This is one of the many reasons I don't think people should let their cats wander freely outside. Only in a contained backyard they can't escape. It's too dangerous. We don't let dogs just wander the neighborhood--why do we let cats?
When my mother took the cats to a cattery, there was a sphinx cat that all the other cats avoided, apparently... Our speculation was that the cats were afraid to catch lose-all-your-hair-sickness. While cats have no knowledge of illness, avoiding "weird-looking" members of the same species is an easy evolutionary shortcut...
