Most of us believe that clothes have “genders.” Our society has the idea that some things are “fitting” for a man or woman to wear, and some aren’t. However, some open-minded people wear whatever they want and express themselves freely, not needing to live up to any stereotype. Like the inspiring Mark Bryan, who proves it’s finally time to eliminate gender stereotypes, especially in clothing.

Who Is Mark Bryan?

Meet Mark Bryan, a man who wears skirts and heels. Mark is an American robotic engineer who lives in Germany. He lives his life like every other person, except that he challenges gender stereotypes every day. He almost always wears a skirt and heels while going to work, to the town, and even at home. And let’s just say he looks fabulous while he does.

After my dad died, I found slides. Miniskirts were involved. No one else in my family knows or has seen them. It’s been so sad that he needed to hide, and that I’ve felt the need to protect him. The pictures are adorable.

I'm a 6'o", 190lb male, 53y/o.. I love the way I look in a cute skirt, strappy heel sandals and a fun mani/pedi. If I didn't think I look GREAT this way, I would go back to "urban masculine camouflage" (tan khaki pants, polo shirt, sneakers). Part of the reason I am passionate about my clothing preference, is because I feel that I am defying a sexist prejudice against women - the one that says "a man shouldn't wear that.. he devalues himself if he does.. because people associate that with women and girls... who are inferior to men/males". For 45 years, that assumption (unspoken, unrealized, unconsidered..) dictated my clothing choices every single day - but ehrn I actually thought about "but, WHY would a skirt be "demeaning" for me?", I realized that I had been unconsciously helping to perpetuate that sexist prejudice in society - then, my only choices became DELIBERATE support of all that, ir DEFIANCE. I chose defiance, and I haven't looked back!

The reason women tend to think it's demeaning to wear tight, short skirts and impractically high heels is because this clothing has traditionally been worn to consciously and deliberately attract the sexual attention of men, not because women are inferior! Dressing to attract sexual attention is a fairly passive behaviour, and men are traditionally more active sexually than standing around waiting to be looked at - this would be why it's not a top clothes choice for masculine men. Add to this that you cannot be physically active dressed in tight skirts and high stiletto heels. As for stereotyping, this is stereotypically worn by women in their sexual prime. If it wasn't associated with sexually powerful women, (some) men wouldn't want to wear it. There's nothing wrong with stereotypes, only with being forced into them, or excluded from them. Go for it, but don't pretend it's gender-neutral or non-sexual.

Sure he does!!! It's a bit too extreme looking for him to be unnoticed. Besides, how someone look at him & Not think he is other than undeniably straight??? Ask yourself also, what's his motivation for this course of action. Finally, I would reference the Bible, specifically where it states an effeminate will Not be allowed entrance into Heaven. Overall I see this Mark's actions as a Cheap Stunt or Grossly Misguided Venture.

Part 2: I'm female and I happen to love that look on a man but today it only seems chic to dress in that fashion if you are of Scottish ancestry, living in Scotland, an actor portraying a Scott on film or TV or for a formal occasion such as a wedding. I wish that they would bring back ways to get clothing like that for those of us that would love wearing such items at other places other than say Renaissance faires or costume parties. To purchase hand made items that are replicas of items worn at those times from a vendor at a fair can cost you as much as a modern day engagement ring and there are very few places that even carry the materials to make your own if you can find a suitable pattern online and how to adapt it to your size, especially those of us that are plus size AND well endowed up top. Boneing alone breaks the bank. I've paid over 600 just for a corset 25+ years ago that I have since outgrown.

He has really long legs so that paired with the heels does look really good on him. Plus he is dressing for his body type. The pencil skirts show off his legs the best and the fact that he has a cute butt too doesn't hurt. But can't we attribute the skirts on men to say yesteryear with the Scottish with kilts?

In the past this was the costume of the men that hide in women's toilets and whan they were caught they pretended to be feminist and submitted to other men, but their true intentions were to abduct a child that entered a ladies toilet or a woman on her own, there is a good reason why women visit a public room in pairs, as unconsciously have been programmed to keep safe if they visit in pair's now with unisexual toilers and men open to dress as women, it's hard for women to be safe in public, it's Not liberation it's actually the opposite, to remove the individuality and identity of what is to be a woman, women should not admire these men, they are wolf's in sheep's clothing the rapist of yesterday in today's world

This is great your so confident, I commend you. I want to wear a skirt but lack confidence in doing so to break the norm on male fashion. Where I live it is so out of the norm male dress is so monotone. If your young your free to express yourself, no questions asked, but as you get older this is more difficult where it is avoided. If you have no support difficult or do you just do it regardless, I feel stupid in a way.

If this guy walked by me on the street I’d turn my head and I may even giggle a little ( as would most of these others probably) but at the end of the day I wouldn’t really care. He’s still a person who deserves respect and for whatever reason he likes these clothes. Why should it be so angering to you? What is it about a piece of fabric that makes you so upset? May I suggest that you examine your assumptions? Why would clothing that you would accept on any female, be disgusting or "grotesque" to you when a male wears it? I presume you'd have no objection to him in "manly" clothes, and none fornthe clothes "on a female", so what is it about this combination that offends you? Is he "unworthy" because he has a penis? Or is he "demeaning" himself by associating (through clothing) with "inferior women"?

