“They’ve Kind Of Lost Touch With Their Workers”: Man Shows A ‘Goodie Bag’ He Received From Burger King To Celebrate 27 Years Of Loyalty

Staying loyal and going the extra mile to help your company flourish eventually has to pay off, right? We expect our efforts to lead to something good, whether it’s a promotion, a pay bump, or at least some sort of genuine appreciation. But while dedicating 27 years of your life to one corporation may seem like a big deal, one Burger King employee recently found out that in fact, the opposite is true.

Kevin Ford, a 54-year-old cook and cashier who hasn’t missed a day of service, recently showed off his work anniversary gifts in a video that went viral for all the wrong reasons. The clip that was shared on TikTok shows Ford standing in the kitchen. He’s going through his goodie bag filled with bland stuff given as a token of appreciation for his nearly three decades of perfect attendance. A movie ticket, a bag of Reese’s Pieces, a Starbucks tumbler, and two packs of Lifesavers — things that amount to virtually nothing.

This whole incident deeply resonated with many people who felt both saddened and enraged about the items Ford received. Many felt let down to witness this modest recognition and believed it simply wasn’t enough. However, Ford himself later expressed gratitude for anything he gets. Read on for how the story goes and let us know what you think of it in the comments!

Later on, Ford expressed his gratitude in an interview while adding that the corporation has “lost touch with their workers”

After going viral for opening up a small bag of gifts he received from HMS Host, the company from which Burger King hires staff, Ford said in an interview with TMZ that he was grateful for the gesture: “I’m happy about anything, I’m thankful for anything I get, I’m not that type of person, believe me. I’ve been through a lot.”

However, the man who works at the Burger King in the Las Vegas airport said it looked like the organization sent him a load of “stuff they had laying around that they put together.” He still called HMS Host a great organization to work for, but he felt a bit let down by their gifts.

“Like most big corporations, they’ve kind of lost touch with their workers, and through Covid and whatever, they started cutting out programs.” Ford has been around the company for a long time to know that before Covid, workers would get checks for their work anniversaries. “We used to get checks for 20 years, and that’s what I actually thought that movie ticket was. I was like ‘hey, they finally gave me my card’, and then I saw it was not even two movie tickets — it was one,” he said, adding that this all seemed like “this is just too much.”

People online truly appreciated and were touched by Ford’s gratitude. The worker is simply happy to have a job and doesn’t want to criticize his employer. “I’m not trying to put them on blast either, I wanna be working there for 28 years,” he mentioned.

Thankfully, someone did step up and try to show the hero of this story some appreciation for his more than a quarter-century of service. His daughter, Seryna, started a GoFundMe fundraiser in a bid to give her father a better gift and help him visit his grandkids in Texas. As she explained in the description, people “shattered the original goal,” and over $40,000 have already been raised in donations.

“The man in that video is my father,” Seryna wrote. “He has worked at his job for 27 years and yes, he has never missed a day of work.” The daughter explained that Ford had to take up this job as a single father when he gained custody of her and her older sister. Ford remarried later on, though he continued to work at HMS Host because of the health insurance.

“[It] got all four of his daughters through high school and college with full healthcare coverage. My dad continues to work here because though he does look young, he is coming up on retirement age and leaving would cost him his retirement,” Seryna continued. “In no way are we asking for money or is he expecting any money but if anyone feels like blessing him, he would love to visit his grandchildren.”

The employee noted in the TMZ interview that he would also like to get a new car — American and hybrid. “But that’s a dream, I’m not aiming for those things. I’m just aiming to get through the next day.” Moreover, the man revealed he would love to have a day off to visit his friends, have some fun and relax. Although he quickly added, “I can’t even think about a day off, I haven’t had a day off in so long.” Luckily for him, it seems that sometimes dreams do become reality.

Ford got emotional while talking about this whole experience: “All the love that people are giving me is just so, so overwhelming, I just wanna thank everyone so so much.” The employee added all he wants is to go to work, have fun, and make everybody’s life better, “like they’re doing to me.”

A spokesperson for Burger King told TMZ, “The Burger King brand and its many franchisees nationwide are committed to recognizing and celebrating the achievements of the thousands of people serving across a wide range of roles — all dedicated to providing our Guests a world-class experience.”

