Some people, when receiving generous help with their everyday problems by strangers, choose to push for more instead of showing some of the deserved gratitude. And these people, my friend, are just the worst. While some of the helpers decided to kill them with kindness, others delivered the best comebacks for the ungrateful.

My local food pantry stretches to help people out, and recipients are so grateful!! Also, most of this OP's items are shelf stable, non refrigerated. If her she has a child 5 or younger, and can VERIFY that she QUALIFIES, she gets WIC (Women, Infant, Children), which would provide milk, formula, juice, cereal, dry beans or peanut butter. Also, JUICE is a HORRIBLE beverage for regular use--very high in fructose, without the filling fiber and other nutrients of actual WHOLE FRUIT!!!
Ok, let's break down the costs here, as best as I can guess: Turkey, at $2 a lb, assuming that's a 10 lb turkey (it looks pretty small), $20. Loaf of bread, $2, two boxes of stuffing, $6, bag of oranges, $3, bag of apples, $3, bag of carrots, $2, can of cranberries, $1.50, can of green beans, $1, bag of potatoes, $2, box of chocolates, $3, box of cookies, $2. Total $45.50. That's for one family. Can safely assume that each food bank helps several hundred families, and if they give each family the same thing, that quickly adds up. Idiots should stop and think before posting their nonsense all over the internet.

If you need help, especially during the holidays, find a food bank. Reach out to your local churches. A lot of churches host a Thanksgiving/Christmas dinner and all are free to come. For the food boxes, you usually don't have to provide proof of income, you just fill out a short form to apply. You don't have to be a member, you don't even have to be a church-goer. I'm agnostic, but I see no reason to tell them that. They always pray with everyone before we leave and I let them ( It's the thought that counts). I have gotten food in the past when, technically, I made too much money to qualify for assistance. But I had bills pilling up and I just needed a bit of food to get through the month. I know what it's like to struggle. We could all use a little help from time to time.

THis one made me livid. I lived in poverty asa kid. We had no food bank. That much food was for a family of four for a *month* in my childhood household. But hey, by all means, lady, complain you didn't get butter or juice. *eyeroll*
You got a flipping box of chocolates?! And you're pissed about juice?! My food bank doesn't give out chocolate like that. If yours is anything like mine, you don't get juice in Christmas or Thanksgiving boxes. You know what beverage we got in our Thanksgiving box? Milk! Granted, we did get butter but it all depends on what people donate. Butter is expensive. And it's pretty random what goes into those boxes. Our free dessert was key lime pie which isn't very fall like for the Pacific Northwest but hey, it was free! Be grateful for what you get. And you don't have to accept everything. I often pass on the table of mostly wilted lettuce. And if any food bank gives out actually fresh veggies, it's not in my neighborhood.
Don’t know if this will help, but soaking wilted lettuce in ice water will often crisp it back up again. Good luck!

My mum volunteers at a food pantry, and the stories she tells me about these ungrateful people would curl your hair. Thank goodness they are only a small percentage of the people who come in - but... wow.

Not a bad amount of food, I also assume that even if you need to use the food bank you can pay a couple bucks for a improvement on a holiday dinner. If not you check out other banks and count your blessings. I’m not trying to be accusatory or mean but you seem to have some decent furniture so I think you can spare a few bucks, I get needing a food bank but you can probably still spend a spare less than ten bucks on a special meal.
When I worked at a Community Action Center we had a guy in avery late model lincoln come in and try to take all the cakes. We had a two bag limit. I coodinated legal aid, but sat behind the receptionist who always made him put some back. Zero f*****g shame.

This is a lovely dinner. No need for juice or butter, you can add a splash of juice from the apples or oranges to a glass of water and I don't think butter is necessary here.
That's more than the standard pre-approved bags the government gives pantries to distribute. Those are name brand goods. And someone has personal internet access. Time to redistribute to a more "in need" family.

If i was ever in a position where i relied on the support of a foodbank to feed my Child/family, I would be blessed with just a loaf of bread and some baked beans - Turkeys in the UK at xmas time are ridiculously expensive, i would probably cry to have received these items! How fantastic that a charity will try and source you a "traditional" style package for an xmas day feast, that will probably stretch a few days! what an ungrateful wretch. ps, if your kids are thirsty, give them water, b***h.

