For the last 10 years, American artist Ra Paulette has been walking alone into New Mexico’s desert to work. He spends his time carving a sandstone cave that he found, turning it into a wonderful subterranean space full of light.
With no one but his dog for company, Paulette created different designs and styles for every cavern, giving each one very specific qualities and textures.
The purpose of this gigantic artwork is to create an environment that would inspire “spiritual renewal and personal well being.” It will also serve as a venue for artistic events once it’s finished.

As an individual who has one of these amazing works of art on my private property, which was commissioned, I find it imperative that Bored Panda communicate that all these caves by Ra Paulette are on private land, and not open to the public to prevent all the horrible vandalism and trespass going on by the misinformation being disseminated. Because I want to, and love to share, I DO OFFER TOURS BY APPOINTMENT ONLY, of the one on my land. OriginNewMexico.com
He should charge a small price for people to be able to go through it and see all of it
First of all, this is some impressive stuff, but is it just me, or would the slightest seismic activity take most of this down??? From all the footage I saw, his "carving" is taking place in what seems to be primarily sand, not rock or stone. How is this environment stable or safe?? If there's some key point I'm missing, feel free to clue me in. I haven't seen the documentary yet, so maybe the answer is there.
Absolutely amazing. This man's love for the earth has been expressed so beautifully. Love it when people go creative without govt. $, etc.
College student Discovers & family that owned the land kept Kartchner Caverns a secret for 20 yrs til it could become a protected state park

For those who find his work desecrating or disrespectful, he CREATES the caves by removing sandstone. He does NOT carve ancient caves. :-)
Maybe those who find his work desecrating will change their minds when they know that he CREATES the caves by digging away sandstone... :-)
Incredible artist to his very soul and tenacious is an understatement. I am truly inspired, his ground is sacred if you ask me.
I hope It lasts for ever. And it becomes the greatest discovery after 1000 years! Way to go!
Good story, but it would be even better if instead of saying, "Without no one but his dog ..." you said, "Without anyone but his dog ..."
I WISH HE HAD OWNED THE LAND. THEN THERE WOULD BE NO QUESTIONS ABOUT ANY OF IT. IT WOULD JUST BE BEAUTIFUL!
HIS ART IS BEAUTIFUL BUT WHAT ABOUT THE NEXT GUY'S, WHO'S ART MAY NOT BE. DO WE WANT OUR WILDERNESS COVERED WITH SOMEONE'S IDEA OF 'HIS' ART

What a fabulous legacy this man has left behind. Like the cathedral by Gaudi in Barcelona, it will draw people long after he has passed.
It was "carved" from a piece of sandstone! It is a man made cave. It took him 10 years. It is not a million year old cave, Guys!
I love people like him, wish there were more. Gorgeous work by the way.
I wonder what future archaeologists will think when they find this aeons ahead of time.
Amazing! And this could totally be the set of one of the new Star Wars movies!
Pretty AMAZING ... When / where will the entire documentary be shown
❤️This sanctuary❕❕want to go there and run my hands along the smooth sandstone walls...
Only thing I feel bad about is he is not working as an architect- because I'd like to see his stuff everywhere.
