Cats usually make this sound when they’re content, but they also purr when they’re sick, stressed, hurt, or giving birth. The street cats in Rome are a bit different. There are groups of people who run the ruins where they live as the perfect place for the cats. They are fed,go to the vet, and they have subscriptions if you want to 'adopt' one, or you can actually adopt one of the kittens and take it home. (I don't know the rules for foreigners; you'd have to check the customs people about that.)

I know where this is! When I was there I watched another tourist approach a cat and go "Awww hi kitty kitt--AH!!!" Kitty kitty didn't want his sunbathing disturbed.

These were great. My roommate had to put his cat down just today. She was 22 years old. I think this will definitely lift his spirits.
I'm not sure. Chances are, it will be heartbreaking. He loved his cat and might not be ready to confront himself with such a load of cuteness and silliness while he's deprived of his own... Consider he's grieving really hard.