“Following review with this location’s franchisee, we’ve learned that this video depicts a Team Member in receipt of a peer-to-peer reward in recognition of a short-term positive performance/experience,” they continued. “The franchisee offers its Team Members a robust employee recognition program, which includes the recognition of tenure milestones and monetary awards.”

Let’s just say people online weren’t big fans of Burger King after watching the video, here’s what they had to say

This is why I do not give my all to my job. My husband on the other hand does. (we work at the same place in the same department) He busts his a** hustling everyday to get things done. Do they notice, No. He made the company $1 million in sales last year. Nothing. I do NOT do more than what I was hired for and will not because they will not notice nor will they care.

same, and it's not even about being mediocre or something, it's about being fair. There's really no reason to do more than what you're paid for. No one works out of loyalty to the team or for fun, we're all there to pay our debts, nothing else.

THIS is the reason why universal healthcare will NEVER pass in the U.S. Corporations rely on people working for nothing under bad or horrific conditions just to be covered by company healthcare.

Yep. That's capitalism for you. It relies on coercion and oppression to function. And what's more coercive than threatening to take away a worker's healthcare if they don't fall in line? To me... that's violence. Threatening workers with death due to lack of coverage if the workers don't do what the capitalists want. Always making sure there is a large supply of unemployed workers on hand (real unemployment rate is much higher than advertized unemployment rate due to arbitrary restrictions in the fed's definition of "unemployed") so that current workers are constantly worried about being replaced and losing health insurance. If they don't give up their entire life for work, their are plenty of other desperate people who will gladly do so. This is also why homelessness is an issue in the US. We could solve homelessness at any time (we have more empty homes than homeless people) but we choose not to. Because homelessness is used as a threat to keep the lower level workers in line.

My org used to give jackets every 5 years. The jacket selection was upgraded the longer your employment but even the 5 year jackets were great and high quality. Our org was taken over by a big university between my 5th and 10th. I got a nice London Fog jacket for my 5th and a pen for my 10th.

My uncle, 30 years in management at a national phone company, returned from a vacation to find he'd been 'retired' in his absence. Don't let the door hit your butt on your way out, fella. My partner, 24 years a software engineer with a major insurance firm recently bought by a German player, was shown the door without benefits for refusing to relocate from California to India. Do employee-owned firms treat exiting people better?

My father worked for NC Machinery for 36 years. In the last five years with the company, he took so much c**p from them because he was afraid they were trying to find a way to force him into retirement. He wanted his full pension and was willing to work himself in the ground to get it. When his retirement party came around, I drove me and my sister to the event. We were rudely cut off by a car that was driven by my father's boss. When I pointed it out to him, his wife was embarrassed but he seemed uninterested. My fathers parting gift..a bottle of Crown Royal. My father hadn't touched booze in 30 years. I still have the unopened bottle after my dad passed 15 years later.

Why isn't he at the very least a manager? Or shift leader? Is he on the spectrum and just not cut out for it? Did he never ask? Why isn't he running his own franchise? Someone isn't telling the whole story here. REGARDLESS, this man should be given stock options after twenty years, period. You think janky healthcare is enough when 90% of the 1st western free world gets basic healthcare covered for nothing? That goofy toddler birthday party gift bag is a SLAP in the face and he's not UNGRATEFUL for it! SHOULD buy him a decent watch. Man had made your disgusting corp a couple million, EASY. If some incredible restauranteur like Guy Fieri doesn't snap him up to help run one of his operations I'd be surprised. I KNOW that as long as people are happy, secure, them they stay. Some can't see advancement, it's on him, sure but something doesn't smell right. The joy, the gratitude, the humility this man posseses and dedication few will ever have. It would be an honor to hire this man elsewhere.