I volunteer at food banks when I have the time. This looks like an awesome spread to me. The supplies usually involve more canned goods vs fresh/frozen foods, but Thanksgiving and Christmas boxes usually contain a ham or turkey, and some fresh produce. I've never had anyone complain and the few people who do have dietary restrictions (allergies, diabetes, etc.) are always shy and embarrassed when they ask if they can have another can of green beans instead of the bread (or something like that). I volunteer because most people are grateful and it makes me feel good to help. That, and the food bank usually gives me the really odd extras after we close up. "We got three jars of capers in the pickup. What are those?" "I have no idea. Give them to Liz." Lol.

I had a similar experience like this on eBay--I was selling 3 brand new, still-in-package sets of Hello Kitty lights (on strings, like for Christmas or around your room), and some lady begged me to knock down my price and hold them for her until she had the money so she could buy them for her daughter's birthday party. I agreed, but she kept stalling and stalling, and I told her if somone wanted them for the full price AND PAID FOR THEM, I was going to sell them to the other person. Well, that's what happened, and of course, *I* was the bad guy for ruining her daughter's birthday party, because she PROMISED her daughter she'd have them. Maybe I'm wrong, but I have a hard time feeling bad about this.

I get so tired of seeing all the parents begging and using their kids to try and get free stuff. If you can't afford it, little johnny might as well learn early that they aren't going to get everything they want
I was living in the US and used to see a lot of veterans at intersections holding cardboard signs asking for money or means to go on with their lives. I always felt so deeply sorry that they had to endure a war, literally having their lives on the line. One day I found a guy who looked older. I pulled down my window and handed him a $20 and said "Thank you for your service, God bless you". He faltered. Looked me in the eyes, but accepted. No 'Thank you'. As soon as the light went green, he banged on the side of my car 3 times and yelled "Go away! You're stealing our jobs!". I was shocked. I had been relocated from my country to the US *by the North American company* where I used to work because my specific skills were a fit for the position. I was not 'stealing' anyone's job. I feel so sorry that Veterans have to go through this, after all they have endured. They should have proper social and health care. His rage was not against *me*. It was against the lack of dignity he deserved.
Unfortunately, some of these panhandlers are dealing with mental illness. I've seen them fighting over who gets what corner to beg from. They can be angry at life or just whatever.

The man is able bodied, so I offered to help if he would agree to help me paint my house. He signed a contract that detailed hourly rate & all. He worked off about half the money I gave him in advance. Then he skipped town without a phone call, an offer to pay at a later date when he was back on his feet, or an apology. The jerk had the nerve to call me up ten years later saying he was moving back in town. He said he needed a place to stay. He said he needed money to rent a storefront and open a business he wanted to start. Hmmm...He didn't ask for help, he just told me his needs. I was supposed to leap to the rescue of the poor dear. This guy only expects the best out of his friends. Funny how he won't give so much as a phone call in return. I told him to give me a call when he was settled in, and we could go for coffee ...
Once I stepped in at the last minute to teach a cooking class when the regular instructor was stuck in traffic. When he thanked me I made the mistake of saying "no problem!" which he interpreted as "no need to pay me!" 4 hours I will never get back
I truly appreciate the polite and civil answers given by the advertisers/posters to these "choosy beggars". Especially after reading the beggars' responses when their wishes were denied! I would have to put such a rein on my "sarcasm stallion" he'd flip over! Personally, I don't give change nor supplies to pan handlers. I have seen them get picked up and dropped off at prime off-ramp locations by white vans to believe that they have no support systems. However, I do give money to the local advocacy and support groups for the homeless and donate food to the pantries and food drives on a regular basis. The person complaining about the food handed out by the local pantry not meeting their particular tastes was especially galling. I cannot bring myself to feel sorry for these people, I just pity them.
Yeah, I advertised 5 free boxes of fabric scraps for quilting. Had a second person show up after I gave away the first five, and I put together 3 more boxes for her and she complained because I "wasted" her time!
Some people just don't understand gratitude. The world does not owe you a living - the world was here first. You want a living, work for one. However, if you are down and out because you had a run of sh***y luck, I don't mind lending a helping hand.

On a reverse of this, I made a relative a necklace as a gift and someone asked her where she got it. She told them it was handmade and they asked her if I would make one for them, they would pay $50 for it. Without even asking me she told them no because I am too busy to sell my crafts, it's just a hobby. It is just a hobby, and her piece was the first one I made, but shouldn't it be my choice who I make items for?

