I think that almost every single one of us has at least one of those items that we've been using for ages, and somehow, even after all this time, it still works like an absolute charm. I guess some things are simply built to last a lifetime. Or a few.

There's this popular subreddit with over 872,000 members called BuyItForLife where people post pics and talk about the oldest yet the most durable high-quality things they own and have been using for a really long time. Some of the items shared in this Reddit community have been around for more than 100 years!

Bored Panda has thoroughly scanned the BuyItForLife subreddit and made a list of the most interesting and fascinating items that have withstood the test of time. As always, don't forget to leave a comment and vote for your favorite ones!

This Mercedes was built without modern electronics and as a result, failures are rather rare.

It may not be OBDII, but it certainly still has a bevy of sensors feeding an ECU for the fuel injection system.

Mercedes Benzes, as well as Volvos and Hondas, will last next to forever if you keep them properly maintained and don't get in any bad accidents. A friend of mine had a Volvo station wagon that ran for 35 years.

I had an old Volvo that was fine after two accidents, each time leaving the other car unable to be driven. It lost a turn signal in each of the accidents and got some bumper dents. They were really built like tanks.

These were great ones! The second car having the multilink rear suspension, which premiered in the W201 in 1982. This is a W124, Mercedes' middle class built from 1984 to 1996 (although the sedan went out of production in 1995, the station wagon and four-wheel-drive versions were built until summer 1996, sold as ne until mid-1997), and it definitely was developed in a time where the hassles of typical old cars weren't around anymore, while the hassles of modern cars weren't around yet - kind of a sweet spot. Electronics are present, of course, but not to the extent the higher-valued Mercedes have. That, the higher production number and lesser amount of optional stuff than in SLs or S-class makes it managable at least - while the mechanical components already are modern (suspensions, four-valve engines from 1987 on, from 1993 on nearly in all models). A great one, keep it!

That's not even the half-life for a W124 body Merc. My diesel had around 340k before getting rear-ended and totaled. I was still able to drive it away w/out a problem after the accident.

You certainly can't fault Ford for the stability of the vehicles. Mercury was created in 1938 by Edsel Ford - as a lesser alternative to the Lincoln - and was kicked out of the Ford family in 2011. I always really liked the Cougar - of which many are for sale across the country now.

Don't always trust KBB or NADA books. Just because they say it doesn't make it so. If it's in the condition it looks like in the picture and the interior's just as nice, I bet you could get $3000 for it.

I had an old Volvo (244 estate model, 1976 registered as I remember), that had 200k (miles) on the clock when I bought it in 1999 for about £250. Sold it 3 years later for the same money but had put on a further 150k miles - so 350,000 miles. Only ever gave it a yearly service and changed tyres / brakes when needed. Not a fast car, but big, comfy and reliable ..... probably still going now ......

Regulary changing the engine oil and conservative (boring? ) driving habits will do wonders for a car's longevity. I have an economy brand, 17 years in service, with 333k miles/536k kilometers on the odometer. I'm never the first or fastest, but I've watched friends buy car after car while keeps going and saving me money.

At that age and that many miles, I'd advise you to have a good mechanic thoroughly inspect the suspension. I can tell you from experience it's no fun to be going down the road and have a tie rod let go.

So you can gift this set to your children, as a suggestion only, research how to maintain the wooden handles. The bottom of the handles on the two pans on the right are burnt and may need attention to prevent future problems. Also, adding some type of moisturizer would prolong their life. That being said, it's a fantastic set that I would treasure!!
