Babysitter Shares A Text Exchange With Parents Who Were Looking For Someone To Exploit As Cheap Labor

Kids are adorable, fun, and downright cute. That’s what most people think and it’s easy to see why. However, babysitting them is by no means an easy task. In fact, taking care of kids is something akin to handling teenagers: their mood changes like the wind changes direction, they’re hungry all the time, and their sleeping patterns are somewhat erratic.

So it’s no wonder that babysitters want to be paid a decent hourly wage for looking after someone else’s children. Even if that ‘someone’ thinks that their children are extremely well behaved and that the babysitter would have to simply spend the entire day eating chocolate chip and peanut butter ice-cream (yum!), playing with LEGOs (fun!), watching Mexican soap operas on TV, and relaxing.

Something like that happened to one person (let’s call her ‘Alice’) who was shamed by a mom for ‘daring’ to ask for 15 dollars per hour. According to the mom (shall we call her ‘Betty’?), such a price was way too steep for taking care of her ‘well-behaved’ kids who’d be sleeping most of the time. Fortunately, the babysitter had enough sense to stand her ground and not give in.

A babysitter stood her ground after being shamed by a mom

In ‘Betty’s’ opinion, ‘Alice’ shouldn’t have been asking for such a ‘steep’ price because her 3 kids are well-behaved (even though they’re not potty-trained) and would’ve been sleeping most of the time anyway. Betty thought that 8 dollars per hour would be enough. Betty was wrong.

‘Alice’ wasn’t planning on giving in to emotional blackmail and showed that her pride and dignity were worth more than a few measly bucks.

Being a great babysitter is more than just about showing up. Healthline provides some helpful tips for babysitters when they have to deal with both parents and kids. For example, babysitters shouldn’t have to figure out every detail by themselves: if you have any issues or questions, call up the parents and ask. Nobody expects you to be an omniscient mind-reading savant the first day on the job. If you can’t calm a kid down, it might have nothing to do with you and everything to do with them losing their favorite plushie. But you need to know about the toy in order to look for it.

Furthermore, in case anything bad happens [knocks on wood], it’s best to keep a handy list of emergency contacts, from poison control to other family members’ phone numbers. Also, be sure to mind any allergies the toddlers might have. A good babysitter keeps the kids alive, while a great babysitter actively engages them and helps them grow into awesome people, instead of plonking them down on the couch in front of the screen.

So, dear Pandas, do you think ‘Alice’ did the right thing by refusing to work for 8 dollars per hour? Would have refused as well? How else would you have dealt with a parent who was shaming you? Do you have any interesting babysitting stories to tell us? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments!

Here’s how people reacted to the story posted online. Some even shared stories of their own

If they have the money to go out, they must have the money to pay properly their babysitter.

How are you sure about this? What is it's a mandatory office party? What id they go and visit some friends? What if someone was in trouble and they had to visit him/her? I mean...HOW DO YOU KNOW what is the situation?

Sure, I will babysit for the bare minimum and I will do the bare minimum. Only the absolute basics to make sure your kids go to bed alive. They can go a night without being fed, changed, entertained etc. Is that a deal?

Yes, I've babysat exactly once. Baby stayed asleep the whole time. I got a job in the school kitchen instead of babysitting - there are just a hundred ways things could go bad.

1975. Babysitting was $1 per hour. Minimum wage was $2. Babysitting was half of minimum wage. 1990's when we hired sitters, most wanted minimum wage. Seemed reasonable. Sitters had fun and asked to come back. STILL, as fun as it was, there are many things they would prefer to be doing. This was a commitment, a high level of responsibility, and I paid for what I expected.

I'll admit, my son wasn't potty trained till he was 4, BUT, he's also on the autism spectrum. It IS possible these twins have some similar situation, though the way the mom is talking I'm thinking the likelihood of that is very slim.

That's not really the point though, is it? I mean, if they're on the spectrum and are therefore more difficult to take care of, shouldn't she be paid more?

This just seems to be more of the same as paying our teachers such stinking low salaries. "My kids are good, they'll just be sitting there in class, why should we pay you a living wage!" AARRGGHH.

