Cat Figures Out Owner Does Not Enjoy Her Live Gifts, Starts Bringing Giant Leaves Every Morning

It’s a very common cat behavior to show their appreciation and affection by bringing gifts for their owners. These cat gifts are, more often than not, the results of a hunting session and involve rodents, birds, and other small creatures in a state of extreme distress.

Needless to say, these gifts are rarely welcomed by their ungrateful humans. This most likely causes confusion and hurt to our poor feline friends who cannot understand why such treasured gifts are being constantly rejected!

This was the case with Baloo, a young silly cat with an owner named Ben. “She always looked so confused and sad, which made me feel pretty bad,” Ben said about Baloo in an interview with the Dodo.

Baloo is not just any old feline, however. The pet cat quickly figured out that Ben has other tastes in gifts, and went out to hunt for something nicer, something less…alive. “It took a couple of months of me rejecting her gifts for her to start bringing me leaves. They were always big, nice looking leaves,” Ben said. “It was such a relief from the live mice every morning that I would show my gratitude by taking the leaf and playing with it while she sat on my chest.”

“She knew she was doing something right now.”

Proving herself to be an unusually intelligent and empathetic cat, Baloo carefully selected only the best leaves for her lucky owner, much to the relief of the local wildlife. These days, however, the adorable cat has found lazier ways to show love for Ben. She will comfort me when I’m feeling down,” Ben told the Dodo. “She’s not a lap cat by any means, but when I’m upset or nervous she will hop up onto me, push me back so I lay down and then she’ll just sit on my chest purring like mad and nuzzling my face with her nose. She’s a very loving cat.”

This is Baloo, a cat who couldn’t quite understand why her owner Ben was rejecting her thoughtful gifts of live rodents and birds

“She always looked so confused and sad, which made me feel pretty bad”

So Baloo decided to try a different tactic

She figured out that “after a while, it started getting a bit annoying having half dead animals dropped on your chest every morning”

And Ben might appreciate something nicer, something less…alive

“It took a couple of months of me rejecting her gifts for her to start bringing me leaves”

“They were always big, nice looking leaves”

Sometimes she would bring a twig instead of a leaf, just to mix it up

But these days, she has found lazier ways to show love for Ben

Love this! Especially the part where Baloo would comfort Ben when he was sad. When my husband was going through chemo, he was weak & laid out on the couch during the day. Our 4 kitties (mama & her 3 kittens) took turns snuggling up next to him. Each one would stay for an hour or so. When they were hungry or wanted to use the litterbox, they'd get up and another kitty would take it's place. This went on for the entire course of his treatment- a couple of months. (Hubby's been cancer-free for 26 years--Yay!)

When I got divorced, I had a kitty who would do this. When I would start crying, he'd get up in my lap, put his paws on my chest and sit nose-to-nose with me, purring like a madman. Kitties just know. ANIMALS just know. I'm glad your hubs had kitties to keep him company, but I'm MORE glad that he's doing so well!!!

What Baloo figured out was: "This human is a total failure as a hunter. I bring him disabled prey, which even the most klutzy kitten could easily catch, and he just throws it away without even trying! But, he's my baby nonetheless. I'll just bring him toys from now on, and watch out for him extra carefully. (sigh!) Even with opposable thumbs, humans are pretty hopeless!"

Not only did my long-haired tuxedo cat named Kaboodle bring me huge, dried leaves in the fall (he'd back in through the cat door so as not to break them), but he also made railroad tracks down the alley! He would lay down parallel twigs (length didn't matter, but circumference did) from the cat door all the way down the alley, in both directions! Your cat looks like the cat I have now - a long-haired tortoise shell named Katie. She does the exact same comforting thing!

Reading this story made me miss my cat. I miss the feeling of having a cat to sit on my lap. Comfort me on sad and depressing days. I especially love the part where Baloo started to bring her owner leaves. I mean, that's one smart cat, analyzing and finding an aalternative. My cat Jazz was also this sweet. He would always bring us dead mice, dead birds, or even dead chicks. He always does this and we never fail to say our appreciation for the gifts he was trying to offer us. it's really fun having cats who will wipe out your stress. I could still remember those days when he would bring us "dead mice" which was just pretending dead. After presenting his gift for us, the mice would slowly escape when Jazz wasn't looking. The mice would start running and Jazz would just stare at it, after a few seconds, when the mice had almost left the area, Jazz would then hurriedly chase it and the show begins. He loves playing with mice. It's been 5 mos since he passed and I still really miss him.

