Skeleton-like Machines That Seem To Behave Like Natural Organisms

I am an independent artist who creates slowly moving mechanical structures. My machines generate repetitive movements and create smooth shapes and patterns that interfere with spectators’ minds. I am fascinated with science, physics and mathematics.

Geometric patterns and M. C. Escher’s works have always inspired me. It is amazing how one machine with a single movement can create complicated or even chaotic movement patterns. With my works, I want to make the human mind feel relieved and create an almost hypnotic effect.

These are two of my machines – Bussola and Asinas. The skeleton-like structures behave like some kind of natural organism, a living creature slowly moving forward through space.

In 2008 Jennifer Townley completed her degree in Artscience at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in The Hague (The Netherlands). Since then she has been working as an independent artist, creating mechanical sculptures that often move very slowly. Powered by electric motors her machines generate intense repetitive movements and changing patterns that interfere with the spectators mind.