Recently, when moving, I listed a bunch of stuff to give out for FREE (receiving end to pay shipping, but I still have to pack them and ship them out), including $200+ handbags and $500+ home appliances, all in good condition. I could just donate them to charity, but I would like friends and acquaintances to enjoy them, because I sure did when I had them! I also listed them on some message boards, offering them to strangers. In the end, not one of those "friends" who took my stuff even sent a "thank you" message after receiving the items, while the complete strangers took their time to thank me and tell me the stuff are useful to them...
We are just about to move and have put some stuff we don't want for very low prices online. I was selling a school bag at half the price it was bought for, almost perfect condition. A woman asked for it for $4 and said that was ok, because frankly, I prefer not to waste things. Then the lady said I had to bring it to her....to catch public transport to her location would have cost $2 and taken an hour return. Thank you but no thank you.

It's actually not something I'm used to seeing, especially the online convos(I might be wrong but I think this kind of sh*t is less widespread here because people on the whole have lower life standards and are usually more grateful for what they do have/get) so that was a very entertaining read. It makes me wonder...are those like op unique cases or is this actually a common kind of attitude? This whole attitude...it's like very very infantile and it seems that's becoming a common thing in modern adults, especially in developed countries. With the coddling to kids' whims, with whole 'you can be whatever you want and do whatever you like'(yes, but there are certain limits to this...), with generous social support...to an extent all these things are great and much needed, but is this actually what we are getting on the big scale? A generation littered with people who want the world to comply to their every whim, adults with mentality of 5 year olds? That's alarming...
It's a common attitude, just not quite on this scale all the time. People complaining about getting the wrong gift, wanting a specific free coupon, complaining about free content not being as they expect, things like that.

I truly appreciate the polite and civil answers given by the advertisers/posters to these "choosy beggars". Especially after reading the beggars' responses when their wishes were denied! I would have to put such a rein on my "sarcasm stallion" he'd flip over! Personally, I don't give change nor supplies to pan handlers. I have seen them get picked up and dropped off at prime off-ramp locations by white vans to believe that they have no support systems. However, I do give money to the local advocacy and support groups for the homeless and donate food to the pantries and food drives on a regular basis. The person complaining about the food handed out by the local pantry not meeting their particular tastes was especially galling. I cannot bring myself to feel sorry for these people, I just pity them.
Yeah, I advertised 5 free boxes of fabric scraps for quilting. Had a second person show up after I gave away the first five, and I put together 3 more boxes for her and she complained because I "wasted" her time!
Some people just don't understand gratitude. The world does not owe you a living - the world was here first. You want a living, work for one. However, if you are down and out because you had a run of sh***y luck, I don't mind lending a helping hand.

On a reverse of this, I made a relative a necklace as a gift and someone asked her where she got it. She told them it was handmade and they asked her if I would make one for them, they would pay $50 for it. Without even asking me she told them no because I am too busy to sell my crafts, it's just a hobby. It is just a hobby, and her piece was the first one I made, but shouldn't it be my choice who I make items for?

Recently, when moving, I listed a bunch of stuff to give out for FREE (receiving end to pay shipping, but I still have to pack them and ship them out), including $200+ handbags and $500+ home appliances, all in good condition. I could just donate them to charity, but I would like friends and acquaintances to enjoy them, because I sure did when I had them! I also listed them on some message boards, offering them to strangers. In the end, not one of those "friends" who took my stuff even sent a "thank you" message after receiving the items, while the complete strangers took their time to thank me and tell me the stuff are useful to them...
We are just about to move and have put some stuff we don't want for very low prices online. I was selling a school bag at half the price it was bought for, almost perfect condition. A woman asked for it for $4 and said that was ok, because frankly, I prefer not to waste things. Then the lady said I had to bring it to her....to catch public transport to her location would have cost $2 and taken an hour return. Thank you but no thank you.

It's actually not something I'm used to seeing, especially the online convos(I might be wrong but I think this kind of sh*t is less widespread here because people on the whole have lower life standards and are usually more grateful for what they do have/get) so that was a very entertaining read. It makes me wonder...are those like op unique cases or is this actually a common kind of attitude? This whole attitude...it's like very very infantile and it seems that's becoming a common thing in modern adults, especially in developed countries. With the coddling to kids' whims, with whole 'you can be whatever you want and do whatever you like'(yes, but there are certain limits to this...), with generous social support...to an extent all these things are great and much needed, but is this actually what we are getting on the big scale? A generation littered with people who want the world to comply to their every whim, adults with mentality of 5 year olds? That's alarming...
It's a common attitude, just not quite on this scale all the time. People complaining about getting the wrong gift, wanting a specific free coupon, complaining about free content not being as they expect, things like that.
