Time and again we have written about choosing beggars, the kind of people who feel like the whole world revolves around them. Not only do they act entitled, but they go into a full breakdown if someone refuses to fulfill their unfair expectations. After all, humans have a notorious reputation for being selfish creatures who put their own needs ahead of everyone else's.

Oh my. It gives me hope for the future that there are people like this.
In reality, the strength of good-hearted people who don’t expect anything back has to do with their sense of compassion. And compassion starts with empathy — imagining putting ourselves in the mind of another person and imagining what they’re going through. Once we’ve empathized, and feel their suffering, the second half of compassion is wanting to end that suffering. This is when good-hearted actions may occur.
But most importantly, in order to make a compassionate move, a person has to get themselves out of the way and to think of the other person. On the other hand, it’s been suggested that compassionate behavior may be appealing for people because it reduces the feelings of guilt from their privilege and good fortune.

This happened to me once. When I was a college student, one neighbor approached me to teach her middle school daughter math and physics. They fixed the price and it was OK with me. As time passed by, other neighbors approached me to teach their kids. I asked for the same fee. One of the parents thought it was low, but I'm not really a professional (those existed in the neighborhood), so that was fair from my point of view. The first month went on, and the parents noted what I did with their kids, and when the first pay time came there was a little extra in the envelope (It was during the 90s, no Venmo at that time!) I was so thankful (remember I was a student) :)

I have actually done something similar with a client. I had a string of truly horrible clients that needed websites and they nickeled and dimed me to death and were demanding, unprepared, the works. I was so pissed and disillusioned. Then this wonderful woman, pushing a good cause contacted me and told me her budget. It was larger than the website would cost in my estimation, as it was pretty simple and she had done a lot of the work already. So I made the website, she was happy and she went to pay me. I had held out on telling her because funny things happen when you give out your labor for free, but when she asked for the invoice, I told her it was on the house. The only argument we ever had was about that. She wanted to pay, I had to negotiate some token payment or she was going to show up at my door with cash and put it in the mailbox. Weirdest thing ever.

Lol being a cheap and redneck farmer all I can think of is the time I spent in a crawlspace dressed in plastic bags and ski goggles to sedate and remove a skunk. You definitely go nose blind on the smell and even covered in plastic bags I still smelled like skunk for about a month afterwards. The skunk was fine and released about an hour away from my house (farm at the time). Still laugh at myself for this. I looked ridiculous.

In November, the area I live in was hit badly by a storm - thousands of trees down. In the village where I live, a lovely man with a chainsaw offered to come around and help clear any trees that were causing issues - he came around ours as we had a large tree fall and completely block our elderly neighbours driveway (thankfully missing his house!). He spent nearly three hours (with my husbands help, clearing away a massive conifer tree so that the access to my neighbour was clear. He spent all day going around the village asking people if they needed help with tree clearance and even did it the weekend after! As far as I know, he didn't receive a penny for this - we offered him several times to pay! He was the village MVP!!
That's awesome! We had similar happen after Hurricane Charley hit us. Guys came around with chainsaws and cleared the roads and helped us get the big trees off our homes and yards. It was amazing! Thank you to those people who helped us after the storm! People came from all over to help, they brought food and water. The red cross drove through neighborhoods handing out MRE's. And all of our neighbors helped each other out. My husband would fire up the generator each morning to make a big pot of coffee and go door to door to bring hot coffee to the neighbors.

Took my car to my usual mechanic ( fab guy) for a look at an issue I had with the car. Go to pick up the car and he says " couldn't find anything wrong and it seems to have correct itself whatever it was". Asked how much I owed him. " no charge. when there's something really wrong with it I'll charge you". Where do you find someone who's time is not valuable ? I brought him a lemon pie and oddly enough it was his favourite - lol
Once when we were moving in to a new apartment (one of those deals where they split a house into an upstairs and downstairs apartment), we’re struggling - my mom in her 50s, me 17 and small, my sister was 22? This group of guys were doing lawn care a few houses down. They come over, half of them don’t seem to speak English, the apparent leader has broken English, he asks if we need help. Eventually we’re like “yeah, sure” so this team of 6 Hispanic landscapers moved all of our furniture in, up the stairs into the apartment, along with boxes and stuff. They finish and my mom offers them money. We didn’t have a lot, it was basically everything in her wallet. The lead guy refuses. Mom is like “please take it, you helped out so much. Buy your guys some pizza.” The guy refuses again. Finally my mom suggest donating it to his church and then the guys are all like “Oh, yeah, okay.” We never saw them again. I hope they’re all doing well. It was very kind.
A lot of these relate to money, but it's possible to be kind and help someone with your time as well.
Yep. I've trained about 5 guys on IT - programming, system administration, etc., for free. Also bought them lunch. It's important to share your skills, not just your money. Teach a person to fish, and all that.

I had €40 in my pockets (all i could miss at that time) and bought some great quality chisels next to the plane. I showed him some pictures of my creations and told about the course. When i arrived home this man called me: "I want my tools to be in good hands, i leave the advertisements open for another two weeks, you get what's left for free. Please give me a call... Two weeks later my car was loaded to the max with all kinds of tools, nails, screws, screwdrivers, planes, sanding machines, glue, clamps etc. Estimated new worth €5000…

A young man that i didnt know came out from the student house on the other side of the street with a blanket and said he saw us from his window and thought we needed help. It could be a really dangerous situation but i was tired and scared my son would get cold so i decided to trust him. He gave me food and his bed for the night for me and my son (he slept on the sofa). In a tiny student apartment. I called for help to get in to our apartment the next day but that restored my faith in humanity and that some people still just want to help. No hidden agenda - just for the sake of being a good fellow human. I'm forever grateful and will pass it on. Just like the people here!
Paying It Forward is an enjoyable and properly decent thing to do. You don’t have to make big gestures, it can be a smile for the senior citizen outside the supermarket, you can buy a coffee for a stranger, heading through a toll booth? Pay for the car behind. You’ll be met with smiles. Do it, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the response.

I'm working on getting a friend a gift. It involves getting something 3D printed. I was having terrible luck with my searches and finally found someone who prints things on Etsy. I said I knew I didn't have the right file type and explained how I was trying to work on getting a gift for my friend but I wasn't familiar with all the terms so I wasn't having much luck at all. They not only were very kind about my questioning of things, they provided me with a link to a place where I could possibly get someone to make me my image in the file type needed, which led me to another awesome person who is not only incredibly kind and made me feel good about the things I was getting done, but because I was giving him a bunch of time and had several things that needed to be done, he gave me a deal! I'm planning on going back to the person who helped me so much to get them printed when they are ready! They did all this, helping me with terms and such without any guarantee that this would go beyond
