“All He Had To Do Was Hand Us The Food”: Chick-Fil-A Worker Throws Away Customer’s Food For Arriving At Closing Time
If you’ve never been to a Chick-fil-A before, the experience usually goes something like this: an extremely friendly and polite employee takes your order, responding only with “my pleasure” every time you thank them, you wait no more than a few minutes for your food, and then you are served some of the freshest chicken, fries, milkshakes, lemonade, etc. that you could ever imagine at a fast food restaurant. There might also be excited children running around like at any other fast food joint, but what is crucial to know about Chick-fil-A to understand the full scope of this story is how excellent their customer service is.
Earlier this month, one customer, Trizzyxdz on TikTok, shared a video of Chick-fil-A employees who were not acting on their best behavior. The TikTok shocked many viewers who are well aware of Chick-fil-A’s customer service reputation and sparked lots of discussions in the comments. Below, you can see Trizzy’s video, as well as some of the replies it has received, and let us know what you think about this situation in the comments section. And then if you’re interested in reading another Bored Panda piece about fast food employees, look no further than right here.
One Chick-fil-A customer recently shared a video of employees refusing to give him and his friend their order because they arrived at closing time

At any other fast food chain, this story might not be as interesting. But because Chick-fil-A employees typically appear to be on a very tight leash, it is surprising that any of them would feel comfortable showing sass to their customers. We don’t know for sure what time Trizzy and his friend showed up, so it is very possible that they arrived 5 minutes after closing time. But considering how strict the rules are for Chick-fil-A employees, I would guess that throwing away a customer’s food in front of them is not allowed.
For example, male employees of the chicken empire are not allowed to have hair longer than collar length and facial hair is strictly prohibited. Employees are also expected to remove almost all jewelry “with the exception of small earrings (no dangling styles), watches, and wedding bands” and conceal their tattoos. Even after employees decide to move on from Chick-fil-A, they are required to return their uniforms “clean and pressed”. In fact, the company reserves the right to withhold a previous employee’s final paycheck if they do not comply with this rule.
And lastly, the “my pleasure” rule. Apparently in the Chick-fil-A employee handbook, there is an informal set of rules about how employees should speak and act to keep up their reputation of “2nd Mile Service”, or particularly excellent customer service. Employees are not technically required to say “my pleasure”, but it is the only explicitly stated example of “2nd Mile Service” in the handbook. It’s working though because I have never been to a Chick-fil-A where I did not hear “my pleasure” about 15 times. It’s part of the experience, and I think if I did not hear it, I would be disappointed.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on this situation down below. Are you a fan of Chick-fil-A and shocked that an employee would ever act like this, or do you assume that there must be more to the story than customers arriving on time and being denied their food? Either way, I’m sure this video will not hurt Chick-fil-A’s business in any way. People just go crazy for that chicken and the (assumed) guarantee of great service. And finally, thank you for reading; it has been my pleasure to write this story for you.
Viewers are split about the situation, some say that the employees were acting petty while others say Trizzy should have arrived earlier
I don't eat there. They're known to be bigoted, self-righteous, and lacking true integrity.
To quote Pete Buttigieg, one of those who they are bigoted against, "I do not approve of their politics, but I kind of approve of their chicken."
Load More Replies...She says, they were three minutes late. While that is not nice, it is still within the rules. I don't see why people need to make a video about it. I got a terrible burger, yesterday, at a German Five guys. Guess I should have made a video about it instead, of just taking the patties home (to grill properly and season) and throwing the soggy, tasteless rest away.
No, late is late - try getting into a bank after they close, do they let you in ? NO is the answer ....
Load More Replies...Closed means closed. If you're ordering online or through an app Google their close time to make sure you don't go over it. I don't think the employee should get fired either, maybe reprimanded for their bad behavior but that's it. Sorry but I use to work at Starbucks (inside a grocery store) I'd get people trying to order after close all the time and it's annoying, especially when I'm trying to clean up the whole place so we don't fail a health inspection. Do people think we just go home after close? No, every food worker that is working closing shift HAS to clean which can take anywhere from 1-3 hours depending on how many people are working that night.
