As an '80s kid, I'm often nostalgic about that era. I sometimes hear myself speaking and I sound like my grandparents when they bragged about how things were better “before”.

To be honest, I do think things were better before. Ha! The eighties were an amazing time to live in and anyone who disagrees simply wasn’t around yet.

But let’s be honest, some things are just so much easier now, right? I created this comic series called “Strange things from the past” because some things are better now and some things were better then.

I had a blast making it. It was a little travel back in time and I hope you’ll travel too!

My sister and I did the same, and we would record fake radio segments between songs. I would pay thousands to get my hands on one of those old cassettes we made.

And then, in the middle of the song - a bloody commercial message from "our sponsor"!

I recorded the song "Heaven In Your Eyes" by Loverboy and DJ talked over then end. I listened to the recording so many times that I now cannot hear the song without hearing the words "Great parking song!" in my head at the end. EVERY. DAMN. TIME.

And the hours and hours of listening to songs and writing down the lyrics - totally incorrectly, of course XD

Totally did this all the time! It was really annoying when the DJ wouldn't shut the F up and talked over the beginning of the song.

LOL. This is all well and good, and everything in it is true, but this is only recent history. I am a 50s kid. You guys had it made compared to us. No portable radios, very few TVs, and they all ran on vacuum tubes (look it up), no electronics (chips had not been invented yet). Cars were just cars. You did all the driving. It did not try to drive for you or turn the lights on and off by itself. They had AM radios only. FM and tape players weren't even dreams, never mind CDs or MP3. We walked to school or rode our bikes. We washed and dried the dishes by hand (horrors!). If you got cancer, the doctors wrote you off. Cigarettes were still cool, but pot, coke, and meth were unheard of. Movies cost a dime instead of $10 like they do now. Phones were black with actual dials and hung on the wall. And the lines were shared. If your neighbor was yakking on the phone, you had to interrupt them so you could call the doctor. No fast food places either. Ah yes, the good old days. Right?

They talk over it on purpose at the end so you couldn’t and can’t get a clean recording.

The best thing about this cartoon is that she's holding the antenna - better reception!

there are still songs I hear on the radio now that I can remember exactly what the radio announcer was saying over them in the 80s and it feels a bit weird to hear the songs without it.

@amy frank, why? were you recording with an answering machine? Recorders only recorded the signal of the selected input so tapes on radio would only record radio, tapes on vinyl would only record vinyl and so on lol

I used to just press the record every time and then if it wasn't it I would just rewind it and do it again at beginning of the next song. And we all have that weird saying in the beginning of the song that you think of every time because that's what we heard the DJ say, over and over again

Even before VCRs I was recording audio of The DeFrancos on TV. My a*****e brothers started singing. Made me cry. Made Mom yell at them. Got the whole thing on tape which as an adult I have digitized to an mp3. We listen to it every few years when we all get together.

The best thing in the early 80s was a walkman and you really could walk and run while listening to it. The discman came much later, in the middle of the 80s.

I blame YouTube for the horrendous way eyebrows have devolved into hideously unnatural geometric smears on otherwise beautiful faces.
