Vilnius Airport Puts A Christmas Tree Made Of Confiscated Items To Highlight The Importance Of Aviation Security

Here at Lithuanian Airports, we are certain that you have seen many different Christmas trees: natural, modern, innovative, and simply quirky. However, we can guarantee – you’ve never seen anything like this one.

With the winter travel season well underway, the Aviation security officers at Vilnius Airport opted for an unusual take on the classic Christmas tree, aiming to send an educational message on the importance of aviation security. Using items that are prohibited to carry in hand luggage and which were taken away from passengers during screening, the lads at the Aviation security unit of Lithuania’s main airport created a truly unique educational masterpiece.

Knives, scissors, lighters, blades, and all sorts of other dangerous goods – this Christmas tree has them all. So if you don’t want your personal, yet prohibited, belonging to land on our next year’s Christmas tree – better check out the baggage requirements before you pack for your next flight.

More info: 15min.lt | ltou.lt

Take a a closer look – now you will remember what not to take on the plane!

I think these Christmas trees are made from purchased scissors to prove a point (no pun intended). They all look the same and have green handles. Also, I've had scissors in my backpack and forgot about them - a few times. So yes, I've had to hand them over at TSA. I'm an artist and scissors are very useful on a daily basis, so they're with me all the time... Now, my packing list includes items to uNpAcK before I get started.

Does that knife have blood on it? Perhaps this one should be in an evidence bag? Screen-Sho...505fa7.png Screen-Shot-2019-12-10-at-50516-PM-5df016b505fa7.png

Reading all these comments... Some people have no idea about airport security and why certain items are considered a security risk and are confiscated. It is about saving everybody's a*s!

Once the airport security took my wire cutter. It had about one centimeter long blade. Next to it were plastic lighter gas recharger, magnesium enhanced wick and matches.

My favorite exchange with the TSA guys was just making casual conversation while waiting for my son and he told me they had a big garbage can in the back full of sledgehammers and crowbars. Seriously!?

Oof this summer I traveled to Europe and accidentally forgot to take my scissors out of my art supplies case. The scary thing is that they did not catch it in US security. They caught it in Germany on a layover. 😬 They were quite long, too.

I think I remember travelers outside the U.S. frequently have to give up certain items when they end up on the U.S. bound leg, like lighters and small blades and such.

How stupid. Cheese knives.... really. I understand that of course they COULD be used as weapons.... BUT 99% of the people who carry cheese knives are not gonna try to cut somebody with them. This just shows how ridiculous the world is now. I understand terrorism and all that, but this just shows, to me anyway, going WAY to far on "security". BOO, I say.

It's the 1% that will ruin it for all the others forever and ever. Also, Imagine you were seated next to the ONE person who had ill intentions with a cheese knife... you'd be glad they took it away wouldn't you?

In some instances, it highlights the ridiculousness of airline "security". A blunt toy shovel? An obvious plastic toy water gun? Really?

Ok, here goes. USA officials do not operate in Lithuania, so the TSA has not confiscated the cardboard gun. Also, the tree is in Lithuania, where one can't just leave real guns lying around, ergo, it is a place holder for a real gun (notice the real bullet hanging from it?) Did I manage to change your mind?

Prohibited items, I see. Prohibited items taken from passengers, I'm not buying. There's no way people are only carrying green scissors, and every confiscated cheese knife is of the exact same shape.

If you take a moment to look more closely, the scissors have been spray-painted (some better than others) to create a uniform tree-like background...
