Fat-Shamed Teenager Just Did The Bravest Thing To Shut Down Bullies
This 13-year-old just did the bravest thing ever. Or shall I say, two bravest things… Paris Harvey not only hit back at her bullies but she did so by facing her biggest fear – stripping down to her bathing suit in public.
The Kent-based teenager suffers from a metabolic condition, which means she gains weight quickly and struggles to lose it. She was also born with hip dysplasia, so her left leg is 1.5 cm shorter than her right and she has pins in her joint which cause her to limp. These two conditions lead to people calling her fat and mocking her for ‘walking like a penguin’.
“I got bullied in the past and after a while, you start to believe what people say. I became really insecure about how I looked,” said Paris. “I can be eating the same food as the next person but I gain weight. It’s not like I’m sitting at home all day eating crisps. But I felt like I shouldn’t have to explain myself.” So, over Bank Holiday weekend, Paris decided to finally face her biggest fear – stripping down to her bathing suit at the beach. And guess what? She not only faced her fear but she embraced it too by taking pictures and posting them on Twitter! The pics went viral with over 337k likes on Twitter. Even though Paris did receive negative comments from people saying she was ‘promoting obesity’, she chose to “focus on the support because hate is nothing compared to love.” “I feel like we should embrace who we are,” Paris said. “I’m not making myself a model but I wanted to show people that it doesn’t matter what size you are – you are born into that body.”

You look so much like my niece, Emily. She was beautiful too. She had a similar metabolic disease and had multiple surgeries when she was a toddler. She had long blond hair and the most beautiful blue eyes, She was a loving, caring child, had the most infectious laugh. She had a heart for others. She spent her preteen years being called all sorts of names. Kids can be cruel. I just can't understand how adults can be so cruel to a child. Emily was killed in a car wreck when she was 10. As a person with crippled metabolism, I can tell you I understand her completely. I eat FAR LESS than other people, in fact I'm jealous of them, because I've never been allowed to binge, and I gain weight. Shaming a person with a MEDICAL CONDITION about their weight isn't bravery, it's assholery, and congratulations to all of you a******s out there, you better just hope you or your kids don't ever run into any sort of problems like that, cause you'll be whining like bitches about how unfair life is then. It's funny how we fat people get shamed the most when we actually indulge in some physical activity. I generally don't have to deal with any fat-shaming despite being similar size as the girl pictured but if I do get some nasty looks and smirks and comments, it's when I go the pool or the gym. I can't see the logic in it. Even if you think that being fat is wrong, shouldn't you appreciate that fat person is doing the only thing that can lead to weight loss?
Agreed, and I'm one of those people who has zero tolerance for people who whine about being overweight (because 99% of them eat poorly and because I understand physics and thermodynamics), but if I see an obese person actually doing something to help themselves in a positive way, like eating plain, raw veggies instead of a bagel, or being physically active there's no way I'd make fun of them, not even in my head to myself. My only thought is "Keep it up!". To attack someone for doing what the should be doing is just ridiculous.

I always wonder about people who feel the need to put down heavy/overweight/ even average weight people online. Like they see a photo of a person and immediately ridicule them and them claim it is because their health. Like what are they afraid is going to happen if an overweight person has self value?
I think it's because media has labeled overweight people like the worst of the worst. And those who fat-shame others are afraid of falling into that label, and by bullying others, they reassure themselves thinking "I'm good... I'm ok.. I'm doing what's right... I am better". I love how humans think people actually care about other humans or their struggles. If you think she "shut down" anyone, you are heavily mistaken my fiend. Those bullies were probably laughing their asses off with those pictures. And at the end of the day she was probably still sad as f**k. In the case of this young lady there are only two choices imo. #1 if she's happy with who she is and those around her are the problem, she just need to beat their asses to the ground, that's how you "shut down" a bully and never get bothered again. Do not let anybody put you down and miss what's out there for you to enjoy just because people are mean. I am 38 and since my late 20s, I have been struggling with being overweight and having a bad hip. I know how it feels. I have been through an agonizing number of diets and the more I tried the bigger I got. I isolated myself and got depressed, do not fall in that hole! You are who you are, and the right people will touch your life in a positive way and appreciate you as a person. Now, from a medical pov, I recommend you try to work a plan together with your doctor and lose weight. I am only saying this (not trying to scare you), because I developed breast cancer and obesity was one of my major risk factors. You do not want that kind of nightmare in your life. You are young and beautiful, you deserve a healthy life that you can enjoy. I was not aware of the damaging effects of being obese on my health, wished somebody warned me. I am fine now but it added more stress in my life.

