Student Shares Pics From Art Book In His Former Christian College And The Censorship Is Beyond Ridiculous

Student Shares Pics From Art Book In His Former Christian College And The Censorship Is Beyond Ridiculous

Art students at Pensacola Christian College are, according to the college’s website, “equipped to share Christ through the visual arts, music, or dramatic performance.”  Fair enough. A rather niche area of study, but each to their own, right?

Art history features prominently in the curriculum, as students are encouraged to gain a biblically supported understanding of the arts. What a wondrous world awaits the student! Feasting on the fruits of human imagination since the dawn of time, they will learn all about the life and times of some true icons of mankind, from Michelangelo and Da Vinci to Van Gogh, Picasso and Dali. Talk about putting the fun back into fundamentalist Christian schooling!

However, not is all as it seems. Denial of history is a common tactic among the more hardcore religiously-minded, and while it’s not exactly the Taliban blowing up ancient statues of Buddha in Afghanistan, feeling the need to censor the slightest hint of cleavage on the Mona Lisa is sensitivity bordering on the extreme.

How are students supposed to learn the history of art when the realities of the times are fastidiously covered up? Someone, somewhere, had the onerous task of ‘clothing’ an entire textbook’s worth of iconic figures deemed too ‘risque’ by the prudish art department, with classical genitals, boobs and bums crudely drawn over in black marker.

The results are sad for the students, whose worldview is tragically limited by the religious police, but quite hilarious for us, as we see the lengths that some Christians will go to maintain their ideological ‘purity.’

Pensacola Christian College is located in Pensacola, Florida and was founded in 1974. Their goal is to “train young men and women in higher education for a life of service to Jesus Christ,” and to “promote the cause of Christ by providing a distinctively Christian-traditional, liberal arts education that develops students spiritually, intellectually, morally, culturally, and socially.”

The school is free to teach as it chooses, but what do you think about this kind of censorship? What do you think that sheltering students from reality like this, hopes to achieve? Let us know what you think in the comments!

The Imgur user who shared the images gave their view on the bizarre textbook

While others were just baffled by it all

So, Mona Lisa aside, they've censored parts of the Sistine's Chapel. Which is in Vatican. So... Vatican is not religious enough? I'm so confused.

Nowhere does the Bible say "Thou shalt not behold a penis" or "Thou shalt avert thine eyes from the hint of cleavage". Good grief. Many of these images are literally religious images from religious sources. Where do these people get these bizarre ideas?

Also on a cover of a book use some nail polish remover to get rid of the most of it. Inside books you can do the same but you need to use a q-tip and work very genly... You can't really use that on magazines though...

It is an unfortunately ignorant & utter moronic trait. In every country with NO state & church separation, this utter idiotic behavior exists. The USA is the ONLY country of all the western civilizations which still has a mind blowing high amount of religious people (approx 70%!!!! are christian). Various studies have shown there is a direct link between religion & IQ level, probably the reason the average USA IQ ranks as 1 of the lowest in comparison to other average IQ's of similar western culture countries. When you think of it: 90% of all the people in China are atheists......................!!! (edit: some grammar mistakes)

Odd that they censored religious art commissioned by the church/pope. I wonder why they decided to oppose the pope. I was always led to believe that religious people had respect for all things of history like the Bible and all tangible ties to the beginnings of their belief system (i.e. the shroud of Turin, spear of destiny, Gutenberg Bible, and scriptures rescued from various perils). Why is the Mona Lisa considered offensive? I just don't understand.

I have met my fair share of ignorant atheists, agnostics, and religious people. I'm Christian myself and think this censorship or parents "guarding" their children from sex ed is absolutely ridiculous. They're harming their kids, not protecting them. Christians are supposed to be open minded but some people are too busy bible thumping I guess.

I have said it before and I will say it again: Human beings are at their most dangerous when they believe they are the sole owners of The Truth and they have decided to make the world a better place. Their so-called `truth` may be any religious conviction or a political philosophy taken to the extreme. This particular censorship at a religious college is also an oxymoron since if they do believe that man was created naked, then how come they also believe that nakedness is bad in itself? However, what makes this totally bewildering for me is how on earth is this even allowed in a developed country in the twenty-first century. Why do people send their children there? Education and indoctrination can never be the same thing.

I find this censorship less offensive than what goes on at North American universities all the time where any and all opinions not on the left get silenced, sometimes by outright violence. So much for schools being a place to expand your mind. At least these weirdos let you see that the painting itself exists.

The really sad thing is that this American censorship is hitting us WORLDWIDE due to American tech companies shoving their censorship-standards down the throats of a worldwide audience. Even this famous/award winning/iconic Vietnam photograph was taken down from Facebook because of a nudity violation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phan_Thi_Kim_Phuc Another very sad consequence = this American-censorship-trait will unfortunately shape a large part of social media users. As many of them are utterly addicted to to their mobile phones & will simply "influenced away" from what is perceived as normal in the country they are actually living in.

This happens right here in the UK, too, but most people don't even know. This is what textbooks used by the Exclusive or Plymouth Brethren look like (they have their own schools all over the globe, the organisation behind those schools is called ‘Focus’.) Not only do they censor pictures, but ‘bad’ words, too. It’s all done by hand by one designated parent with a big black marker. All you need to do here is register as a faith school and all of a sudden you get away with almost anything.