I'm no huge fan of BK but a Whopper every now and then is good. That's how I like my burgers most the time anyway (but I cook better everything). To have this man make a sandwich for me would be a lifetime honor for the best fast food burger I've ever had just knowing his dedication and how much he cares, clearly he's passionate about his job I think. I wish I had money to open my own restaurants and food trucks because I love to cook. I'd give a MINT of money to have this man on my side and give him every opportunity to excel and have no less than four week paid vacation every single year. Fast food and restaurants often operate on tight profit margins and this terrible Globalist destroyed economy only makes it's worse but this man is the sort that brings in tons of customers with care and dedication. You can tell. I love his story. GLAD that his GoFundMe his daughter started got him the ability to see his babies... Now everyone keep going and help him BUY HIS OWN STORE!!!

I will work harder if, and only if, I get a raise- not a bonus. I will not work more with just the promise of a raise, because people can twist their words. And if I don’t get a raise for long enough, there are always other companies that are hiring.

NoTipNovember? Seriously? Why would you want to hurt lower level employees by taking away a portion of their income? I admire your desire to change things but "get involve with politics?" Half the country is battleing the other half to bring some sanity to our leadership. Politics won't help this situation. Why? Because the very corporations that run places like BK also own our government. Everyone blames Presidents for the ails of our nation. Inflation is not the president's fault, Neither is the sinking of the stock market. Want to know who is responsible for those issues? Corporations. Driven by greed. And in the US greed is a virtue. Not a vice. This is what capitalism has created. Irresponsible capitalism.

I can relate some to this gentleman's experience. I too spent over 2 decades with a corporation that constantly rewarded service. It is better for corporations to recognize good and loyal employees with things that are tangible. I would have thought after 27 years this man would be given more responsibilities. He was in my eyes an excellent employee. They are not as common as they once use to be. But recognition is empty without reward. Did this man not want manager position? Could he not have been given further education to move up in the corporation? I only say this because after 20 years in my own job, I really had no choice but to retire. I came to realize that my position as a technician was after 20 years nothing more to my employer but a useful idiot. So the reality is that corporations do not give a flying fart in space about their low lever employees. In their eyes we are just cogs in the machine that makes them gobs of money.

When are we going to jump off that rocket sled racing to the bottom.and start climbing back up? BK will distance themselves from the franchises, especially in the wake of negative publicity. Their profits are measured by the franchisee’s who pay set revenues for their ownership and use of BK’s name/products. Hopefully, this will lead to the employee’s proper recognition. To say that the gifts were “peer-to-peer” is a typical standardized corporate response that does nothing more than show how out of touch and uninvolved they are, but care only about the profit margin! Fast food chains have the worst reputation for employee retention and it’s a practice used by corporate America to lessen healthcare benefits and raises for those who’s work ethics are clearly unmatched! Good luck finding an outstanding person like this man, in a world where good help is hard to find and no o e wants to work for those measly wages. Perception is everything, but not to conglomerates that view employees as a cog in the system that is easily replaceable.

This is why the FED is raising cost of living, to force people back into jobs like this. We have a workforce shortage because after the pandemic, everyone realized that it wasn't worth it working these dead end jobs and losing so much time with family for a company that could care less about it's people. Talk about supply chain issues when they're sending 55 billion dollars worth of weapons to Ukraine. Military industrial complex approved for another 45billion in spending. We could use that money to create our own supply right here in America. Create more jobs right here in America, so guys like this don't have to depend on Burger King.

This is one of the many reasons that I absolutely refuse to spend my money at ANY corporate restaurant food chain. The CEOs and their share holders and board of directors make millions for doing nothing worthwhile and the worker bees make a pittance for their hard work and dedication. Corporations and their shareholders, board of directors and CEO'S are the reasons why there is so much poverty across the planet. Society would be better off if Corporations didn't exist.

No offense, and I mean that truly. But is working at Burger King this man's highest level of work he wanted to obtain? It seems so if he's been there nearly 30 years. But if you can put that much dedication, loyalty, and professionalism into your work, why not take on a job that has growth potential in both skill set and promotion, benefits, and bonuses. He sounds like a very hard worker that settled.

Having seen this article in various places, I haven’t seen where he is retiring or leaving. They all state it was for his anniversary (27 years) & perfect attendance. Most people do not receive any acknowledgements until they leave, if then. The disrespect of the worker has become the way of corporate America and one of the reason we are no longer a great nation. I retired after 30 years and received a paper certificate, an extremely small generic lapel pin (who ever wore these?), and an inexpensive wrist watch, (who still wears these?) as did all the others who retired with this amount of experience.

