I am from the USA went to public school and know geography quite well. I think it depends on the person. There are stupid people everywhere.

Schools stopped teaching geography a couple decades ago, same with Civics (government). We are now reaping the “benefits” of that “wisdom” (hell yes, quotation marks fully intentional, they were two of the dumbest decisions “educators” ever made).

It's a sterotype that Americans don't know anything about the world outside the US, but I assume it varies a lot. On average the American education system isn't great, but they also have some of the bests schools, so..

USA is a very large country snd their people speak of regions tied to the compass, e.g. out west, up north, down south. Guessing that the poster confused the idioms for US regions with what was intended.

He11 - Most of the time they don't know geography INSIDE the United States either. I was at work and there was an argument if there was 48, 50, 51, or 52 states. All of the people involved in the argument were born or at least raised in the US. Because of our maps there are a stupid amount of people who think Hawaii and Alaska are right by each other...I'm constantly amazed by TV personalities who go "to the streets" to conduct interviews and ask passersby basic questions a school child should be able to answer, and are SO wrong - which is why there is now a game show named "Are you smarter than a 5th grader?". It's both hilarious and sad....

Some people don't understand it well, and a lot of schools (at least in my area) teach this once and never go over it again, or only things that apply to them (that state, or neighboring states. Sometimes political matters as well). This means most of us can't name more than half depending on the education we had access to.

I guess part of the problem lies in people calling the US America, it's the United States, the United States of America already implying there might be more in America than just the States. But these days people are all Murica f**k yeah. Helping them think they're all the America there is.

Yes. Americans are very dumb when it comes to geography. Even when speaking about our own country. A lot of people think we have 51 states. It's very embarrassing