10 years ago when I was in high school I babysat for $10/hr. I took a babysitting course through the local hospital when I was 11. I normally watched my cousin's kids, which I enjoyed. Somehow my neighbor found out and asked if I would watch her kids (3 of them Aged 12, 4, 3). I agreed. NEVER AGAIN. The 12 yr old didn't take her meds and tried playing with a lighter all night, the house was disgusting, no real food to be found, two fighting cats. The two younger kids were a nightmare, refused to eat, threw food everywhere. And the lady's check bounced. Now I only watch family members.

Ok. Wait a minute. So in America people ask total strangers to take care of their kids??? I've never seen this in Hungary or in the Czech Republic. People are always looking for friends, friends's friends, relatives etc. Sometimes they ask people that they don't know, but at least they have a link between them. When I was babysitting I even had to meet with the baby/babies in advance. Just to be sure they are comfortable around me, I know the place etc. So I wasn't just a scary adult that showed up when the parents were leaving. It's crazy. I would never open my door for a stranger. And I would definitely never leave my kids with one. Pricing is a secondary question to me. And not because I am wealthy, as I am not. God, this is crazy...

A lot of people in America immigrate here from elsewhere, leaving their friends and family in other countries. They have to make new friends once they get here. The babysitter here could have advertised in the local mother’s group, for example.

I have a friend who also wonders why she needs to pay her babysitter more than $10/ hour when the kids are asleep. I tell her it’s because the babysitter is spending her Saturday night alone with someone else’s kids in someone else’s house instead of doing whatever else they want to do on a Saturday night.

Uhm, I have a special needs kid that didn't fully potty train until 6. Granted, special needs, but the part that upsets me aren't the comments, but the failure to realize that some parents with kids like this DO potty train only to have it undone by someone else. (IE: my kid went to school, where they put a diaper on him since he was special needs....it took months to get him trained and all undone in one moment b/c he instantly reverted. Not once, not twice, but three separate times by the SAME SCHOOL)

I am in no way standing up for this momma because she sounds like a work of art. However my 16 year old daughter was almost 4 and a half before completely toilet trained. With that said she is on the Autism spectrum so she had trouble comprehending it as much as we tried to teach her. I litterly thought I was going to go crazy getting her to go in the toilet before Pre-K started, she didn't have a diagnosis at the time. Now for this momma if she can't afford some one decent and reputable to watch her children then she doesn't need to go out. My husband and I we young when we had our children and it surely didn't kill us not going out all the time so I could take care of our two children. We wanted them therefore it was our job to care for them. I am sorry to many people are just quick to shove their kids off onto others these days. Especially if you are going to complain about the cost. This girl was right on for standing her ground she has a lot of responsibility in her hands when she is watching others children.l

Hiring a babysitter for the evening isn't exactly "shoving them off on others". Everyone needs a break every now and then, that seems pretty harsh. I was home with my 3 boys, my eldest was 2 years older than his autistic twin brothers and I definitely needed a night off occasionally and don't think anyone should ever be made to feel guilty for feeling that way. Being home all day with children is mentally and physically draining. To say parents should never be away from their chicken is nothing short of ridiculous. And if you were liked and lived in another state from all your family a baby sitter was the only alternative if you wanted to go out for an evening.

I babysit 4 kids for 3 hours at a time and get twenty dollars, and to me that feels like enough, but that's because I'm 15. If you are booking someone on short notice, kids that aren't potty trained, AND twins, for $60, you need to sort out your priorities.

I think that parents that aren't willing to pay babysitters what they deserve are bad parents, they don't seem to care for the best interest of the child. I had one son and I admit I was slow about potty training him, but 3 1/2 he was potty trained, he may have still wore a diaper at bedtime for a while, but that only lasted a little while.

Not defending the mother in ANY way here but my second child didn't potty train until he was about 3.5. It wasn't lack of effort on our part, he was just a very stubborn, strong willed person. That started before he was even born. My first trained in 2 weeks at just over 2.

I'm a freelance graphic designer and occasionally get a snotty retort to my rates -- which are below average. I just say, "Thanks for being in contact. Let me know if you'd like for us to work together." DONE. //// A realtor once balked at my rates, saying, "I never pay more than $15/hour." I looked at the brochure she had just handed me and replied, "You're getting your money's worth."

