Pro-Life Protester Calls Abortion Clinic Patient A Coward, Clinic’s Volunteer Destroys Her With Words
InterviewPro-life vs. pro-choice has always been a heated point of debate and opinion among people—mostly between those of a more liberal and those of a more traditional approach to things. And then there’s everyone stuck between these two groups talking it out.
Meet Wendy Shannon, a 26-year-old mother of 4 and a clinic defender who has been recently going viral on the interwebs for two reasons: one, she was defending a person arriving to an abortion clinic against some hateful protesters, and two, “sky daddy.”

So, Wendy, with whom Bored Panda got in touch, is a part of an organization called Charlotte for Choice, which is based in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she volunteers as a clinic defender and clinic escort.
You see, a clinic defender is a person who stands in front of an abortion clinic and makes sure protesters are kept at bay—they hold up parking signs and talk over the protesters in hopes of making sure the patients don’t hear all the protesting. As for clinic escorts, those are people who escort patients from their cars to the clinic, holding an umbrella to ensure privacy.
So, Wendy was on guard duty and a patient had just passed by when one of the protesters, Jennifer, who’s a part of the Love Life organization, called the patient a coward.
A pro-life protester called one of the patients “a coward”, which prompted Wendy to come to the patient’s defense

“I volunteer at the clinic because I think that people have a right to access a safe abortion without being yelled at. Although I love volunteering, I feel like this shouldn’t have to be a thing!” elaborated Wendy. “I just want to make sure the patients know that we don’t think it’s right that people are yelling at them and we don’t mind being the barrier between them accessing a safe abortion and those yelling at them.”
At this point, Wendy snapped and started giving Jen a piece of her mind. Wendy said that Love Life’s volunteers are supposed to spread love and light, yet Jennifer was tearing down a person who was already dealing with a lot at that point, and she became the reason why patients are scared to come to an abortion clinic in the first place.
Instead of being loving and caring, Jennifer, the pro-life protester, chose to be hateful

“How can you sit there and talk to someone like that when they’re already in a vulnerable situation,” said Wendy. “Why would they even approach Jennifer after she had talked to them like that?” One of the other volunteers was taking a video of Wendy, who was trying to explain how wrong Jennifer’s words and actions were, during which she said “Is that the validation you want from sky daddy?” to which Jennifer had nothing to say.
Needless to say, the video took off, in part due to people being amazed that clinic defenders are a thing and how much they do just so the patients feel safer in their time of need. But also because of “sky daddy,” a phrase that has echoed throughout the internet.
The video went viral on TikTok, gaining 9.4 million views with over 1.6 million likes, but also found its way to a number of social media websites, including Twitter, as well as a number of news media outlets, making “sky daddy” a trending keyword for days.

Turns out, it’s a phrase that many people use in the clinic that Wendy volunteers at, and some claim that the term has been around for a while, but it is not that it was popularized to such a degree. People online were both praising the woman for her courage in actually doing the volunteering that she does, but were also pointing out just how brilliant of a term “sky daddy” is.
After going viral, Wendy posted another video on her Instagram, explaining how she tried to reason with Jennifer after the incident, but to no avail. “She didn’t care and she has a very hate-filled heart. She told me that she doesn’t believe Jesus died on the cross for everyone, [but rather] only those elected by sky daddy,” elaborated the Instagram video caption.
During the confrontation, Wendy used the term “sky daddy” which resonated throughout the internet

Wendy was surprised that all of this went viral, as she told Bored Panda:
“I wasn’t expecting it at all! To me, it changes nothing. I’m still going out there as much as I can. I just hope all of this opens Jennifer’s heart. I love all the comments about ‘sky daddy,’” laughed Wendy. “It’s not a new concept at all, we use that all the time. But one thing that stands out the most to me is that people are wanting to volunteer with their local clinics. So that is pretty amazing and I’m glad that something good can come from this!”

