Pro-Vegan Guy Attacks iPhone Case Makers For Killing Animals To Make Cases, And Company’s Reply Goes Viral
Leather is the material. It’s used to make clothing, footwear, furniture, automobile seats, you name it. However, while the earliest record of leather artifacts date back to at least 2200 BC, a lot of today’s consumers have boycotted goods made from this material for an ethical reason. Killing animals. A good example of this is a recent comment one man left under a video about the making-of of a leather iPhone case.
The video was released by Saddleback Leather, a company that claims their products are 100% leather, as opposed to the other iPhone cases that are usually about 80% plastic and only 20% leather. The company responded to the criticism, pointing out that the material they use is only a by-product of other industries and there are much bigger problems in the smartphone-making business.
According to the United Nations, “the leather and leather products industry plays a prominent role in the world’s economy, with an estimated global trade value of approximately US$100 billion per year.”
“World population grew dramatically in the 20th century and it continues to grow at present. This growing population and the general increase in wealth have led to increases in the demand for meat, which in turn have kept the supply of leather raw material fairly constant.” In fact, so constant that, the raw material supplies for the leather industry reflected population growth throughout the whole 20th century. Also, “the ratio of cattle populations (by far the primary source of leather raw material) and leather produced to the size of human populations has remained remarkably steady for the last one hundred years.” The United Nations claims that, “the leather industry relies on by-products of the meat and dairy industries for over 95% of its raw materials.”

What do you think?
Regardless of moral high ground, the leather company had the more rational comment. But they both kinda ended up calling each other hypocrites. And you know, they both are hypocrites. Aren't we all if we're honest with ourselves?
The truth in this comment is bloody refreshing. Thank you!
Load More Replies...So...what would he use? Plastic? Ok. Plastic is made from petroleum, which is an environmental disaster on a whole bunch of fronts, from destroying habitats, to smoke belching factories and when it wears out (a LOT faster than leather does) it ends up in landfills where it will be for eternity, since it NEVER breaks down. ...///... How about cotton? Ok. Cotton is grown in heavily irrigated areas in depleted soil that requires millions of tons of petroleum based fertilizers and chemical insecticides. It must be processed in the aforementioned smoke-belching factories and assembled in even more factories, but that happens overseas so the self-righteous don't have to look at it. ...///... Leather is readily available, easily processed, and when you're done with it, it decomposes easily.
I was at a dinner once were a vegetarian was roast by a vegan cause she was a "hypocrite", "fake friend of animal" as she was using butter, milk or eggs and this is animal slavery. ( We, omnivorous, were never target) All the products this vegan girl brought to the dinner to replace or "monstruous products" were made with palm oil....

You can also buy/not buy whatever you choose and make a point that way. For example, I have never, and would never, eat McDonalds food or purchase anything that would put money in their corporate pockets. That's just a choice I make. Everyone else can eat there all day long. It's not my problem. It's not my job to attack companies or people. I speak with my wallet. If people want to know the good and the bad of an organization, they are free to research and decide for themselves. Everyone is allowed to have their own different thoughts, opinions and beliefs. I was a vegan for years and never once did I criticize or judge anyone else for making a different choice. I prefer to live and let live (and for me, that includes all the animals as well as the people).
Thank you for the great comment! It is the way everyone should think and act. Your life, your decisions. Period.
Load More Replies...Why the hell is everyone talking about killing animals for the leather as being a worse thing than producing plastic, which would be, for those aresholes the basic replacement raw material to use instead of animal skin. Kill one animal get 1000 or so wallets or phone cases. Make them out of plastic though, and you kill literally thousands of animals and people with waste and pollution.
Personally - and I'll try not to go on a tangent about this - I'm not a vegetarian, and I appreciate eating meat and making things from animal products, but I think that the way it's done on such a mass-market level is very uncomfortable for environmental reasons as well as ethical reasons (like, I don't want beef cattle to be in torturous conditions even if they'll be eaten). Either way, I feel like it's hypocritical for the leather company to talk about how phones are made unethically WHEN THEY'RE MAKING PHONE CASES. If you were making leather bags or coats or something, yeah, then you have an excuse because those are just "general products people need but made of leather", but you're making a product that RELIES ON THE THING YOU ARE CRITICIZING TO EXIST.
I think the point is that it is impossible to buy ethically all the time.