My mother made me babysit all the time growing up, being the oldest of 7. And then farm me out to her friends for 50 cents an hour, even for 6 kids. And then take my money when I returned home. Yeah, it was GREAT...not. So no, your time is precious, if you value who's watching your kids, pay them a decent amount of money! It'll pay off in the long run! They'll WANT to babysit for you!

Murica or what? We started with € 10 a night, have been paying € 15 since her 16th birthday. Sometimes a night is 3 hours, sometimes 5. When the (2) kids have been a pain we add € 5 (happened twice in the past 8 years). She's happy with our kids, we're happy with her. She rarely has to put them in bed, only watches TV or studies. Teens with a job in a supermarket have to work much harder for much less pay! Edit: chillout about the potty training. My girl was trained by herself at 2yrs old. My boy took much much longer. Beware of the mummy police!

I am hating to hear all these judgmental comments on this woman's parenting. Some children have problems . My kids all potty trained at two very easily . My grandson who lives with us turns four this month, and he isn't potty trained. He has some developmental delays , but for the most part is on par with his peers. He was born severely premature. Twins are often premature and that can cause delays as well. There is also a difference between hiring a nanny and hiring a babysitter . In general a babysitter is used for a short amount of time , and often at night when the kids will be in bed. Also, it could be a difference in where people live . Here a medical assistant or nursing assistant gets $14 an hour. A babysitter, in the traditional sense shouldn't make that much. This one seems like an adult who is making a business out of watching children, so I'd expect to pay her more, and receive more than I would hiring a teenager. My teenager works fast food right now and makes $10 an hour

I'm fine with being judgemental on a woman who disrespectfully haggles with a babysitter. The fact that she invites her to "have a go" at potty training doesn't sound much like kids with problems, but be that as it may, it's a strong reason to add some $$ to her rate.

3 1/2 and not potty trained? Either, these are two of very few children who really gain control of their bodily functions very late. Or, given the mother's attitude, she did not care. Many three year olds will actually demand to do it likw the grown ups!

Or not. My son is 4. He strictly refuses to go to the toilet. He can do it, when he feels like it. For instance: he doesn't do anything at night and when he sits in the bath, he tells us he wants to go to the toilet so as not to do it in the water. But otherwise? He preferes the diaper. And its ok. We do not force him. I guess its a culture thing. Children in Germany have a lot more freedom, then in the US (look at our playgrounds or the fact that children walk alone to school). By the way: our doctor isn't concerned either.

I'm just going to push back on the potty training issue. There are A LOT of kids still not potty trained at 3.5 yrs. There is a lot to be annoyed about in this article, but that isn't one. I have a 3yr old and a 4 yr old and it has taken hell and high water to get them to use the potty. We even put them in daycare where they emphasize potty training and it still took my 4 year old forever to decide to do it. I'm completely over people who had an easy time potty training their kids shaming everyone else. Pound sand.

Some kids take more time. Boys tend to take a bit longer than girls. And the odd accident will continue to occur for a while. I had an 'easy' kid who trained young, and I definitely know it wasn't me - she just decided one day she wanted it . Before then, nothing worked. A week after, and it was solid. A startlingly fast cutoff, but I know neurotypical kids who trained at four or five and who just reported that they couldn't sense the signals.

the sitter had b****y responses and knew she'd be posting this even as the conversation began, if its real. "kinda short notice". Some kids are harder to potty train. And many countries don't even recognise this baysitting culture, you leave your children with some stranger, never understood it, couldn't they just scoot them over to a family member or friend? Yeah the parent shouldnt expect it for $60 but come on people, this is way overblown and clearly only for the likes. Bet she couldn't wait to write that catty response at the end.

Is this real life? Are people unironically defending these rates? I live in finland and the average worker that's worked for 10 years doesn't get 15 an hour. I don't even know whay to say. Why even get an education if you can just babysit for this amount of money?

Let me know if you'd like for us to work together." DONE. //// A realtor once balked at my rates, saying, "I never pay more than $15/hour." My mother made me babysit all the time growing up, being the oldest of 7.

All I can see is: someone revealing private text conversations when she can't get what she wants. Is this the new norm?

Is this real life? Are people unironically defending these rates? I live in finland and the average worker that's worked for 10 years doesn't get 15 an hour. I don't even know whay to say. Why even get an education if you can just babysit for this amount of money?

Are you taking into account all the factors that affect what people are paid? No. How about the cost of living for a start.
