What you see isn’t always what you get. At least, according to the people on r/AskReddit, the third biggest subreddit on the site. Some redditors got together and started gossiping about which of the most popular stars and performers might not be as genuine as we might think.
The author of the thread, redditor u/0belisktheT, sparked a discussion after asking people for their thoughts on which celebrities might be “faking their entire personality.” We’ve collected some of the most interesting replies, Pandas, so have a scroll down and read through some of their thoughts and suspicions.
Entertainment, pop culture, lifestyle, and celebrity expert Mike Sington was kind enough to enlighten us here at Bored Panda about the relationship between celebrities and being genuine. Mike told me that it's difficult to know for sure if a star is truly being genuine or not. "You have to be quite a detective to figure out if a celebrity is being genuine," he said.
"Even with cross-referencing social media with media appearances, with what their friends and other celebrities say about them, you may never figure it out," Mike explained to Bored Panda how difficult things can get for amateur celebrity sleuths. "Some are actually that good at creating an image. And along with their team, it becomes an actual business. Even with all that, slip-ups occur. Alice Cooper has a past client of mine backstage (who has many disabilities) each and every time he is in Sydney. He spends at least 30 minutes each time with him. He remembers every detail about him and his family. He makes him feel like a rock star.

I grew up in Phoenix area where he lives. You'd see him on the golf course a lot. He's very active! He donates a lot to the community and you can find any time there is some sort of celebrity fundraising event in Phoenix he'll be there. My favorite memory of one of those events was a baseball celebrity fundraiser during spring training. They brought out Cardinals (football players), Suns (Basketball players, Coyotes (Hockey) and then there's tiny Alice Cooper in an oversized baseball jersey, participating like the hero that he is.
Metal head here too, I’ll tell ya why most are nice, IMO. People get into metal for a variety of reasons. But many tend to be social outcasts, are often bullied for whomever they are, or sometimes just what they listen to (again, various reasons). The common dress attire probably doesn’t help. Anyways…Rarely do the “bullied and outcast” project the same to others, they know how it feels. Most just wanna live their lives. And the vast majority consider other metalheads like family perhaps for that reason. Many are hella smart and talented in various fields too. Just my $0.02 being my scene, avid concertgoer, and have played with a bunch of metal bands over the years. \m/\m/

I remember reading that the least eventful days in Rock n Rio are when the metal shows happen. Don't know if it's true, but I've been a metalhead for over two decades, know a bunch and a half of other metalheads and I'd bet it's true. As Dio sang, we are all rainbows in the dark.

He was a guest at a local TV show in French in Montreal one day and we was just lovely ! Explained clearly the act he puts on scene and some funny anecdotes. The interviews are greatly edited to fit the time schedule but they decided to air the entire 45 minutes interview at another time during the week because he was just a lovely guest and a big name. My husband delivered furniture to Mr. Cooper's home years ago. He was a very nice man and tipped my husband and his co worker very well.
I heard an interview with him on a local station. He has an incredible memory. Went into details on shenanigans from 35 years ago with the dj interviewing him. Really nice guy. And yeah, he loves golf. Crazy about it.

Most of the heavy metal music I listen to deals with very serious subjects and if there is rage, it's rage against injustice usually. It's not hate-filled. It's definitely far, far less misogynistic than most pop music. Why would it be any surprise that heavy metal rockers are not devil worshipers? Is this the 1980s still? As for being moody, I can't say that they are not. Probably like any group of people, some are moody and some are not. As for being Christians, since most heavy metal rockers are angered against injustice and harmful influences in life, there is probably a lot of music against organized Christian religions, considering how much harm they've done to the world.

Same as julie andrews and gordon Ramsay, theres a tendency for kind hardworking people to swear a lot. Actually theres theories that honest people swear more. Also no-bs down to earth people generally tend to care less about stuff like hollow niceties or presenting themselves is a certain way, so they dont care to filter their swearing.

I was interested to get celeb expert Mike's take about the pros and cons of celebrities creating completely fabricated personalities for themselves. According to him, it can be a financially lucrative decision, but one that's exhausting.
"The pro of creating an image or personality is that it sells," Mike shared with Bored Panda. "The image becomes a money-maker which leads to more work." There is, however, a major drawback here.
"The con is it's exhausting. It's very difficult leading a non-authentic life, constantly worrying about what you're doing and saying. It can also be expensive, hiring people whose job is to create that image."

The expert also revealed to Bored Panda that the celebrities we're most drawn to, the stars we're most fascinated by, are most like us in terms of character. Like attracts like, whether we're talking about niceness, drama, or mystery.
"I’m going to be brutally honest," Mike told Bored Panda. "I think people who are genuine and nice themselves are more drawn to celebrities who are genuine and nice, and people who revel in drama are more drawn to the celebrities who are always involved in drama."

"When meeting a celebrity in person, get rid of all expectations. Expectations can just lead to disappointment. Some celebrities are just like they seem on screen, some are not. You’ll most likely have the best encounter if you go into it with zero expectations,” Mike told me earlier.

The expert, who has met hundreds of celebrities during his lengthy career, said that we should try to be as genuine and natural as we can before meeting a star.
"Stay grounded and be yourself, it’s really just a situation of a person meeting a person. Keep it that way and you’ll keep the celebrity comfortable. You don’t want to scare them off!"

I'm friends with someone who worked on a set with Bruce Willis. An intern at one point went up to him and told him how much he loved and appreciated his work. Bruce smiled and said thank you, and as soon as the intern walked away went to the guy's manager and proclaimed he would leave set if the intern wasn't fired immediately. The kid was fired and its pretty f**ked considering how much time and work he probably put in just to get to that point

You don't fake a personality, you have a persona which is a separate contextual appearance of your personality. The same way you might act differently in front of your colleagues vs your friends vs your family, some celebrities might have different behaviours that they put on to suit the version of themselves that relate to their public career.
That being said Samuel L. Jackson had so much success with some of the characteristics of his earlier roles that he constructed them very successfully into his entire career persona.