It's actually some thing people should be thinking about. Some folks have health problems that cause them to either be to heavy or to thin. Fat is one of the biggest societal taboo therefore must be challenged. This is right up there with Lindy West saying 'fat' instead of the usual euphemisms.
While i agree that she should be confident and no other person has the right to bully her with words and shaming her, I can't help but also agree with the fact that she needs to find a way to loose weight, control her weight gaining. It is just simply bad for her health, comes with all kind of diseases. A lot of people have won the weight fight, and so will she, if she puts her mind into it. There was a girl and boy in my year at school a similar size to her, and both were spared bullying. The boy had an amazing sense of humour which people were attracted to, and the girl was super confident so people left her alone. Although fat people will always have people making fun of them, showing that you don't care and being comfortable with yourself goes a long way
It's good to feel comfortable and confident in your body, but I think it's equally important to be healthy. This strong women in the making is inspirational apart from my fear that her life is in jeopardy. She should be able to tell her story for decades to come, to help girls struggling with their confidence to be strong. The message here is wonderful but there's more that could be said.

This is a beautiful young woman, inside and out but some dedicated bariatric physycian teamed with doctors schooled in metabolic conditions should step up and help her, gratis, so ths she will not die an early death. This young woman deserves to live a long life, not as somone model thin girl , but at a healthy weight. She needs help and needs it now. Someone out there should reach out now. I honestly think she's beautiful. And she's living proof that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover because a lot of these people just assumed she was a girl who ate tons of unhealthy food and never tried to lose weight but it turns out if you look deeper you'll find out that she has health issues that makes it easy to gain weight and hard to lose it.
This is kind of a tricky one. Beautiful is a word which is meant to describe how much a person adheres to the current standards of what we find attractive "now". Offcourse it is mean to say she isn't beautiful for whatever reason. However people still use these standards to define a large portion of a potential mate's worth. And relations/intercourse with the opposite sex still is a HUGE portion of ones life. I can understand she is a good human being. But if you take the word "beautiful" literally. She is not. If we use the word as it is intended. I don't mean this the mean way. The problem I think is the fact everyone wants to adhere to these standards. Not with the word beautiful for example.
You are using artificial, shallow, highly commercialised standards that are virtually impossible for most women, and men, to meet. The problem isn't her...it's your and much of society's shallow definitions of beauty. For long periods in history, big women were considered more beautiful.

Yes, it was a brave move to confront her fear, but let's not glorify her condition. Calling her body beautiful is obviously an exaggeration. I hope her treatment goes well, because metabolic conditions are treatable. Obviously she will have to "work harder" than others in order to achieve her ideal body weight, but it's doable. I have thin arms. I have to work out twice as hard if I want to achieve a nice sculpted arm. Should I fall in complacency and glorify my thin arms? I don't think so. I'm on my way to the gym. When life gives you lemons, you work harder an make a lemonade. Calling the lemon sweet won't do the trick.
There are plenty of people who find her attractive. You do not have to go out of your way to claim otherwise. It's funny how we fat people get shamed the most when we actually indulge in some physical activity. I love how humans think people actually care about other humans or their struggles. If you think she "shut down" anyone, you are heavily mistaken my fiend. Those bullies were probably laughing their asses off with those pictures. And at the end of the day she was probably still sad as f**k. I am 38 and since my late 20s, I have been struggling with being overweight and having a bad hip. I know how it feels. I have been through an agonizing number of diets and the more I tried the bigger I got. I isolated myself and got depressed, do not fall in that hole! You are who you are, and the right people will touch your life in a positive way and appreciate you as a person. Now, from a medical pov, I recommend you try to work a plan together with your doctor and lose weight. I am only saying this (not trying to scare you), because I developed breast cancer and obesity was one of my major risk factors. You do not want that kind of nightmare in your life. You are young and beautiful, you deserve a healthy life that you can enjoy. I was not aware of the damaging effects of being obese on my health, wished somebody warned me. I am fine now but it added more stress in my life.

There was a girl and boy in my year at school a similar size to her, and both were spared bullying. The boy had an amazing sense of humour which people were attracted to, and the girl was super confident so people left her alone. Although fat people will always have people making fun of them, showing that you don't care and being comfortable with yourself goes a long way
It's good to feel comfortable and confident in your body, but I think it's equally important to be healthy. This strong women in the making is inspirational apart from my fear that her life is in jeopardy. This is kind of a tricky one. Beautiful is a word which is meant to describe how much a person adheres to the current standards of what we find attractive "now". Offcourse it is mean to say she isn't beautiful for whatever reason. However people still use these standards to define a large portion of a potential mate's worth. And relations/intercourse with the opposite sex still is a HUGE portion of ones life. I can understand she is a good human being. But if you take the word "beautiful" literally. She is not. If we use the word as it is intended. I don't mean this the mean way. The problem I think is the fact everyone wants to adhere to these standards. Not with the word beautiful for example.
