Train Ticket Conductor Demonstrates Detective Skills, Doesn’t Allow This Passenger To Fool Him
Sherlock Holmes is as British as afternoon tea, big hats, and the Queen. And it seems that some Brits sometimes invoke the spirit of the great detective when there’s a mystery afoot! Either him or the Scooby Gang.
Spanish stand-up comedian Ignacio Lopez witnessed “the most amazing thing” when he was on the train to Edinburgh and shared it with the Twitter community.
The story’s main characters are:
-A perceptive and inquisitive train conductor
-A deceitful passenger who lies to the conductor in order to get out of paying for his full ticket
-A sandwich that the passenger ate, leaving only a few crumbs behind

The passenger got on the train at Wigan and fell asleep in front of comedian Lopez; he got up an hour later, got a sandwich, ate it, and fell asleep again. That’s when the train conductor woke him, asking to see his ticket.
Naturally, the passenger didn’t have one, needed to buy one, and pretended that he got on at Carlisle to pay as little as he could. But! Yes! Aha!
The conductor does a spot of investigating, finds an hour-old receipt for the sandwich, and spots the crumbs on the passenger’s clothes. Though the passenger denies everything, the jig is up when the conductor spots that the last four numbers on the sandwich receipt match the Brit’s card. And the passenger would’ve gotten away with it if it wasn’t for that meddling conductor!
Anyone who’s had the pleasure of traveling by train in Britain knows that it’s a luxury. Tickets are expensive as heck! But why is that?
According to The Times, the prices of train tickets increased by 36 percent since 2010 (or 2.6 times more than the increase in earnings). So if you haven’t gotten a promotion at work since 2010, you’ve been losing money if you commute to work by train.
One of the key factors leading to price hikes is privatization. British Rail was privatized in 1994 to 1997, and ever since then ticket prices increased by 22 percent, while “walk-prices on some routes” rose by “an eye-watering” 245 percent by 2016.
Jeepers, Jinkies, and Zoinks! It’s no wonder that some people end up lying to conductors. However, if you’re not willing to pay the price of a train ticket, you should find an alternative method of transport. Lying and deceiving others for personal gain is no way to go through life. Because that’s when karma strikes in the form of sandwich crumbs on your clothes.

Privatization of a public service almost always results in major price increases and decreased services. The only people who gain anything from privatization are the bosses and the stockholders; everyone else loses.
Ironically, the train franchises are owned by French rail, Dutch rail, and Chinese. The only government that won't bid for our own train lines is our own government!

Who would vote for the sandwich guy? He's basically a thief. Unrelated - man, the prices for train tickets are high in the UK!
The worst part is, they keep rising. Every year, on 1st Jan, the prices go up by whatever %, the bosses running the companies make a massive profit, do f**k all to put any of it back into improving rail travel, and our government just sits there and lets it happen, regardless of which party is in charge, and what they promised before coming to power.

I was once riding the train back from visiting my parents. There were these 2 girls sitting across from me, one was about 7yrs & the other looked about 16 to me. When the train guard came by they showed him their tickets. (Mind you fares are different for 17 and under and 18+ but by not much) The guy asked the teen how old she was. She responded 15. He was skeptical and asked her again. She responded 15. So he asked to see an ID. She said she didn't have one (obviously not as she's not 18 yet). So he threatened to kick them off the train at the next stop for lying. She looked confused and worried. Now I was 20 at the time, but was always told I looked younger (15-16yrs). When the guy came to check my ticket, I asked " excuse me, how old do you think I am?" He says "15-16." To which i responded "oh! Then I bought the wrong ticket! Can I get a refund for the difference? Or to make it easier on you, she (pointing to the teen) can have my ticket and I'll take hers." He walked away lol
£71 for a single ride... the guy should have questioned the ticket officer. That's day light rubbery!
Wow, $250 for a one way train of 90 miles? He could've caught a flight for that. In the US Amtrak New York to Baltimore is only $85, or £38.
But a train to Baltimore wont get you to Edinburgh.

Financially cheaper than flying but the cost to the environment vs flying is cheaper by train.
What train English conductors being polite? Had them threatening to call the police on me because my disable card had run out that day and my new one did not come before my holiday, this was the last day of my holiday. I have had them man handling me at the station, supposedly directing me to my platform, they do not need to touch you for that. I have been told I have no right to a seat I have fully paid for, the kids have but I have not, do you want me to go on? I stopped using the train because of this
No sympathy for any Northern England train guards/conductors. I have only met with ignorance, cleverness (british cleverness) and down right insulting men.
People (mostly the homeless, which I feel bad about, but hey - rules are rules) riding the trolley without paying the fair is a huge problem down here. You can always tell who hasn't paid the second the transit cops come on board. Someone will be trying to get off at the back of the car - where another transit cop is usually waiting. You can ride from North County (San Diego) all the way to the border for $2.50 - why risk a $200 ticket?
Steve's an idiot. 1) most security tapes on transit are more or less live-streamed in case something happens. 2) at least here, the transit cops have tablets that let them pull that up whenever they need to contest something like this. 3) the chances of those for digits being identical is sufficient. circumstantial? sure. but it's enough for an arrest.
"Oh, I need to buy a ticket?" There should be a huge add-on for people who board trains without a ticket. I'm surprised he didn't try to hide in the lavatory.