Met Jeff Bridges when he showed up at my movie theatre on a school day; introduced himself as JJ (sadly I forget his wife's name), he was so nice and approachable, tipped me $5 just for chatting with them before their movie. Hilariously, he was wearing a Big Lebowski 'The Dude' t-shirt.
I've met Michael Jackson (a number of times) as well as his sisters Janet and La Toya. Janet was a bitch. La Toya was sweet and Michael was so humble. He smelt incredible too

Back when I was a teen, my dad had a busineß trip in Miami and he brought me along. We stayed at a hotel that had a no tipping policy due to the amount celebs that stayed there. While having a lunch in the hotel restaurant, we saw Whitney Houston. As a teen, I was excited. What happened next made me despise her. She asked for ice water. The waiter brought it to her. Apparently the water was not cold enough. She threw the water at the waiter and screamed tirads at him and calling him everything but his name. It was then I realized on why Whitney's man treated her the way he did. It has been over 30 years and I still refuse to listen to her music.

Well, when I saw them their opening act (The Dickies) was much better than they were, so I guess they deserve that.

My cousin is a rigger and meets a lot of artists. One of the worst to work for was Billy Joel. Terrible food was offered for the workers (many got sick). Billy was standoffish and rude. Made me annoyed because my husband and I went to the show she was rigging. BTW, the food for workers is important... you don't want them leaving the venue when they have so much to do in such a short period of time when they load-in and load-out. The only time they get off is the short time during the performance. It's part of what is paid for when you pay the crew... and if you don't give them good food, it's saying that you don't appreciate what they do. It's hard work.
I'd like to add a star to this list but only in a good way. Carrie Fisher. Met her during Star Wars Celebration in London 2016, a few weeks before she sadly passed away. In the queue for an autograph I talked to other fans and everyone had only nice things to say about her, that she listens, is a little excentric but in a fun way etc. She comes out to her table, with a huge bodyguard next to her. She says hi to everyone and then asks the bodyguard to lean forward, which he does. Then she puts some glitter on his head and says "Now you're fabulous too!" and they both laugh. Then she asks every person if they'd like some glitter too, on their hand, and most say yes. When it's my turn I ask to get some on my head, like the bodyguard, and she stands up and asks me to come around the table! Her agent, or whatever, says there's no time for that and Carrie casually exclaims "There's always time for glitter!" and puts her hand on the top of my head! Wonderful lady! <3
Easy to tell what a celebrity is like by what they consider to be charitable. Found out recently that Matt Damon runs a "charity" where he's basically a loan shark to people in developing countries so they can buy water. Instead of just giving them water with all his millions, he actually asks for donations to extort interest from the most vulnerable people in the world. Like who the f**k even thinks up something like that, let alone call it a charity?
The mini loans are often used to help people enter a trade or start a little business. Also some people in need don’t want to take charity, so this gives them a way to get help without feeling uncomfortable. I think your criticism is misplaced.

This is hilarious. Who here among us act, at work, the same way as when we are off work?? ALL OF US. These people are working, and part of their job is to have an agreeable personality when on screen. There is no reason whatsoever that they should be held to a different standard than we are when we're off, or on break for that matter. No matter how much money they make, it's ridiculous that they should be expected to be "on" 24 hours a day, at the drop of a hat, just bc you feel the need for a selfie.
That's a fair point. To expect a performer to be 'on' all the time is unreasonable. However there are some entertainers who are pleasant and friendly while still maintaining boundaries. Notice how you never see Dolly Parton or Keanu Reeves in these types of lists. The press may gossip about them but the public like and respect them. It's generally acknowledged that Keanu Reeves will probably never be considered as one of the greats but so what, he's a beautiful soul who does a fantastic job. The absolute star that is Dolly Parton is the first to enjoy a laugh at her expense but this woman is no joke and people who do business with her know she has a rock-hard brain who knows her worth yet is fair. No-one's saying that if you work in the public eye that you gotta walk around kissing babies and grinning desperately from ear-to-ear - but being warm and appreciative can take you far.

Easy to tell what a celebrity is like by what they consider to be charitable. Found out recently that Matt Damon runs a "charity" where he's basically a loan shark to people in developing countries so they can buy water. Instead of just giving them water with all his millions, he actually asks for donations to extort interest from the most vulnerable people in the world. Like who the f**k even thinks up something like that, let alone call it a charity?
The mini loans are often used to help people enter a trade or start a little business. Also some people in need don’t want to take charity, so this gives them a way to get help without feeling uncomfortable. I think your criticism is misplaced.

These people are working, and part of their job is to have an agreeable personality when on screen. There is no reason whatsoever that they should be held to a different standard than we are when we're off, or on break for that matter. No matter how much money they make, it's ridiculous that they should be expected to be "on" 24 hours a day, at the drop of a hat, just bc you feel the need for a selfie.
That's a fair point. To expect a performer to be 'on' all the time is unreasonable. However there are some entertainers who are pleasant and friendly while still maintaining boundaries. Notice how you never see Dolly Parton or Keanu Reeves in these types of lists. The press may gossip about them but the public like and respect them. It's generally acknowledged that Keanu Reeves will probably never be considered as one of the greats but so what, he's a beautiful soul who does a fantastic job. The absolute star that is Dolly Parton is the first to enjoy a laugh at her expense but this woman is no joke and people who do business with her know she has a rock-hard brain who knows her worth yet is fair. No-one's saying that if you work in the public eye that you gotta walk around kissing babies and grinning desperately from ear-to-ear - but being warm and appreciative can take you far.