A lot of people that say they shouldn't have given the sass fail to understand the workers. I worked at these kinds of places, if you don't show that you are throwing away the food they think you will take it home. And you can get into more trouble if you do and the customer complains about it. Even when it is perfectly good food. I once worked at places where I had to stay half an hour to two hours after close because a good friend of the story owner was coming and they needed the story open because everywhere else was close. And because of being open past closed you have people coming it with muddy shoes and destroying stuff because they don't care. And now you have to clean up again and again. Only to leave so late and wake up early the next day to open.
Load More Replies...It's a safety issue. I hate to sound unsympathetic but I would strongly recommend managing your time better. Unlocking the door at closing time? No thank you. That's a security issue. You say all you wanted was to hand you your food, but what's to prevent someone from forcing their way in by strong arming an unlocked door then everyone's safety is in jeapordy. Sorry to disappoint you, but getting your food doesn't take priority over the restaurant safety.
Some people must have never heard of people being robbed. A lot of the restaurants around my area have been robbed either doing just that. Oh it is two minutes past closed but the guy ordered and he is right there. What harm can come of it. Or the employees are leaving through the back door to go home and one is left and it is always the one with the bank money. And boom they get robbed. A great restaurants close to me was robbed just like that three times. Cops did nothing and they just closed the store, it was just not worth it.
Load More Replies...It's the oldest trick in the book to place a late order, arrive after close to pickup then rob the place. It's a security risk. These workers did great, they should receive recognition from their supervisors.
No they did not do great they could have went to the glass and said sorry we are closed they were very unprofessional and if it was me I would’ve been on the phone to corporate and getting both fired
Load More Replies...What’s “disrespectful” is showing up to a place after closing and expecting service.
Do we know it wasn't 10:01? I'm wondering if we're hearing the whole story. No restaurant is allowed to open their doors after closing. It's a safety issue. The only one allowed to open the doors is a manager and while they do have discretion, it's almost never done. The only one that can come in through the doors after hours is an employee. Maybe they forgot their purse or something. A customer coming late doesn't count. The employees should have used better discretion though.
They can't use discretion tho. You can blame the lady laughing, sure, she should not have done that. But if a customer sees their food and they put it under the counter or they think it wasn't thrown away they can lie and say the employee took the food for themselves. They they get into more trouble. I have seen some people fired because of those types of situations.
Load More Replies...The servers were petty for not just handing over a ready order and these guys should have got there on time... No winners here I'm afraid.
Actually, the customer's the winner, they didn't eat that slop.
Load More Replies...If you’ve ever worked in a restaurant you get it. People are exhausted, overworked, underpaid and sooooo tired of the bulls#it that is customer service today. Have some manners and get there before closing.
They probably did something they did not mention in their.. Tiktok. These younger generations, I don't trust them with their Tiktoks. All that fake pranks and good-doing for likes? For all we know they probably pissed the staff off on purpose so they can make a Tiktok that would go viral.
Too many people don't follow rules or laws, for that matter. So, the employees decided to have some fun. Closed means Closed.
The only problem I see is that they went to Chick-fil-A in the first place.
It's only their pleasure to serve before 10 o'clock. After that you can take your a*s to Popeye's.
They were late, they admit it in the video. Was the employee being extra? Yep. Maybe show up on time to get your food. Entitled idiots. And to the writer... You claim you don't know if they got there on time or not... Um, did you watch the video? They say 3 minutes after closing.
Exactly! They probably dragged to the door slooooowly
Load More Replies...If the cashiers close their drawers then they can't sell you the food
They ordered online. This has nothing to do with if they had closed down the registers yet. The food was already paid for, and it was already made.