Share on FacebookI'm Christian and pro-life but completely agree with Wendy. Women who choose to get abortions aren't "monsters" and it's frustrating when people try to force their opinions onto others by shutting others down and insulting them. God calls us to love all people and I wish more Christians shared this sentiment. Women who choose to get abortions, while they might not be sharing the same beliefs/values as pro-life, deserves to be loved just as much as a woman who chooses to keep her baby.
You are a rare true Christian. We need more respectful Christians like you, god bless you. (Sorry if that sounded sarcastic, it was not meant to be)
Load More Replies..."Pro-life" is the fallacious term institutionalized by the right. The correct term is "anti-choice."
The correct term is "pro-birth." They only care that the fetus is BORN, not that it thrives.
Load More Replies...I have way too much first-hand experience of just how hateful, vicious, depraved and cruel anti-choice activists are. They think they have a higher power on their side, so they can get away with anything they want.
... and even make up a dilemma where there is none - and that's just the first mistake! Next is the distinction between animals and humans - humans are animals. With some special features and stuff, but that only changes what we do, maybe who we are, but it doesn't change what we are. Third is, somehow, assuming they'd have a say in the decision, while they are not affected by it at all. The fetus that cannot feel anthing can't lead into the same moral implications as an actual person, or sentient being of any kind, would. And no one is ever gonna force them to have an abortion, while the other way round often enough is tried and even successfully so sometimes.
Load More Replies...Pro-lifers are against abortion, so make it mandatory for them to adopt the children they "saved'. Sit and watch how fast their "strong convictions" dwindle.
while i have always been pro choice i think the thing that made me what some would call a radical pro choice was when it was discovered that many of these christian pro life groups will stand outside clinics and plead w/women to change their minds. if they need medical help, food, shelter, or anything that will make it easier for them they will provide it...until it was past the time an abortion would be possible. then, they would fade away, their resources 'disappeared' & these desperate women would left with a situation that is more desperate than before. it's a choice of the woman and no one else's. bless wendy and others who support women during a stressful event.
These m*therf*ckers, I hate when they come to the clinic and sing about how we are all going to hell >:I
Just coming here to add ONE MORE positive comment <3 abortion is a right. keep abortion free and legal! ** cheers to these defenders
Among the numerous facts that anti-choice zealots ignore is that making abortion a crime and closing women's health centers isn't going to make it go away. It will just move from safe, sterile environments with qualified medical personnel into back alleys with no oversight. Before Roe v.Wade there were plenty of abortions and plenty of deaths and crippling infections.
This is upsetting, these women are going through something so difficult and these hate filled people make it so much harder. I think if these people were asked to pay for the expenses of the children of those who they harass, they would quickly change their minds
I am a Christian, but I am also pro choice. I do not believe that it is anyone else's business what someone does with their body. Yes, the Bible states that we are to be fruitful and multiply. However, in the Bible, Jesus said that we are to love one another. Standing outside an abortion clinic yelling hateful words is not showing love for your fellow human. I just wish that people would stop just calling themselves Christians and actually act like one. Loving others is what a true Christian does.
one time my friend had just gone to a baby shower and somehow managed to get all these tiny plastic babies. So we got this idea to put them in in water balloons with red food coloring. We drove by Planned Parenthood and pelted the protesters. Twice. We were late twenties so we're lucky no one go our license plate number. But we made the news!
Can't these people spend more time to help educate the public on safe sex to avoid this problem in the first place? Can't put themselves forward to help victims of sexual assult? Why blame the victims when there are more peaceful ways to resolve it?
Because these people really care more about controlling women than protecting babies.
Load More Replies...Nobody has the right to judge anybody whether they believe in God or not. If one believes in God then God is the only judge with any authority and believe me, HE doesn't stand there judging these women and neither should we.
I'm Catholic and pro-choice. When I was young, I found myself in this patient's position. I'm also old enough (66) to remember when women found themselves going into alleys where someone would use a coat hanger to terminate a pregnancy. Some of those women died as a result of massive bleeding or infection. I'm thankful that if a woman finds herself needing to terminate a pregnancy that she can go to a clinic. I'm opposed to it being used as a method of birth control, but sometimes one finds themselves in a position where that is not the case. Speaking from experience, it is NOT an easy decision!
As a practicing Catholic, at what point do you believe life begins?
Load More Replies...I keep thinking of the women who really wanted this child but it is deformed and/or dead. Or their life is in danger, or it is a cystic pregnancy or or or... And they need an abortion and have to go past those truly despicable and evil bottomfeeders. This scum could invest time and money in lving children. The US have an appalingly high infant mortality - the worst in all OECD coutries. There is so much one could do to save lives. Instead this scum preys on the downtrodden and vulnerable and actually manage to convince themselves they do 'good'. I hope they burn in hell for this.
I've never seen clinic defenders or escorts in Australia - I don't think we need them here. I'd do it if we needed them, though - but I cannot imagine living in a country where behaviour like that is tolerated. It must be awful.
Years ago, doing clinic defense, we'd order coffee, donuts, pizza and share it with the lifers. When they realized who it was coming from they'd throw it away.
To make a choice to go to the clinic knowing that you will be in the line of fire from people that do not know your life, or actually what you might be going in there for is "that" persons choice. Nothing anyone says to you passing by to enter that building is their business. Defenders are great. Protesters where I live take it wayyyy far with bloody signs and more. Honestly those protesters need jobs an not to be sprouting hate. Regardless if they say they are preaching "sky daddy's" word. Sky daddy said love each other or something like that. Not throw stones. They have pills, physicals, other medical things going on in PP besides terminations. Don't assume everyone going in is getting one service. Stupid Karens.
A lot of pro-choice folks talk about abortions like the vast majority of people getting them have been a victim of rape or incest. Or the life of the mother is at risk. I also often hear the argument that no one cares for a baby/mother after it is born. If abortion were made illegal with the exceptions of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother, would that silence those arguments on those particular subjects? Also many programs exist to care for children and mothers. Including welfare, WIC, SNAP, Medicaid, CHIP, government subsidized housing, food stamps, housing vouchers, LiHEAP, Supplemental Security Income, TANF, Head Start, Federal Pell Grant Program, to name a few. And these are just government programs. There are also seemingly countless private organizations that provide similar styles of programs. l really don't understand the argument that no one cares after the fact. There's literally trillions of dollars set aside to support a mother that has a baby under hardships.
Have you ever had to apply for and/or use these programs? They are not easy to get into & the application process alone can take months. My sister has been on a waiting list for almost a year for housing. Another friend got maybe $80 per month for groceries. And these are just a few examples of from people who actually qualified! Ive seen way more folks get NOTHING! They make too much money, they are owed child support (that obviously never comes), they've had to go through custody & CS mediations before they could be considered. Thats not getting into the fact of the government cutting lots of those benefits, making help harder to get & maintain while getting less help. Dont even get me started on the stigma that goes along with using these "benefits" in our society.
