Dog Kept On Such A Short Chain She Could Never Rest Her Head Is Finally Rescued And The After Pics Will Bring You Joy

Many people out there treat their dogs like their children, but then there are others, who subjugate these sweet creatures to extremely inhumane conditions. Cala, the guard-dog of a mechanic in San Jose, Costa Rica, was one of those unfortunate pups. Her owner kept her chained up on a chain so short that she had no way of resting her head and could barely breathe. When she was sick the owner wouldn’t take her to the vet and rarely fed her. Fortunately for Cala, her suffering had a positive end.
Concerned neighbors saw the conditions her owner had kept her in for years and reported them to the police as well as the animal shelter Territorio de Zaguates. When she was finally rescued, Cala had to be treated for emaciation, wounds, and malnutrition.
Lya Battle, the founder of Territorio de Zaguates, told the Dodo, “The picture I first saw of her showed a pitiful creature robbed of its dignity and ready to give up — a dog whose spirit had been broken and was just waiting for the end to come while living a never-ending nightmare.” She described the healing process as a slow one, “the humans around her still had to cause her pain through the curing of her wounds, especially the gash in her neck caused by years of hanging from a tight metal chain around her neck,”
Even after her resue Cala would come to endure more abuse at the hands of humans. In June, people snuck into the sanctuary in an attempt to kill some of the dogs with poison sausages. While 16 of the dogs died, this tenacious pup survived. Battle said this was probably in part due to her size and although she suffered some neurological problems Cala’s health returned.
Today Cala is living with a host family and has learned to get along with new humans and dogs alike. “After years of neglect, torture, and imprisonment, Cala seems to be getting all the puppy misbehaving process out of her system and we all think that’s just fine. She is happy, strong, willful, a bit stubborn, and spoiled by her foster mom and family,” said Battle, adding, “This rescue is an epic battle of good against bad and of hate against love, and in the end, as it always does, love wins.
Territorio de Zaguates rescues and shelters hundreds of dogs in Costa Rica with no home so they can “receive lots of affection and socialize with the people and families.” Scroll down below to see pictures of Cala’s transformation!

When she was rescued Cala was so malnourished she couldn’t even stand and was covered with wounds and gashes from being chained up

Her health was so poor that if Cala hadn’t been found when she was she would have died

Nursing her back to health was a lengthy and painful process for the pup

In addition to the pain, she was very mistrusting of other dogs and humans

But the rescue team was not going to give up on her

However, even after her rescue Cala learn again how cruel people can be

Tragically 16 dogs were killed, but Cala managed to survive only suffering from some brief neurological problems

Lya Battle, the founder of Territorio de Zaguates, told the Dodo that she survived due too her size and because she was “Just too tough a cookie!”

Today Cala is living her best life in a new home. “She is happy, strong, willful, a bit stubborn, and spoiled by her foster mom and family,” reported Battle

Even though her story has a happy ending, people were infuriated to hear of her former abuse

It seems that it's impossible to look anywere these days without seeing humans who delight in the spectrum of despicable behaviours, from crass selfishness through to outright cruelty. I'm normally a gentle sort of person, but when confronted with this I think that the best punishment would be the biblical maxim of an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. I for one would feel no sympathy if the owner were hung by a chain like this for the same amount of time that this dog suffered, and fed the same diet.
Same here, you are not alone. Also, if I could find all the people who deliberately poisoned dogs/other animals at some point of their life, I'd not just demand for them to be poisoned the same way, I'd like to watch it happen too.
It was a family member or the person who owned that poor dog.
I agree! I think that this amount of cruelty & hate has been in our world all along...its just we are becoming more aware of it thanks to internet. I believe an eye for eye is superb punishment for animal abusers. There was a guy locally who abused & hoarded large amounts of animals. He was arrested a couple times for sickening abuse & killing of his dogs. He kept them in utter garbage. And yet made the loudest rants to media about being "treated like an animal" because he was kept in confinement 23 hours a day for his protection against the other inmates in jail that wanted to harm him for harming animals.
Even with all that that sweet doggie endured, she looks like she has a renewed spirit and I hope that her new “PARENTS” spoiler her until the day this cutie patie pass away... hopefully not for a long time. I hate animal abusers- they have no heart, no soul!!!
Here, here! +100. This might seem a bit unorthodox and some will disagree but in such cases I like what is often done in Muslim countries, especially in Saudi Arabia...if you steal, they cut off your hand, if you murder someone, off with your head.
i saw the worst worst thing ever - a few months ago - what someone had done to their animal - it still haunts me to this day - i truly wish I had never seen it - and hope the owner rots in hell
AMEN

Your name and the way you speak are you in the right time period? (Btw you make a good point)
They speak normally. The slang and 'cool' words are ridiculous and stupid. Comparing the comments, I think yours shows you MAY need to take a class on grammar and punctuation.
And here I am, feeling guilty for accidentally stepping on my dog's paw... How could people do this to an animal and still sleep at night?!?!?!
I poked one of my dogs in the eye last night when it was dark, reaching out to pet her and then I spent the next 5 minutes kissing her and telling her how sorry I was.
I was opening a door and accidentally smacked my dog because she was lying on the other side. I spent 5 minutes apologising, kissing her, and feeding her treats. I still feel awful about it
@PolarPunk, SO we are, we the pet pawrents, we try to comfort our furbabies, bring them treats to apologize and to comfort them and everything and still feel guilty, while others abuse animals, I´ll never understand how people can do THAT, our furbabies´re our family members, ain´t they???
I apologize to stinkbugs when they land on me and I automatically grab and fling and THEN realize what it was. (I love stinkbugs, I think they're so cute.)
I did that once when it was dark and something flew into my face and I grabbed and flung and IT WAS A LADYBUG! I actually cried!
OMG yes, I stepped on my Norwegian Forest Cat mix Gizzy´s fluffy tail yesterday evening because I simply hadn´t seen him lying below the cat tree with the tail looking out from there, I did my best to comfort im, even his shorthaired Maine Coon mix patchwork brofur Thori came running when he heard Gizzy´s painful meow....
I can't cope even seeing these images. I mean I really can't. The poor dogs. I can't even read the article.
The "after pictures" will never bring you enough joy to get the "before picture" out of your mind and the thoughts of the torture that animal had been subjected to -- evil people in this world
I also skipped some of the comments I just can't. . .
The older you get, the more you will feel that inability to look at or imagine an animal suffering. It took me years to see War Horse and it was only after understanding that Joey makes it thru just fine that I could stand to watch it. It's because animals are pure and this world has become unpure.

Me neither. I don't need to see this on Bored Panda.