This is the problem with religion no matter what you practice/believe. How do you justify taking the words of long-since dead men, which were written thousands of years ago, at face value! How can you not question the source?! Most people can't even agree on things that happened a few days ago but you're going to take the words written in a book that has been translated into every language to mean the same thing....across the board....as if there could never be mistakes? C'mon that's just crazy!! Humans don't work like that--Then somehow you get to twist those words any time to fit whatever narrative suits you or an agenda? NO F**k that! In terms of art history, many original artists continually strove to evolve boldly and creatively, (e.g.Renaissance and onwards), but in the end, it is all about how "Art" is actually used, and for what purpose. To censor something like the above appears artistically insulting but, at the same time, much of the purpose of imagery was a form of propaganda clearly directed at illiterates and then the generally indoctrinated in the first place. Why, in these times, are we still so naive?

You might be interested to learn that, although Michelangelo covered the Sistine Chapel with nude figures, lots of veils were added later by order of various popes, up and until Pius XI in the XXth century. Pensacola Christian College is a school to avoid like the plague then. Extreme censorship inhibits human learning. Colleges exist to teach and expand students' experiences and knowledge of the world around them. This one, serves only to curtail it. Such extremism should be be banned by legislation.

California chiming in. The DeYoung does not have defaced/censored paintings. I don't remember art books censored in my H.S. library, and I am old. This might be a regional thing, certain States, or local venues. Hard to believe legislatures would condone this level of ignorance, except maybe in Texas where their textbooks, sold all over the country, omit any reference to Evolution. This might have changed since my daughter was in school. She went to a French school in S.F.; the school was required to buy American books and to pass tests based on those. The school covered the English two afternoons/week. The kids aced their English tests. When my daughter started UC, she coasted through some classes where the subject matter had been covered in 7th and 8th grade classes. The school's books and curriculum came from France where youngsters prepared for their Bacs before leaving grammar school. Germany is the same. Countries track non-academically qualified into tech schools.

Just for the record - Pensacola is an ultra-conservative and legalistic Christian college. I went to a Christian university (SBC affiliated) for undergrad, and though they were fairly conservative it was nothing compared to schools like Pensacola. Though "baptist" in that they believe in believer's baptism (as opposed to infant baptism) they are in no way related to the SBC nor the majority of baptist churches you've probably seen. For a similar comparison their flavor of Christianity would be comparable to ultra-orthodox Jews and Muslims and their guidelines for modesty.

Is it such a bad thing that people do this? Most of us Christians wouldn't give a second thought to paintings like this in their original form. But for some this is just a way of life. What does God really think about this? I think that he views these beliefs as a way these people want to love God and he's ok with that. But I don't think he demands that from everyone. I think he wants those people to live by the rules they've made to love him. For others we make different rules that God views the same way. He holds us to the rules we make for ourselves that are glorifying to Him.

I'm not too sure all is quite as drastic as it seems. There are smaller rectangular (black tape?) marks under some of the crude felt tip covering up. Was that put in later to make a point? The smaller marks are bad enough and I condemn any form of censorship, be it small or crude felt tip pen splodges and the College should be heavily criticised and made to change.

It all has to do with 'unpure' thought...the times have changed since these works of art were painted, culminating in the Victorian era, and repeated in the 1950s....some religions take the 'unpure' thoughts to a new level...look at the Muslim religion...everyone is up in arms about this church's approach, yet gladly 'accept' that women must cover up *even their HAIR !* , in the Muslim religion, lest it provide *temptation* to men. That's what I find unacceptable...*accept* all religions interpretations, or none. Don't pick and choose because one is the religion of the day.

Everyone? No. I’m not accepting of the control of women, nor do I accept any religion. Dude, there’s no protection of Islam. There is protection of Muslims who are being persecuted for being Muslim. There’s a big-a*s difference between promoting a religion and defending people’s right to practice it. Persecution over religious choice is illegal in the USA. Religious freedom is literally a founding feature of the country. The problem is that the nutbag conservative xtians think that the only acceptable religion is their own. They would turn the USA into a theocracy if they could.

Don’t lie when the evidence of your lie is still available for people to see. You straight up thought that the person who was against the school did this to make a point, not that the school itself did it. You can admit to being wrong or confused, it makes you seem smarter than holding on to an obvious lie.

And then using Sharpie on a book to censor art is okay? Where does it stop?

Actually, Michelangelo's real artwork was only discovered during the great restoration which took place between 1981 and 1992. This shows that some Catholics are/were no better than any of those bizarre cults mentioned below...

This post is discriminating Christians and the beliefs they have. "But quote hilarious for us, as we see the length that some Christians will go to maintain their ideological 'purity.' But if it were against Muslims or Catholic beliefs everyone would be raging. Is there something wrong with a person who wishes to save themselves for marriage? NO. I believe a person in college should be mature enough to see the art. Christians highly discourage premarital sex. They also don't want that subject to be thought of. This might be the reasoning behind the censored material... type of art

It reminds me of the latest situation in Poland, where the director of the National Museum in Warsaw removed works of Natala L.L and Katarzyna Kozyra (which works are an example of polish critical art of 70' and '80s) because "they were demoralizing kids and youth". And the funniest ist fact, that he did it the day before The Day of Free Art... Unfortunately, it isn't the first act of censoring polish culture and art since PiS won elections...

I find it interesting that almost all the commenters on here are really irate about this censorship, yet show only a small fraction of that same incredulousness when it comes to the constant silencing/censoring of (un-extreme) viewpoints at mainstream universities all over North America. I don't see any difference.

Don’t lie when the evidence of your lie is still available for people to see. You straight up thought that the person who was against the school did this to make a point, not that the school itself did it. You can admit to being wrong or confused, it makes you seem smarter than holding on to an obvious lie.
