Fast food chains tend to occasionally re-define their industry rivalry. As the world is living Pride Month vibes, Burger King decided to troll another famous joint, Chick-fil-A, known for supporting anti-LGBTQ+ groups. Burger King came up with a campaign where they donate a certain amount from each special-edition chicken sandwich sold to their supported foundation fighting for equal rights. This sparked backlash from Chick-fil-A supporters as they took Burger King’s Tweet quite personally.

The Tweet and the aftermath has echoed through the internet, stirring up a few discussions and debates as well as causing a few controversial details about these huge corporations to come out (no pun intended).

Burger King came up with a scrumptious new chicken sandwich to celebrate Pride Month. For every Ch’King sold during this month, the fast food chain will donate 40 cents to Human Rights Campaign, which is America’s largest LGBTQ+ civil rights organization. HRC “envision a world where LGBTQ+ people are ensured equality at home, at work, and in every community.” In the Tweet posted by Burger King last week, not trying to conceal it too much, they added ‘even on Sundays’, which suggests their Chick-fil-A shout-out. It is known for the Christian tradition of Sabbath and not opening its eateries on Sundays.

The posted Tweet has received a lot of praise and criticism since it nonchalantly mentioned Chick-fil-A

A few years ago, Burger King also introduced their ‘Proud Whopper’ to celebrate Pride, where the wrapping was decorated with rainbow colors. The fast food chain has sponsored pride parades in different cities before. HRC has organized protests that were directly against Chick-fil-A as the chain avidly stands by Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Salvation Army, among others, and they were accused of having anti- LGBTQ+ policies.

Burger King has been supporting the LGBTQ+ community and standing in solidarity with groups fighting for the Equality Act

Burger King announced the donation in their statement “this is a community we love dearly and have proudly supported over the years, so we couldn’t miss an opportunity to take action and help shine a light on the important conversation happening.” Chick-fil-A took the message with bitterness, accusing Burger King of mocking Christians.

Chick-fil-A supporters didn’t take the statement from Burger King that well; in fact, they took it quite badly

It was controversially revealed in the past that Chick-fil-A donated money to a foundation that is known for supporting the fight against the Equality Act, which is backed by President Joe Biden. If successful, the act would make it illegal to discriminate against LGBTQ+ people. The conservative chicken fast food joint has a long history of supporting anti-LGBTQ+ groups and although the company said it has cut ties and stopped supporting those foundations, nothing has really stopped them or their gifts to homophobic groups.

As the battle of fast-food chains continues, it is worth mentioning all charitable donations by large-sized companies can, in fact, be beneficial for them. The financial support to organizations can be written off on their taxes and they end up being quite profitable, as long as there is some clever accounting involved. And of course, being in the press and gaining attention is a great contribution to any business, as long as it is positive.
