Italian Artist Gives Classical Sculptures Criminal Tattoos, Makes Them Look Totally Badass

Ever wondered what well-known classical sculptures would look like if they’d joined some of the world’s scariest gangs? Then check out these incredible statues with prison tattoos all over them to see for yourself.

The “tattooist” behind them is actually Fabio Viale, an Italian artist who aims to show us a new way of looking at classical art. Using the bodies of beautiful sculptures such as the Venus de Milo as his canvas, the artist decorates them with realistic tattoo designs inspired by the patterns born in Russian gangs and the Japanese Yakuza. The end result delivers a sharp contrast between the traditional purity associated with classical sculpture art and the dark and gritty connotations of the cool tattoos they bear.

Damn. Doesn't anyone else watch A & E or true stories or Vice etc? They aren't criminal b/c they're tattooed it's the symbolism behind the tattoos. They're Russian gangster tattoos and Japanes Yakuza tattoos. https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/9bzvbp/russian-criminal-tattoo-fuel-damon-murray-interview-876 and http://www.ranker.com/list/yakuza-tattoo-meanings/christopher-myers if you're bored.

No. But mafia clans tend to tatoo-sign their members with specific symbols of the group.

I believe in Real Life, all of that would be legally labeled as Vandalism. Even in Russia or Japan as well. If someone wished to have that all over their bodies, fine: its their property. But lets not think of doing this to classic Greek sculpture, where it is totally out of place.

I think this is an interesting idea. It's not like he reaches out the original statues and ruins them (security guards would kick him out right away if he even tried), he most likely uses replicas and decorates them as he pleases.
