When her mother found a tumor and restarted chemotherapy last month, 33-year-old stylist Sarah K decided to do something about it. Sarah’s mother, an author and cancer survivor of 15 years, had her hair dyed pink and then styled into a Mohawk.

“She’s doing pretty good,” Sarah wrote on Reddit. “She found a tumor in the same breast last month and is scheduled for a double mastectomy after she finishes this chemo. She is thinking about tattoos covering the area where her breasts used to be rather than reconstruction, which I think will look awesome.”

Chemotherapy attacks rapidly growing cancer cells, but also attacks other growing cells in your body, such as those in hair roots. Hair usually begins falling out between two and four weeks after treatment begins.