That vegan is an overly dramatic idiot for suggesting the company uses horse hides, dogs, or cats for these leather products. Anyone who falls for such a false accusation is also an idiot. Cow hides are largely a byproduct of the meat industry, and it makes sense to use every part of an animal that has already been killed. Not using the hides would be a bigger waste of the animal’s death. A decreasing market in leather goods would not decrease the slaughter of these animals; the hides would just get wasted. The meat industry is too big and profitable to care what happens to hides. Ranchers would find their own uses for hides or, even worse... waste the hides and get more subsidies from the government to make up for lost profits.
Most vegans I've encountered are overly dramatic, not realizing they're shooting themselves in their collective feet.

The easiest solution would be to develop a synthetic product which performs better then real leather and is cheaper. Until this happens animal products such as leather are simply superior to faux alternatives. Skins are grown to last a lifetime. - Far better to use them to let them go to waste.
Yes! What do militant vegans ultimately want? Every cow to die a natural death, encased in its glorious leather skin and then be buried at a bovine cemetery?
Load More Replies...If you don't use the skin and eat the meat then the cow died for nothing. THAT's a waste.
And the bones and blood can be used as fertilizer. Use everything usable.
Load More Replies...I appreciate the morality people have regarding leather or killing animals for leather, however, and I'm putting this out there, did anyone check to see which animals the leather is from? I mean if is cows, sheep or other animals people eat, wouldn't it be better to use their skin than waste it? Those animals will be killed and eaten by someone, so why waste their skin. I prefer the whole animal is used and its death mean more than a steak. But that's just me. I agree with not killing just for the leather, but if the leather is from animals already being killed for food, then let's not waste any part of it. But hey, each to his own!
Just for reference: A live steer is worth about $2300 and the hide is worth about $110, or just under 5% of the total value (based on 2014 commodity prices. I could be wrong, but I assume that percentage doesn't change all that much from year to year. source: http://feedlotmagazine.com/byproduct-exports-important-to-cattle-prices/).
Here is my two cents worth which will not make a lick of difference to others
I'd love a phone case made from a soft and fluffy dog or kitty, imagine how luxurious it would feel. /sarcasm Regardless of the economics and ethics of using leather for products, that vegan is a total moron and no doubt a hypocrite too.
Did the anti-leather people not see the Bored Panda post about the young woman who gave up being vegan, and stated that she looks and feels SOOOOO much better? lol But seriously, unless you are wearing/using NO by-products of animal, not supporting slave-labor of many third-world countries (and including the USA), not driving a fossil-fueled vehicle, etc... then one should shut one's proverbial pie-hole and just live your own life, and stop worrying about others. *I'll get off my soapbox now. Thanks for letting me rant. ;)

I'm anti diamond. Slavery, child soldiers, etc. Some supermodels pose naked to disparage the fur industry but have no problem with draping themselves in diamonds or leather. It doesn't make sense. Humans suffer due to the diamond industry. It's easy to point a finger. Leather, fur, meat, diamonds. There are always alternatives. But that is sometimes oil based products and we don't like those either. But let's just try our best to do what's right.

is there a thing contrary to being a vegan? like they are concern about fruits and vegetables that grows and being harvested and cuts to pieces for the consumption of vegan? I know plants have feelings too and we need them to produce oxygen that we breathe.
So, does the anti-leather person have a cell phone? Do they care about the plastic body and parts contributing to climate change? Do they have a plastic phone cover, ditto? Do they care about slave labor and mining tailings and etc? You change your environment just by standing in one place until you die of dehydration - seeing as you don't want to impact your environment negatively by drinking water. Actually that style of ewaste disposal has diminished ENORMOUSLY in the last 10 years. The process of breaking down ewaste is now a quite-well refined mechanical process. And actually, many 'recycled' smartphones are actually literally recycled. They arrive in those poorer parts of the world, are sorted by manufacturer and model, then guys who would make MacGuyver s**t himself take the pile of brokenness and churn out perfectly working phones by swapping parts back and forth. That's how those less-developed places manage to put an iPhone3 in every pocket. I also appreciate that the leather feels better in the hand, is more grippy than plastic, can be tooled with traditional leather-working tools into whatever design you want, and will certainly be biodegradable in the end. Alright, but why sell the cover so expensive, when you got it from the people who were going to throw it? So you saying you got the skin for peanuts, and selling it for Dollars.. hmm?
