A Chair With An Integrated Running Wheel Was Invented For Cat Lovers

Those of us who work at home and own a cat probably know how nice it is to have a cat laying by your side. The problem is that cats are very independent, and sometimes just don’t hang around where we hang around. If only there was something that could bring you and your cat together a little bit more frequently…

One might think that this is too niche of a problem, but in fact, it’s just a problem about finding the right niche for a cat. Two bright-minded designers Stephan Verkaik and Beth Horneman believe that they’ve designed a perfect solution for bringing you and your cat together. It’s the Loveseat: a chair with a built-in exercise wheel for a cat. The wheel will let your cat get the amount of exercise it needs without letting it run away from your comfy spot. Your presence will motivate the cat, and the cat’s presence will motivate you back. A win-win for both parties.

“Everything we buy for our cats ends up in a corner or in the spare bedroom. However, the reason we have a pet is because we like to spend time together. Our goal is to ensure that we and our cats can share the best places in the house,” said founder Stephan Verkaik. The project is out on Kickstarter, so check it out if you’re interested to learn more!

Clearly neither has ever seen an actual cat. The best you can hope is the cat occasionally sits on it; more likely it will use some feature unexpectedly (like, maybe use the shadow on specific times in specific weather; or unobservedly store live worms under it) or totally ignore.

I wouldn't want to buy it without an return guarantee if the cat don't like it.

Hi Island Life :). I’m Beth, co-founder of Catham.City. We’re offering the product well below retail price on Kickstarter to help get it launched and into your homes! Unfortunately, because we’re not yet selling though a retail platform (where there would be a physical location which can resell the product if it doesn’t work for you), we can’t offer returns when the cat doesn’t like it. I know cats an be unpredictable and have a mind of their own, so before buying a loveseat, make sure to know your cat’s energy level. My Oliver loves to use the wheel, but he’s also high energy and often races around the house and climbs furniture!

I like it but I doubt my cat would use the spinning wheel as intended. She'd probably either just lie in it or ignore it entirely and lie on the chair after I get up

To get them using it you either put the red dot laser on the wheel just ahead of kitty and as she reaches for it you move it slightly and keep doing that soon kitty is running on the wheel. The other method is pretty much the same but you use a favorite toy that your cat loves to grab as you move it. Of course we did not try this with our cat so not sure how well that works.

Hi Anna, I’m Beth the creator of the Loveseat :) actually, the cat in the photo is my Oliver and he does use the wheel. It was a bit tough to get ‘action’ photos with good enough quality that websites like BoredPanda would post, especially as we did all photography with our phones! Check out our Kickstarter or facebook page to see some videos of Oliver and a friend’s cat in action!

Note that the photos show the cat doing everything except using the wheel for its intended purpose. I guess cats aren't hamsters or mice. Who knew.

We have a cat wheel and both of my cats love it. But you have to teach them how to use it. Also the wheel in the pictures is way to small for a grown up cat, it will not be healthy for the cat's back.

So the cat sits on the chair and reads his/her favourite book and the lady acrobat spins for keaping in shape. I see.

Cats are very energy efficient because they are hunters - none of mine would even think about running without getting anywhere or catching anything...

I’ve learnt the hard way that my cat does not like the fancy things that I buy for her, only the boxes that the products came in.

The reason there's no video is that they couldn't find a cat willing to use the damn thing. They had to pose that cat for these pictures.

Exercise wheels for cats already exist - just put it near your armchair, if you want to. They are quite unashamed to put this on Kickstarter.
