As an '80s kid, I'm often nostalgic about that era. I sometimes hear myself speaking and I sound like my grandparents when they bragged about how things were better “before”.

To be honest, I do think things were better before. Ha! The eighties were an amazing time to live in and anyone who disagrees simply wasn’t around yet.

But let’s be honest, some things are just so much easier now, right? I created this comic series called “Strange things from the past” because some things are better now and some things were better then.

I had a blast making it. It was a little travel back in time and I hope you’ll travel too!

I had one of those clear colored phones. I loved it so much. It HADDD to have an extra long cord.

The best thing in the early 80s was a walkman and you really could walk and run while listening to it. The discman came much later, in the middle of the 80s.

Do not miss smoking in restaurants or other public areas at all

I do, but only in a minor role. At a BAR. When you are a smoker and you drink, you want a smoke. Nothing like ruining your buzz to get up and step outside to smoke, then come back in. After all, you sort of paid for it. HOWEVER, the health risks to others is not fair. So, IMO, if you have a staff that are all smokers and dont care, and all of your patron smoke, it should be allowed for that bar. But I completely understand and agree why this is not the case.

I'm a smoker, but there's definitely no need for it on public transport.

I still remember my parents going to the back of the plane to smoke. They always reaked. The whole plane reaked. Like the back 5 rows made any difference at all. Smh

The non-smoking section of a restaurant was kind of like the non-peeing part of the swimming pool...

Occasionally, I remember what it was like, how nauseaus and ill I often felt and keep thanking the universe for finally being able to enjoy my life.

Notice how she’s turning green? She’s getting sick from exposure to all the c**p in cigarette smoke. I have the same reaction to cigarette smoke and car/boat exhaust. I’m OK at first, but there comes a point when I start feeling sick. I mean a thumping headache and nausea. Mis-er-a-ble. Takes a while to get rid of it too. Fresh air helps a lot. I remember when you could smoke on airplanes, and always felt sick when it got overpowering or the flight lasted too long. Same with restaurants. The rise of totally non-smoking businesses, hotels, and office buildings were a godsend for anyone like me.

In Japan, a few restaurants and cafes are still like that ... That's one thing I think should stay in the past.

I'm not sorry this went. I'm even less sorry that smoking is falling out of favor. Each to their own but my asthma has never been better.

Yeah. And had to walk through the smoking section in restaurants to get to the non-smoking section.

I'm soooooo thankful this era is gone. I won't do business with restaurants that allow smoking. It's disgusting. Plus I have kids. Don't want them breathing second hand smoke.

Imagine my shock and happiness when California actually got smoking out of BARS!!! It doesn't affect me, but I didn't think it could ever happen.

Same day soon people will find it weird smoking used to be legal where anyone passing by risked inhaling the smoke.

LOVED those short little partitions that the all the restaurants had to divide the smoking and non smoking. Because then the smoke knew not to go on the other side of that 5 inch tall piece of glass on top of the booths. (That's a joke, but seriously it's a funny concept.)

Luckily before a flight from Europe to Canada by Lufthansa I learned about a international law: When a non smoker has to be sitting in the smokers section then the three rows in the front and back from there

I miss smoking on the trains. The areas were well seperated, no one was harrassed by anything. Easily done: The pressure in smoking areas has to be slightly higher to avoid air flowing in the wrong direction - and everything is fine...

No way: I remember when I was smoking in an airplane and the air recirculation system was so efficient that there was no smell of smoke at a very short distance.

You were just used to smelling smoke wherever you went. I'd bet if you were on that same plane now, you'd realize how dirty the air was.

The air was cleaner on planes back then because they would filter out the smoke. Nowadays you are much more likely to have stale air and catch infections from your fellow passengers. Yup, airlines found a way to make non-smoking flights UNhealthy!! Filtering air costs money, they don't have to so they won't spend the money now..

Nonsense -- planes reeked then and they still circulate air now. Don't say silly things!

I blame YouTube for the horrendous way eyebrows have devolved into hideously unnatural geometric smears on otherwise beautiful faces.
