Someone Put Down A Huge Stone To Stop Curb Jumpers And Capture The Fools That Ignore It
A rock in West Omaha is catching everyone’s attention for its ability to wreck cars. That’s right, this is not a Hollywood movie pitch, I’m talking about a rock, not The Rock. Someone put it in place to stop drivers from cutting the corner, but some of them still do it. And get owned. Since the rock is more or less shaped like a ramp, if a car hits it with just a little bit of force, it gets stuck right on top of it. Locals have been documenting these incidents and they even created a Facebook group to share them. It might not be one of the popular ones (yet), but it sure is amusing.

“I honestly am not sure when the rock was put into place,” Devon Barnett, a member of the Facebook group devoted to the famous rock, told Bored Panda. “I did use to work for the Hy-Vee store that is right by the rocks, and I believe it was there when I was working there back from 2000-2010.”

“I know the rock was put there because a lot of people would drive over the curb and get flat tires. It would also cause giant holes where the grass is being ripped out and where rain would collect and make a giant mud puddle.”

Devon thinks that with bigger SUVs, it is hard to see the rock. “But I also strongly believe people just do not pay attention when driving.”
However, she agreed that the rock is becoming a local celebrity. “Now that there are Facebook pages and Twitter pages, I think it started to pick up steam on Twitter first, and then a Facebook profile was created last week. I do have a picture of what was in the baggie on the ground, next to the rock in the photo you shared of me in the article.”

According to the Driving Instructor Blog, there are a few reasons why people can’t make a corner with their vehicles. “For example, many new drivers when they’re turning left, instead of looking at where they’re going while they’re turning, they’re still looking at some oncoming traffic that is down the road. If you’ve decided to turn, then you’ve decided it’s safe to turn in front of that traffic; so what’s the point in staring at it anymore? It’s not like you can turn halfway and then press pause and reevaluate your decision. So essentially you aim your car where you look. If you’re still looking at the oncoming traffic while turning left, then your car will tend to aim towards the oncoming traffic, leading to a wide turn; as oppose to simply making a safe decision to turn when you see a safe gap in that traffic, and then looking where you actually want the car to go and then going there.”

Another common problem is turning the steering wheel too soon – before your car has reached an appropriate part of the intersection/road (cutting the corner). “If you do this on a right turn you run the risk of hitting the curb. Sometimes it seems like new drivers forget that their car has 4 wheels; the front 1/2 of the car makes it around the corner but the rear wheels don’t exactly and might hop the curb. If you do this on a left turn it means your car is traveling over a section of the wrong side of the road, which could obviously be dangerous if there is traffic coming there.”
On the other hand, if you turn the steering wheel too late your car can go too far past the point where you should have turned the wheel (wide turn). “If you do turn the steering wheel ‘too late,’ then you often have no choice but to then turn the steering an additional amount – and thus of course having to un-steer it that amount on top of the required amount – in order to make it around the corner without ending up (or staying) on the wrong side of the road. This is a ton of extra and unnecessary work!! Driving should not be that much work.”

Speed might also play a role in these mistakes. “You have issues with your vehicle speed relative to your ‘steering speed.’ If your car is going so fast that you don’t leave yourself time to turn the wheel enough, then that’s not going to work. This is one of the reasons why we recommend to slow to 20 km/hr before turning, no matter what the circumstance.”

my neighbors live on a street where there are not concrete curbs, just gentle slopes that go down to drainage ditches and then up into the front yards. These people had across the street neighbors with a jerk 19 y.o. with a hot car. He would back out of the driveway at high speed, go up into my neighbors' front yard, and then peel off with squeeling tires and sand & dirt going everywhere where the tire tracks burned in. He would never come over & fix the damage he did. My neighbor had to bring in fill dirt to fill in the tears and peel-off marks in the grass. He asked the a$$hole nicely several times to stop doing this. The bubbah always agreed, but did the same thing the next time he had a hot date. So my neighbor put out a string of two and three foot high big rocks across the front of the yard where the guy kept backing up. Sure enough, it was not long before the 19 y.o. bubbah backed over a couple of boulders at high speed, tearing up the bottom of his hot rod. Too funny..

Oftentimes it seems like some people make up for a lack of brainpower with horsepowers. In SUVs especially, you have lousy visual control over what's close to the car, which is no excuse whatsoever. The parking lot entrance doesn’t have the normal visual cues. Curbs ordinarily have at least one of these cues: painted curb, a hedge, a tree, a sign, a bollard. Drivers are not trained to look for objects shorter than around 3 feet. That’s why there’s a limit to how short(?) a car can be. We have limited attention. When I enter a parking lot I keep a special lookout for pedestrians. I’m not looking for things deliberately placed to damage my car if I don’t pay enough attention. I will say there’s zero chance I’d have hit that rock. But I can imagine a person who’s tired, or distracted by kids or stressed or sad or sick might hit it; it won’t mean they’re stupid. It doesn’t rule it out, either, but humans make mistakes. Now if someone hits the rock because they’re distracted by their phone...that is a bit funny but also scary. What if there were a small child there instead of a rock? People like that shouldn’t be on the road.