I do my job the best if my ability each and every day. I don't do it for the company. It's how I was raised. When others at work complain about emails reminding people about what needs done or adding tasks, 8 don't worry or complain. I just keep working like I do. Doesn't affect me or make me upset. I just do me. When I leave at the end of the day, I've done everything I could.

I'm sorry to be the one to say this but... This is a fastfood chain in a capitalist world. In case you have NEVER studied History, Capitalism is a economic/Society choice wich seeks to maximize income. Fasfood chains are known to be highly competitive (that means minimizing costs the most one can). It is logical it is not the choice to making a retirement plan, and that it IS impressive he got something, instead of having been sacked for someone younger and faster to take his job. For those that will most certainly dislike my comment, I really hope you are from somewhere that tries its best to being something outside capitalism (and I most certainly do not mean France or Denmark, but something like Venezuela or Kingdom of Butan, since Europe has a motive they can today rest "at ease". More information: History Book); otherwise you will just be Hypocritically downvoting

About 15 years ago a retail company I worked for made the Forbes list of best places to work, and we all got a plastic shoe box with four square magnets, some sticky notes, decorative thumb tacks (I traded to get ones that look like frogs), a flashlight keychain, a pen, and I swear there was one more thing but I can't recall what it was. I've always been a really hard worker because it's been a way that I could run away from my problems (though I didn't really recognize that until I became disabled and couldn't do it anymore). That plastic shoe box of junk was enough to make me feel disillusioned, it would have been better if they hadn't given me anything at all. I can't imagine how I might have felt getting that c**p after 27 years.

If you "are in no way asking for money" then why did you put up a GoFundMe, the very purpose of which to ask for money? If you are to believe Burger King (and I do), then this was a gift given to him by his PEERS and NOT an official BK gift. Seems true since most companies would recognize you on you at 25 or 30 years, not 27. Personally, I'm having a hard time believing that any part of this story is true for several reasons: 1) He in no way looks 54 2) Who stays as a BK cashier for 27 years? 3) Unless BK has drastically changed their pay scale, a cashier would not make near enough to put 4 kids through college. 4) I find it highly unlikely that BK would have a retirement plan that you lose upon leaving. A 401k, maybe, but you don't lose those when you leave. They are yours to keep Wake up, people! At the very least this is an exaggerated story to get donations and, quite possibly, an all out lie!

Bust your a*s, don't bust your a*s - same pay, same raise, same PTO, etc. His Goodie Bag', while sad on many levels, is still better than the many who get nothing. Not downplaying, that bag is just under a slap in the face for 27 years. Honestly, it looks like something his co-workers put together for him, which would mean Corporate did nothing.

Someone should really start a gofundme for this guy. And BURGER KING/HMS HOST should be the FIRST to donate and that donation should at the very least be enough to pay off in full a new Ford Hybrid that he clearly deserves for the amount of loyalty he has shown that company. ESPECIALLY with todays "Great Resignation" mentality. Guess what big corporations and companies? This is a big part of the reason we even have this "Great Resignation" issue in our country right now! Loyalty like he has displayed to this company should be RECOGNIZED AND REWARDED by the company he has dedicated his life to. Ridiculous.

That's how some places are. I remember working at a long johns and one day it caught on fire. And let's say after that mess I had to call the main company to find out why I didn't get my last check. Found out I had to go to the city and pick it up there. Seen the, former, manager there and asked them about why I had to pick it up there. Was told that "everyone" was told to pick it there. Clearly, I wasn't part of of that group or something as no one told me...

Do you know how hard it is to not miss a day of work let alone for 27 straight years. Hell I have been sitting here thinking if i should log out early. I have only been 2 seconds late one time in 7 years but I usually have about 20 hours of unscheduled abscesses in the year. Plus everything he pulled out of that bag I have lying around my office and that was probably the same for who ever gave it to him. This man deserves so much more for his dedication of years of probably being treated horribly by customers yet still showing up each day and probably with a smile on. This is why people dont want to work, not because people are lazy. They are tired of giving their all and getting nothing back in return while companies make billions and they are struggling to make ends meet. I hope they make it up to him some how.

