Time and again we have written about choosing beggars, the kind of people who feel like the whole world revolves around them. Not only do they act entitled, but they go into a full breakdown if someone refuses to fulfill their unfair expectations. To see what I mean, scroll through our previous posts with blood-boiling examples of choosing beggars here, here and here.

But luckily the world is built on karma, and if there’s darkness there must be light too. Just like this corner of Reddit titled “Choosing Givers” which is basically an antidote to the previously mentioned notorious subreddit. Choosing Givers is thoroughly dedicated to good-hearted, selfless people who make this world go round and remind us that whatever happens, we still gotta believe in humanity.

When you scroll through this list, you can’t help but wonder what exactly drives these selfless acts and behaviors. Are some people born altruists, or is it something they acquire throughout their lives? After all, humans have a notorious reputation for being selfish creatures who put their own needs ahead of everyone else's.

According to researchers, altruism involves helping others at a cost to the self, not only when such behavior is supported by strategic considerations like reciprocity or cooperation, but even in the absence of expectation for future benefit. In other words, people who choose to do something good for others don’t necessarily expect anything good back from them.

This illuminating study suggested that each altruist act is a choice just like any other, with pros, cons, and even the occasional mistake. The authors of the study found that generous choices took more time to make than selfish ones, especially for those who made more selfish choices overall, consistent with their decision-making model. Interestingly, about half of the generous choices participants made appeared to be mistakes.

This is a lovely story, but is it typical in the US for companies to expect employees to pay for their own PPE? In the UK companies are legally obliged by health and safety regulations to provided any and all PPE.

A Text From Our Landlords This Morning

eucalypocalypse Report

In reality, the strength of good-hearted people who don’t expect anything back has to do with their sense of compassion. And compassion starts with empathy — imagining putting ourselves in the mind of another person and imagining what they’re going through. Once we’ve empathized, and feel their suffering, the second half of compassion is wanting to end that suffering. This is when good-hearted actions may occur.

But most importantly, in order to make a compassionate move, a person has to get themselves out of the way and to think of the other person. On the other hand, it’s been suggested that compassionate behavior may be appealing for people because it reduces the feelings of guilt from their privilege and good fortune.

This happened to me once. When I was a college student, one neighbor approached me to teach her middle school daughter math and physics. They fixed the price and it was OK with me. As time passed by, other neighbors approached me to teach their kids. I asked for the same fee. One of the parents thought it was low, but I'm not really a professional (those existed in the neighborhood), so that was fair from my point of view. The first month went on, and the parents noted what I did with their kids, and when the first pay time came there was a little extra in the envelope (It was during the 90s, no Venmo at that time!) I was so thankful (remember I was a student) :)

The national minimum wage in Australia is $20.30 per hour for full-time work (38 hours per week.) That's $14.66 US. Penalty rates apply for overtime, weekends, public holidays, etc. An 18 year-old working at Mcdonalds gets equivalent of $12.44 USA minimum. Casual rates are higher, so $9 an hour in the USA explains why very few people in Australia need to work at more than one job. Covid-19 has caused such a shortage of cheaper overseas labour that many businesses and farmers are forced to pay better wages to casual workers. Some cannot get workers at all. Covid-19 has forced businesses to recognise the value of their workers, as many Australians are re-assessing their work choices and lifestyles.

Oh shut up, stop selling your labor so cheaply. You're undermining other workers who actually need the money. $9 is starvation wages.

I have actually done something similar with a client. I had a string of truly horrible clients that needed websites and they nickeled and dimed me to death and were demanding, unprepared, the works. I was so pissed and disillusioned. Then this wonderful woman, pushing a good cause contacted me and told me her budget. It was larger than the website would cost in my estimation, as it was pretty simple and she had done a lot of the work already. So I made the website, she was happy and she went to pay me. I had held out on telling her because funny things happen when you give out your labor for free, but when she asked for the invoice, I told her it was on the house. The only argument we ever had was about that. She wanted to pay, I had to negotiate some token payment or she was going to show up at my door with cash and put it in the mailbox. Weirdest thing ever.

This sounds like someone doing yard work for a neighbor and not an actual employment interview. The travel/purchasing seems, to me, to be for picking up materials like mulch or paint.

My old grandma used to say 'Giving of oneself is greater than giving money'. As a little girl, she grew up in poverty and used to get up before dawn to go check the street gutters for lost coins from the night before. I think what she meant was that you didn't have to be rich to help people less fortunate than yourself. No amount of money ever bought a second of time.

Lol being a cheap and redneck farmer all I can think of is the time I spent in a crawlspace dressed in plastic bags and ski goggles to sedate and remove a skunk. You definitely go nose blind on the smell and even covered in plastic bags I still smelled like skunk for about a month afterwards. The skunk was fine and released about an hour away from my house (farm at the time). Still laugh at myself for this. I looked ridiculous.