Load More Replies...This is ridiculous. What a thing to go viral. Chick Fil A is an outstanding company and the workers act with respect. This was a case of a customer arriving late. The workers are NOT allowed to open the doors after closing. And what were they supposed to do with the food? Taking it home would be theft. So they had no choice but to toss it in the trash. They can't risk their job over a customer who shows up late! The people complaining about the worker's attitudes... They were looking at the guy because they can see him out there waiting and watching them. Who wouldn't look? Now this video has people mad at Chick Fil A like these workers did something wrong. They did exactly what they are supposed to do. Customer needs to show up to places on time if they expect to be served.
You're out there looking for fast food at 10 pm; the employees inside are working so they can go home after an 8, 10, 12 (?) hour shift. Closed means closed and yes, the minute the doors are locked, the manager on duty is running the register reports and counting cash. They can be fired for 'just unlocking the door and giving you your order'. Thanks toodaloos for mentioning it.
F*****g right - the poor employee had been on shift for 12 + hours, and the last thing they needed was some disrespectful, ignorant, lazy fat bastard turning up after they HAD ALREADY CLOSED !!! Get over it fat bastard, learn that most of us don't want or like serving people like you, never have and never will. If you'd ever come to order food at anywhere I owned back in the dim and distant past after closing time, you would have been told in no uncertain terms where you should go, and if you didn't listen, you ignorant f**k, we would have quite happily pissed on your order then thrown it at you ....
Considering the strict business nature of the fast food chain, it is not unreasonable to assume when the restaurant closes, it cannot be opened or entered for ANY reason, as per security protocols. And even if they wanted to give the people the food, there was no way to verify who they were when they approached, without violating same said security protocols.
Chick-Fil-A gave me my dinner for FREE one night, because the register was already closed.
The drama was uncalled for but nothing wrong with locking doors at closing,. The employees probably see this situation often, and the customer for them is just another of the same. There is however everything right and gracious about making a concession. From the customer point of view it was a one time occurrence. I think Chick-fil-A would rather be known for what is right and gracious, instead of doing something that was not wrong.
Closing is closing. It's the safety rules. There is no need to be this dramatic about it.
1) late is late. Unlocking doors once closed is not only a security/safety risk it is also against company policy. Plan your food needs better or skip an occasional meal. 2) shallow people often think employees eat unclaimed food. By the customer seeing the food dropped in the trash the TARDY people cannot make yet another baseless claim. 3) sharing via so much of your life via social media may 'seem cool' at the moment but remember this - as you proceed into true adulthood (hopefully that happens!), future employers often search online during background checks. Some posts made during earlier years have cost many people lucrative jobs. Proceed with caution. Having an online rant re a fast food order does not indicate good judgment or admirable reasoning skills.
The employee could have put the order thru the drive thru window and not had to open the doors. Wasting food and being disrespectful is not acceptable. Goes to show that Chic Fil-A and all their goody two shoes, friendly service is just BS.
I understand that they shouldn't open the door if it was already locked; however, they could have motioned to the drive through window and opened it enough to just let the bag out, or put it there and then tell them to go get it. Then, they wouldn't have the opportunity to rob the place. He was right there and it was paid for already. No contact was necessary.
Arrived AFTER they closed this isn't kfc. Also standing outside recording instead of going to the door. This guy was looking for trouble. People like him shouldn't be at chic fil a
Arrived AFTER they closed sat I side the car and videoed instead of going up to the door. Go to kfc. Not welcome at chic fil a
"late is late" then why'd they bother making the food if they knew they'd just throw it out? They MADE THE FOOD
Yes. It seems so bizarre that your order was just thrown away " right in front of you." However I would wait to hear the other side of the story before I can make a judgement. Maybe there was a good reason why it happened.
Safety, an employee has to lock the door and not open it when someone is there once closed. Also the employee has proof he didn't take it home. The only wrong thing the employee did was laugh about throwing the food away.
Load More Replies...I had an issue at that same Chick-fil-A in Norwalk where they said the bathroom was closed at 9 I was standing there at 8:59 and said the bathroom stays open as long as the restaurant is open. After getting passed that, I went to the register to order and was then told me they can't take cash 😡 After a minute or 2 of going back-and-forth at the stupidity of all of this, they finally agreed to take cash. The Norwalk store is the worst store of all the Connecticut locations, it's always dirty and service is never up to par.