You have the right to your opinion. In my opinion, he had done much thinking about why he wears what he does, and you have simply followed customs given to you.. so he seems much less likely to be "confused" than you are. If a majority of people (still) thought "Earth is flat", would you be among those saying "Columbus, Magellan et al are so confused!"?

Mark told Bored Panda: “I dress like this because I can. Just to be different. I have always admired the women that wore tight skirts and heels. Not sexually, but the power they presented. I don’t dress to be sexual, but to dress like any professional woman would. To me, clothes have no gender. I prefer skirts to dresses. Dresses don’t allow me to mix the genders. I prefer a ‘masculine’ look above the waist and a non-gendered look below the waist. It’s all about clothes having no gender.”

“I feel no different as to me, it’s just clothes. Naturally, on a cold or windy day, it physically feels different. When wearing heels, I feel taller, but also empowered for some reason. In all, maybe having the inner strength to have the confidence to wear non-conforming clothing has also given me the confidence and strength to handle my pressures at work,” said Mark when asked how wearing heels and skirts makes him feel.

How Does He Find Feminine Clothes That Fit Him?

Mark Bryan is wearing a red shirt, high heels, gray skirt and holding a black briefcase

markbryan911 Report

A man who wears skirts and heels shared what it’s like to find feminine clothes that fit him: “I am 6’ tall and weigh around 165 lbs. I also have medium to small feet. I wear a size 8.5 US and 41 in Europe. I have a 29” waist, so I wear a size 8 skirt in the US or a 38 in Europe. I also work out 2–3 times a week. So finding clothes my size is no problem.”

“Old girlfriend in college asked me to dance with her with us both wearing heels. We did this for more than a year. I got very good at walking and moving in heels. Throughout the years, I have worn heels off and on, but not with skirts. I just started wearing heels with skirts in the last 5 years. It was suggested that I would look a lot better in a skirt and heels than pants and heels,” shared Mark when asked how he decided to start wearing heels and skirts.

“I buy most of my heels online so that I can try them at home. This way I can have some shoe time and try going up and down the stairs. Feel how much they slip, the stability when testing stilettos. I’ll also wear them while sitting for half an hour or so. If they hurt right out of the box, then back in the box they go. So having a good comfortable shoe is important, but so is the style.”

“My favorite is a 5-inch stiletto. I just love the way they make me look and the feeling they give. My least favorite thing is walking on uneven surfaces like a cobblestone walkway or a sidewalk with pavers that have gaps big enough to swallow a stiletto heel.”

He described how people react to him. Mark said that women, usually around the age of 30 to 40, give him compliments. Men make comments or ask questions but usually will not compliment his appearance.

“Take a person with bright green hair. Green hair is not normal. You look up and see this person, your mind tells you it’s a person with green hair, you think to yourself, that’s odd or interesting, then you go back to do what you were doing and don’t give it another thought. I believe this is the same when people see me in a skirt and heels.”

Mark has been happily married for 11 years and gets full support from his wife and family. “My wife often makes suggestions on what I should wear. My daughter wishes she could borrow my shoes at times.”

He Has Advice for Men Wearing Skirts and Heels

Mark shared some advice for men who want to wear skirts and heels but are too afraid. “If you are asking about heels, then I would say to start with a low heel and work your way up as your confidence gets higher. You cannot be afraid. Some people are like animals, they attack the weak. Show confidence and show the world you are not afraid and nobody will bother you. The only fear you have is fear itself. Skirts? Just do it. Maybe not with high heels, but skirts are much more acceptable on a man than a man wearing heels.”

The Middle Kingdom of Egypt saw the rise of men wearing longer kilts, almost like skirts, reaching from the waist to ankles, sometimes hanging from the armpits.

“I do this for non-sexual reasons. Men can wear this style without being labeled as gay or queer. I don’t act like a sissy, which is one of the most frequent comments I get from men. They just assume I’m gay and a sissy until they start talking to me. I am just an average, normal, straight, and happily married guy. I love beautiful women, Porsche, and I just want to incorporate a skirt and heels into my daily wardrobe.”

First ones I don't really like - more because they look like the foot isn't in the shoe comfortably.

Is It OK for Guys to Wear Skirts and High Heels?

It might not be common to see men in skirts, dresses, or heels, but people’s mindsets are changing. Clothing equality has yet to become a reality, but it takes a few brave people to bring about a change. Like a school in Scotland that celebrated the ‘Wear a skirt to school day!’ These unique initiatives spark debate and force people to question long-held beliefs.

The same goes for Mark Bryan’s bold clothing. What do you think of Mark’s fashion choices? Tell us in the comments and vote for your favorite pictures and styles!