This story shows just how much animals are like us in that they 'feel' and can love. They are capable of understanding and this is so flippin' cool and deepens and broadens the fact that we need to be kinder and more open to the realization that we need to be more respectful to our fellow animal friends.

Lucky you. The last time I rejected a live mouse from my cat it was like he said, "Fine then", and proceeded to immediately rip its head off right in front of me. I never could get that stain completely out of the carpet.

I'm really dissapointed that people downvoted my comment. Everyone has a right to their opinion and not everybody considers this story worthy of admiration on Internet. It's just an everyday thing for a cat owner in my opinion. Anyway, just wanted to say that I get downvoting a spam comment or one containing profanity and ads, but you don't downvote a comment jost because it's authors' opinion is different to yours. That just destroys the whole purpose and diversity of comments.

Chica, our grey tortiese-hair, would bring us live lizards which she would release in the house. I think she enjoyed watching us scrambling around trying to catch and the hapless, de-tailed reptiles. But the best was when she caught the rat that had been living on our deck, making it impossible for us to keep the door open in warmer weather. She killed this one and placed it ceremoniously on the Thanksgiving table, announcing her treat for us with loud meows of pride. We were grateful, and told her so.

My Romeow, who is not a lap boy, and prefers to sleep on the sofa rather than with me at night (I'm sure I kick and wake him constantly), became my kitty-nurse when I got home from a 6 day hospital stay from a bad case of pneumonia on top of my asthma!! He would make sure I was nicely tucked in all around, and slept at my feet all night for two more weeks!!! Now that I'm well ,he has returned to the couch at night. I've also bought him some new toys, and we have play time each night before bed. He is much more affectionate, and happy now that we have our play time!!! I had a cat that would know I was pregnant before I was even "late"! He bought me a kill every single morning for the 260 odd days I was pregnant. Then one morning, no kill. I went into labour that evening. The cycle started again 2 and a half years later when I fell pregnant with my second daughtrer. Luckily, I never had morning sickness. Some of the kills were pretty gruesome.

" Wild" packs of cats in cities have been observed eating. The kittens and lactating moms and pregnant cats eat first. Even when there is not much food. So your kitty is looking after you as if you were a cat. :--))))))

Hehe, cats bring "gifts" because they're trying to teach us how to hunt. Apparently your cat thought you were so bad at hunting she had to step it down for you ;) Still, it's adorable!

One of my indoor cats, Jojo, is always bringing me "gifts". He carries them around in his mouth and makes a guttural meow. He won't drop it until I thank him for bringing me a present. I enjoy the gifts most of the time, however, if he can't find one of his toys, he'll bring me the stapler, the measuring tape or pens. He's even been known to grab his little brother Ralphie by the scruff and carry him around!

When I got my late kitty Ariel-Cozette, she had a little stuffed mouse who she loved. For weeks she would grab mousy-rousy in her teeth and drop it in the littler box. I realized that she was trying to potty train the darn thing. LOL! She finally gave up but while it was going on it was hysterical! We were blessed to have her for 18 years.

My cat would go "big game hunting" for leaves as well. She would carry them through the cat door and leave them all over the place. I'd wake up and there were like ten of them each day. Didn't know which cat was doing it until I saw her stalking and capturing them. It was funny.

But, she does utilize this behavior around the house with the various toys we play with her. she even fetches!! she loves to fetch those super sparkly-light puff balls and she'll bring them back to my feet...up to 15 times in a row now!

Affectionate cats try to teach their human how to hunt (just like they would teach a kitten). If your cat brings you a live prey and you don't catch up, they will deliver a crippled one the next time (easier prey), or even something that has been already dead. They will continue to low the bar for you in hope you would eventually improve your skills. Conclusion: Your cat loves you and thinks you're a s****y hunter.

Sweet cat. Smart too. One of my late cats used to bring me birds, poor thing, and I'd put in in the washroom and close the door and release the bird A.S.A.P. But later I learned that if the birds are wounded, the cat's saliva will kill it anyway, and it will just die somewhere else. Poor Hobbes, he didn't live long enough to figure out there were other ways to please me.

In the spring I leave my sliding patio door open enough for my cat Annabelle to go in and out. In my downstairs bathroom there is a closet where I keep the cat and dog food. I started noticing small animal poop inside the closet, then holes in the side of the food. I knew it wasn't mouse poop but I couldn't figure out what it was. I tried a humane trap which wasn't working so I put a snap trap in the closet. Imagine my surprise when I caught a mole. Mystery solved.

Because my Tortie is an indoor cat the only living thing i have to worry about are crickets and the occasional scorpion that gets tracked in off the kiddo.