Chick-fil-A are openly bigoted. Screw you for supporting them. Would you go to a KKK restaurant?
Why would you compare the 2? Chick-fil-A doesn't kill people. Calm down.
Load More Replies...I worked in a kitchen in a sports bar for 11 years. Of course the kitchen clised before the bar to allow for clean up. More than once someone would come up looking for food. I would tell them i can make you a cold sandwich or salad as everything was off. I would put the money in the register so it could be rung up next day. It was family owned and not a corporation. Made people happy and I felt good doing it.
They can't serve food that's been sitting beyonda certain time frame because that's the quality issue. If they got the food, they could have complained and said it was old. And of they are closed they can't remake it, so it's really the fault of the late arrivers.
I dont know this but perhaps the registers and ability to take payment shuts down at closing as a control etc.
Moral of the story… don’t show up at closing and except service. People fail to understand that those employees can’t just turn down the lights at closing and leave they have to clean the entire restaurant to get it ready for opening the next that. That’s an hour or more worth of work before they can go home. And everyone that shows up near at or after closing slows that process down. It’s really annoying when people show up with the i made it speech. They have lives too. If I can’t get there 30mins or more prior to closing I won’t go at all.
I have done similar. When I worked at Subway, if you called in an order and showed up a second after closing time, it sucks to be you. If you can't make it in time, don't order. If you show up for any reason after closing, YTA. S**t, 3 minutes late? You're lucky they waited that long.
Did this really need to be posted? Im suprised its not one of those am i the a*****e stories?
I can see it from both sides but I'm leaning towards the customer, especially since the food was sitting right there if in fact that was their food. Mind you, we're only getting one side to this story but on its face, they should have given him the food. They are still there doing closing duties what's the big deal?
No matter how good I use to think they tasted, their homophobia and rudeness makes them taste of dung to me now.
I would call corporate. I can't believe they would approve of this outcome. As someone else stated, it wouldn't have cost anything for the employee to just hand him the food he had already paid for.
Reminder that when you eat at Chick-Fil-A you're contributing to efforts to turn the US into a christo-fascist hellhole.
These comments are divided, just like the country. Two people can look at the exact same story and draw completely different conclusions.
Load More Replies...He should be fired. Clearly staring at them while dumping their food was an act of MALICE.
I have a lot of opinions on this but the part that bothers me the most is that CFA has a big thing about being Christian. Based on what they preach (pun kind of intended) I won't eat there. I have also heard the food is like McDonald's so, morals aside, why would I? I was raised in a Baptist home and although I don't believe in the whole god thing, I do know that if the company really does hold itself to Christian values, all the employee kid needed to justify opening a door to hand a bag of already made, already paid for food to a customer 3 minutes after the doors were locked would be to quote Matthew 7:12 and Proverbs 22:1 to management. This got rant-ish. Employee kid acted like a major douche. It doesn't cost anything to be kind. Staring the customer down while tossing perfectly good and already paid for food in the trash was a full on bratty asshat move. I hope that kid never knows what the cool side of his pillow feels like ever again lol.
Why does anyone still go to Chick-fil-A? My aunt still goes there once a month for a milkshake and I have lost all of my respect for her. There are plenty of good milkshake places. You don't need to go to Chick-fil-A, you don't need to give money to a place that hates gay people. In time, you won't even miss it.
What a lost opportunity for the employee to be the good guy. Ya, the customer was late but the food was right there. Question: would the customer have posted what a great employee had she/he gotten her/his food?
Just one more of many reasons to not eat there. Never went there, never will.
I get they were closing but all they had to do was hand the bag of food through the door as they were locking it. Or leave it outside the locked door- No, instead throw away and waste perfectly good food.
I don't eat there. They're known to be bigoted, self-righteous, and lacking true integrity.
