Jefferson Davis (the president of the confederacy) had ever intention of freeing the slaves, but he wanted to do it with a system in place. Lincoln freed them with no plan or system so they went on for the next 100 years even today still trying to earn their place. There is so much more to the civil war than what we think we know.
