I was homeless for a few years, 2011-2014 , California, age 60. No help from the county Social Services because I was an "Able-Bodied Adult Male". A good friend let me camp (in a tiny trailer I owned) on his commercial property, he had a porta-potty on site I was allowed to use, and I plugged into his electricity for light and for heat during the cold/snowy winter. No running water except for a garden hose during the summer. I was enrolled at the local junior college so I got a student discount rate at our local fitness center and that's where I showered, a couple times a week. Finally got into Veteran's Homeless program in Reno, NV, 2014, found employment, worked until Social Security retirement at age 63. Yeah, I had it relatively posh compared to many if not most homeless, but being homeless is depressing beyond words and extremely difficult to climb your way out of in America.

I have a brother who is a retired veteran who is homeless because he can't find affordable rent. Hopefully he will soon since getting his full retirement pay. But doubtful he could pay for food and car expenses on top of that.

Same. The studio I rented when I was a cook at 21 was $400 a month. It now goes for $1600+. I make 3x what I did and I cannot afford to live without a roommate. I have worked in several fields and though the rate of pay has more than tripled the value of the dollar has fallen significantly more than that.

There are definitely lazy people out there. It may be a term that's applied wrong in many, even most cases, but not all. There will always be people who want things they didn't earn. That's why we have billionaires.

RN I'm reading a book where a pirate character is like "We're doing a favor to the economy! We steal from the rich, who only hoard their wealth, distribute it among us, and then we spend the money like a stimulus!" Hard to argue with that logic.

Capitalism solves problems, too - just not social ones. Similarly a mainly socially oriented system will run into problems that capitalism offers approaches to solving. The more exclusive either of them are, the more severe and "unsolvable" the problems will become. We need a mix and case to case decisions, correcting the course now and again before drifting into extremist waters.