We have houses here in the Netherlands that have a big stone on the edge of the house. So in the old days a horse and wagon would not hit the house. They sometimes even chained the rock.

I had to put rocks at my curb so people don't drive thru my yard when the do a illegal u turn. All it takes is once. They don't do it again.

I'm confused. Why would someone "jump a curb" to begin with? Did it save them that much time? Do they understand the damage they could do to their vehicle? That's just odd.
I've seen homeowners do similar things when jackasses keep cutting across their corner lots, tearing up the grass and anything they may have planted there. Though it's not easy to get giant rocks! Especially ones so perfectly ramp-shaped.

I live in Omaha, it does not surprise me. Especially after we were rated the worst drivers (https://www.ketv.com/article/omaha-ranked-no-1-for-worst-drivers/22132984). I started paying more attention and I recognize the terrible driving skills here multiple times a day.
Ha ha I know someone who lived on a corner lot bordering an alley and did that. The first year he had it a lot of fools tried to drive over it. The second year it seemed they'd all learned their lesson.
I'll get downarrowed, but there should be a higher structure there. The people are making right turns, putting the rock on the passengers side of their vehicle. I'm short, and even with the seat all the way up wouldn't be able to see that far down on the passenger's side when next to it. And there are people who have some vision limitations (i.e. early stage macular degeneration or color blindness) who are still given the OK to drive and could have a tough time seeing it as well. The bullying doesn't help
I pointed out that that would terrify me since I'm just learning to drive, I haven't learned how to judge distances on the passenger's side very well yet, and my car has a history of the transmission stalling and such during turns! And yep! Got bullied for it!

You file the claim and they cover what's more than your deductible. I was a victim of a hit and run where the tractor trailer slammed my left side and kept going. Didn't have a dash cam at the time and never saw the tag. It was during Hurricane Florence when I was stuck on the road traveling 8 hours trying to evacuate. I had to pay for the damages to my car. My deductible was $500 so that's what I had to pay to fix over $2000 of damage to my car. Plus I'm still paying for it because my insurance premium went up, as it goes up for "anything that happens on pavement" regardless of fault.

Karma is beautiful. Also, what was the original story that p1ssed off the lot owners so bad they took the time and energy to either buy and place this heavy boulder, or hired a company to do it for them? That's a lot of "I'll show them" energy.
I live down the street from that infamous rock. It's absolutely mind-boggling how many cars have been driven up that thing. Although people really need to watch where they're going, In the driver's defense, the island is too long and the entrance is small The rock is still there, but it's been rearranged and I haven't heard of it happening since.

One of nay neighbors always cut the turn on our joint owned road, his car kicked the gravel onto the road and it aggravated everyone. The others folks wanted to Cut the road wider to accommodate whomever was doing this. I said the inexpensive way would be to line the curve with jagged rocks and maybe whomever was doing it would stop. I knew who it was and didn’t name him knowing he would deny it. A few days later I had the pleasure of seeing him once again take the curve too tight and he received a good bounce on his shiny new car. The problem ended that day!

The worse I saw was someone habitually ran into the white picket fence at the corner. UNTIL the owner put railroad ties across the corner. He now has it beautifully landscaped. But no more cars .
I'm not understanding the whole "turn left" explanation. It seems that all those cars are trying to make a right turn which does not involve any incoming traffic (or am I missing something?). Anyway, one has to wonder, how in the world did they get their driving permit?

Why don't they just shorten that piece of unnecessary divider? It seems to jut too far into the roadway, making it difficult to navigate around. If so many drivers jumped the curb, I think there's probably a good reason. An engineer should take a look at that, and measure what's actually required vs. what is built there.

Taking a different tack: If people don't regularly drive over curbes in this community, but this one is the exception, then there is something about the layout that makes this more likely to happen. Yes, people should pay more attention, but the rock obviously isn't solving the problem. Need to put something higher there. Perhaps tall fencing the length of it, then plant a tree which will eventually be too big to notice. (Plus trees help keep the parking lots from getting so flippin hot in the sun.) On the other hand, if they do it all the time in this community, then there is nothing special about this location, they're all bad drivers, and everything I said above does not apply. (I can tell you that I rarely see evidence of people driving over curbs where I live. )

Although I can't excuse the idiots that hit an obviously huge rock, I think there was a better solution. If you look at the angle of the curb..without the large rock, it's hard to see there is even a curb there...especially if it's dark. Perhaps a better solution would have been to a more obvious curb there along with a street light?
What a stupid piece of landscaping! In many pictures it looks like a rock in the middle of the street. I live in Minnesota and I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be allowed here. After a few snowfalls it would disappear and cause a lot more problems!

