me while I was getting ready for work. Then she started coming earlier and earlier...she'd get me out of bed at 4.30, then 4.25. I told her she'd have to wait outside after that... I needed to get ready for work in peace, and she could wait in the driveway until I came out. That worked for a while, until one morning I woke up to pee, and she was sitting in my driveway at 3 am. That was the final straw. I told her it was just not working for me, and said I would drive myself. After that, I noticed she was driving by my house.
Lesser extent?! Good gracious, I would be really scared!! 😳
Load More Replies...That copycat girl sounds like she has some serious mental issues. I wouldn't be surprised if this test caused the copycat to have a breakdown and do something much more drastic.
If ever I wanted to read an update on something, this is it. Where's the update?
Now I want to hear the copy cats side of the story. This is weird and confusing. Are we really to believe that the girl who complained to the school just got away with it? At the age of 19, are you not responsible for how you handle your own body and decisions?
The copycat may be dealing with mental health issues. Going away to school and being away from parents at the same time is a huge change - some adjust quickly, some don't and some have breakdowns. The university may be investigating to get the other side of the story before taking the next steps.
Load More Replies...I genuinely thought that people like this only existed in silly storybooks for children and weird dramas about disturbed adults. Copycatting as a surrogate for potentially more-triggering material whilst still getting the point across about toxic behaviour. To find out that extreme cases like this actually exist! Granted I should've known, if people will copy celebrities and movie roles then of course there are those who'll imprint their unhealthy obsession on a person they know, but still... it actually kinda stuns me and really boggles my mind. How can someone be *that* dependant on another for their personal style?
You don't think this is real, do you? This has been posted by a Bored Panda staff writer, taken from a Reddit post. There is zero evidence that anything like it ever happened, and plenty to suggest that the story's internal consistency is shaky. People want likes and upvotes. They write stories. This is one of those stories.
Load More Replies...I'm wondering what kind of messed up university she goes to. Why would they care what someone does or doesn't do to their hair? Why get themselves involved in such a trivial matter? These girls are both adults. Unless the copy-cat made up some serious stuff...
It might not have been punitive at all. Maybe the uni just wanted to see if the troubled one was really as nutsy as she seemed, maybe they were just looking for the OP side of the story.
Load More Replies...Nta, but why are so many of the reddit commenters telling her to specifically leave out the part where she was testing whether Kaya was copying her or not? Are they saying that's a genuine liability, as in "nta, but you knew what you were doing"?
First, the story is fiction, and second, the protagonist did know what she was doing. She posted a pretence of shaving her head to catch out the other girl. A prank played while she was drunk, but still a prank. It had unintended consequences (but not really - she really wanted the other girl to shave her head) but it is just a story, first on Reddit and now on Bored Panda.
Load More Replies...Will it also be a movie about this? Because I would really love to see it on the big screen...
This is kind of a textbook example of one version of borderline personality disorder. That said, there were better ways to handle it.
I was reading a post on Fb the other day where someone was asking has anybody been copycatted. One woman replied that she had been the copycat. All through high school and early uni career she obsessed over and copycatted certain friends. Eventually there was a confrontation and intervention that led to her seeking psychiatric help. Turned out she has a personality disorder. It's now a decade later and she's doing much better.
This is not real. Just. Not. Real. There are grammatical idiosyncracies that suggest it might have been written by a non-English speaker (Indians drop articles before nouns but no one else does), American students don't say "uni", and the original on Reddit has 19 year olds drinking, which doesn't happen in America. No University would take action in such a circumstance. It's moralistic fiction for upvotes, designed to make the reader indignant. Don't expect an update.
Wow! You've probably never heard of it but there is a movie from 1992 calledSingle White Female that's about a situation very similar to this. Copycat turns out to be a psychopath and a killer. At the least this girl has self esteem issues at worst......you can guess where I'm going. Be careful and I hope this gets resolved positively for you.
Reminds me of the movie Single White Female staring Bridget Fonda

What has university officially do with this? Also, that girl needs a therapist, who my help her find herself.
Many universities have counseling services (and some may recommend further therapy). Her complaint may be the opening she needs to get help.
Load More Replies...The OP is not necessarily the AH in this but what she did was out of malice. Now doing something out of malice does not really make someone an AH. In this case however it's out of ignorance. Yes that Kaya character is creepy. But from what I've seen of people like these over the years, it is often the sign of low self confidence. They see someone they feel should be the "standard" to which to strive for, they emulate them, sometimes going too far. So yeah, the OP may want to teach her a lesson, but she only ended up hurting a person who is already vulnerable to begin with. Personally, I wouldn't be bothered with the copying behaviour or do anything about it.
Op is not responsible for others' self-esteem and her obsessive behaviour was making her uncomfortable so it's not op's fault that she copy her

These seems suspicious. Why on earth would a hairdresser know how to fake a shaved head? I mean, that mainly only happens for the movies or a play, right? If she had a job in those industries, she wouldn't be a regular hairdresser would she? Not impossible, but it seems quite unlikely. ( I hear that people make up stories for AITA a lot.)
I have to go with a soft YTA/ESH for the prank on this one. I think a lot of the NTA responders knew the prank wasn't totally ok because they're advising her to lie about her behavior and motivation to the university. The copycat was being annoying but her actions also point to mental instability. The bald head prank was conceived by two drunk kids who thought there was no way she'd really do it. They were not thinking about what if their target was actually mentally unsound enough to do it. So a bit assholish but I can't judge these kids too harshly. If they were experienced adults, I'd lean more YTA on this. I don't think they really intended her to shave her head. NTA for not paying for the wig. Ultimately, the copycat makes her own choices. She's learning the hard way. While I suspect she needs psychological help, it isn't someone else's duty to armchair psychoanalyze her and take responsibility for her. Plus, her behavior after the fact is abusive.
The number of people who believe this 🤣🤣 The commenter got involved?! The quality of Bored Panda has dropped so much recently. Today I read that someone commented something snobby and unnecessary as they are now trying to get as much attention as possible. Ridiculous.