These mfs we're giving away goodie bags worth nothing with cookies that were gonna be trashed anyway and their management got basically same just better quality ... Hello everyone! Ok the following though doesn't come from me and most important, is not on the company's favor. With that being said, the gentleman is doing exactly what Jesus Christ said in the Bible, in Matthew 5:41 "And if someone in authority compels you into service for a mile, go with him two miles." But, how is that fair? "Matthew 6:20, 21 Rather, store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." I don't know this great gentleman life, but the way he speak, for me, looks like is a well raised. His reward is on the future. Keep the good work sir, you turn in to a good example for all of us.

What do you think he should get for showing up for work and doing his job as agreed? A PAY CHECK! Anything else is a bonus. It's 27 years, not 25, not 30. There's nothing special about a 27 year anniversary. I mean I doubt they did anything special for him on guys 25th anniversary, but we really don't know. As is evident by the comment section there's a lot of low character people and America these days. Showing up for work on time and doing your job to the best of your ability should be the norm, not the exception. Expecting something more than the pay you agreed to work for is ridiculous. I agree that on special anniversaries like five, 10, 25 etc. Would be nice, but to make a big deal over and not getting something special on the 27th is just more evidence of the weakening of society. Like these waitresses that love to post pictures of no tip. First of all most of them are fake, they're just trying to get a GoFundMe started for themselves. STFU and do your job.

Someone isn't telling the whole story here. REGARDLESS, this man should be given stock options after twenty years, period. I'm glad that all of these posts are getting so much attention on the problem of late-stage capitalism, but JUST TALKING ABOUT IT WON'T FIX IT. Stop buying their sh!t. SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT #NoTipNovember . Get active in politics. DO SOMETHING TANGIBLE.

People still haven’t learned that you are just a tool. Burger King could afford to buy this guy a new car if they really appreciate him and it wouldn’t make a dent in their profits. Anyone that believes the company you work for cares about you lives in a fantasy world. YOU CAN EASY BE REPLACED!

Sadly BK is not the o ly company that does this to their employees most if not all mayor fast food companies do this and worst to their employees I've worked for TB for a long time and lately this company has proven that money is more important than the employees they expect so much from the employees they want you to bend over backwards for them while they won't lift a finger for you.

Ridiculous.

He's lucky ... Our goodie bags went like this .. for any one in labor who was new hire you got nothing, for labor over one year a bag of the rejected products we make, for office and management over 1 year a bag of the most expensive products we make (we make cookies) ... These mfs we're giving away goodie bags worth nothing with cookies that were gonna be trashed anyway and their management got basically same just better quality ... It blew my mind o and you also got a free meal consistent of 1 water and 2 tacos ... But just 2 because they charge extra if we went over not even lying

"In no way are we asking for money". Why did she make a GoFundMe then? Not saying that the dad didn't deserve that, but she literally asked people for money for her dad while saying she did not

I'm gonna get dumped on for this, but here goes. Places like this don't ever anticipate or expect anyone to stay there for more than 3-5yrs. They expect workers to come and go quite often. it's an unskilled, shitty job. I'm actually kinda dumbfounded this guy was there for that long. Is he a manager there now at least? There's so many questions that go beyond how BK treated him, I'm not sure where to begin...

In no way are we asking for money or is he expecting any money but if anyone feels like blessing him, he would love to visit his grandchildren.” That is the definition of asking for money!

I love bootlickers who want to see people not fight for being treated like actual people instead of cogs in a machine. And by love I mean loathe.

Burger King isnt a career job, its a job for kids and young adults. If you work there and recieve a cheap gift for 27 years of working there, WHAT DO YOU EXPECT? Its not a career, its a shitty job... Understand the difference??...

Hard work should be rewarded. Period. Go take your "better than you" attitude and shove it up your a*s.

Perhaps he isn't intellectually proficient enough to progress in the job...or he doesn't have a life outside work?

Or maybe he has bills to pay and some people just stuck with their job, out of scare of unemployment, or they just like it. You do not know this person and your comment is highly insulting.