Maybe it's time to replace that ramp-shaped rock with something that would stop cars without doing much damage to them. Car repairs are expensive and can be a real hardship.

There's got to be a huge design fail here. It looks so obvious, it must be a blind corner or something. Why not just pave the bit that keeps getting run over? Or get rid of that curb entirely?
Gotta wonder if there is something optical going on with that specific spot.
Maybe an orange traffic cone on top of the rock or a inflatable tube man in a neon colour would help.
This helps enough. After 1 time (which would not even need to happen in the first place), you will definitely learn your lesson. No need for bigger measures! If you can't drive without cutting a corner like that, you deserve that damage by the rock. Just pay full attention while driving. There are no excuses. Excuses like mentioned: "I did not see the rock." --> It could have been a young child sitting or standing there. Or another excuse: "I was tired or distracted." In both those cases, you shouldn't be driving, period. And exclamation point!

I think the rock is too low to be noticed for whatever reason. I don't think they will miss it if it is eye level in height.
I've yet to run over a massive boulder! Planning permissions granted may mean that they have to maintain the 'pointless' curb. It isn't a trap - people really do need to look where they are going or change the vehicle if they can't drive a SUV safely.

I live down the street from that infamous rock. It's absolutely mind-boggling how many cars have been driven up that thing. Although people really need to watch where they're going, In the driver's defense, the island is too long and the entrance is small The rock is still there, but it's been rearranged and I haven't heard of it happening since.
I think the fact that so many people have done it means there’s a visibility issue. Would love to have someone drive there with a dash cam recording the whole thing.

One of nay neighbors always cut the turn on our joint owned road, his car kicked the gravel onto the road and it aggravated everyone. The others folks wanted to Cut the road wider to accommodate whomever was doing this. I said the inexpensive way would be to line the curve with jagged rocks and maybe whomever was doing it would stop. I knew who it was and didn’t name him knowing he would deny it. A few days later I had the pleasure of seeing him once again take the curve too tight and he received a good bounce on his shiny new car. The problem ended that day!

The worse I saw was someone habitually ran into the white picket fence at the corner. UNTIL the owner put railroad ties across the corner. He now has it beautifully landscaped. But no more cars .
I'm not understanding the whole "turn left" explanation. It seems that all those cars are trying to make a right turn which does not involve any incoming traffic (or am I missing something?). Anyway, one has to wonder, how in the world did they get their driving permit?

Why don't they just shorten that piece of unnecessary divider? It seems to jut too far into the roadway, making it difficult to navigate around. If so many drivers jumped the curb, I think there's probably a good reason. An engineer should take a look at that, and measure what's actually required vs. what is built there.
Because a parking spot is on the other side of it. The curb keeps these morons from hitting the parked car. Better they destroy their own car than another's.

Taking a different tack: If people don't regularly drive over curbes in this community, but this one is the exception, then there is something about the layout that makes this more likely to happen. Yes, people should pay more attention, but the rock obviously isn't solving the problem. Need to put something higher there. Perhaps tall fencing the length of it, then plant a tree which will eventually be too big to notice. (Plus trees help keep the parking lots from getting so flippin hot in the sun.) On the other hand, if they do it all the time in this community, then there is nothing special about this location, they're all bad drivers, and everything I said above does not apply. (I can tell you that I rarely see evidence of people driving over curbs where I live. )
Honestly, I’m surprised some local shyster hasn’t sued whoever put the rock there for damages. Not that I agree with doing that, it’s just the kind of country we now live in.
Here in Omaha we placed an idiot magnet in the rock. Seems like it worked.
Although I can't excuse the idiots that hit an obviously huge rock, I think there was a better solution. If you look at the angle of the curb..without the large rock, it's hard to see there is even a curb there...especially if it's dark. Perhaps a better solution would have been to a more obvious curb there along with a street light?
What a stupid piece of landscaping! In many pictures it looks like a rock in the middle of the street. I live in Minnesota and I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be allowed here. After a few snowfalls it would disappear and cause a lot more problems!
It isn't in the street. It's beyond a curb in a parking lot. It wouldn't disappear. It would be covered in snow. Do you drive over curbs when it snows? I don't.

This helps enough. After 1 time (which would not even need to happen in the first place), you will definitely learn your lesson. No need for bigger measures! If you can't drive without cutting a corner like that, you deserve that damage by the rock. Just pay full attention while driving. There are no excuses. Excuses like mentioned: "I did not see the rock." --> It could have been a young child sitting or standing there. Or another excuse: "I was tired or distracted." In both those cases, you shouldn't be driving, period. And exclamation point!

I've yet to run over a massive boulder! Planning permissions granted may mean that they have to maintain the 'pointless' curb. It isn't a trap - people really do need to look where they are going or change the vehicle if they can't drive a SUV safely.
