Children Born Of Rape Pose To Show That They’re Beautiful And Can Be Loved Too
I produced this work in August 2014 in an effort to empower children born of rape and women survivors of sexual violence and to promote peace. For years, the city of Goma, in the Democratic republic of the Congo, witnessed horrific war crimes and sexual violence against children, women and sometimes men. All these people were used as a weapon of war.
In the recent years, more and more local initiatives and international programs have been developed to help survivors of domestic abuse and sexual violence during war to reintegrate to the society and take their life back in control.
In this series of pictures, you will discover the life of Esther, a little girl born of rape, going through all the big milestones of her life: her birth, her first steps, her first day at school, her wedding.
All the children you see on the pictures are born of rape…all the women have been involved in sexual abuse. They are no longer victims. They are beautiful survivors who want the world to look at them as such!

I love that hopefully they no longer consider themselves victims but survivors as it takes every atom from the tips of your toes to your very soul to come through such a violent, personal crime as rape. This it the evidence of the power of courage and love over evil and hatred.
This is so empowering to all women who are survivors. This shows how strong, beautiful and how much love they have to give. I love it!
If you look, it tells a story. All the women are in the last photo. Beautiful women. The achievements they have as survivors is beautiful. The men with them are looking at them with reverence, and love. Terrific photographic technique I have seen before with another photographer to make the photos seem unreal and painting-like.
A couple of the photos appear to have the subjects posed before a backdrop. Are they? The light seems so even in each that it appears that there are 2 flat "layers" of images. Help??
I think what you are referring to is that these are all black and white photos which have been hand-colored afterward. So, the prints themselves have been painted on, and this can have a "flattening" effect on photographs.
