Not that long ago I saw an excerpt from a conference with an overwhelmingly white audience. The sociologist that was conducting this symposium asked if given a choice would anyone in the audience choose to live their life in this country (U.S.A.) as a black person. Not a single person raised their hand. She made her point and continued with a lecture on empathy.

I would have been accepted into my dream engineering school if I was treated as if I was black. I had 3 classmates get into the school with lower GPAs and lower SAT & ACT scores than me. Affirmative action focused on skin color instead of results. I guess my white privilege membership needed renewal.

This kind of figure-ground reversal may be old hat as a plot device, but it makes a point.

This isn't tied to racism, it's a human condition. There are obviously exceptions, but you can say this about anything. What about the women in the Middle East that are treated like property, or the rain forests that are getting destroyed, or the environment were working hard to destroy? I don't see a lot of people that seem to care that these things happen, and everyone still wants their new upgraded phone each year. Amazon wouldn't be so big if people didn't keep filling their homes with junk. Obviously there are exceptions, but I don't see many people trying to protect those in far worse situations outside of western culture.

Same way people here in the US have politicized wearing a mask due to a Covid 19. They think it's their 'right' to not wear one instead of thinking of others - until they or a loved one gets sick, then they start screaming for the masks .... it's sad but true how people can think
