These Brothers Recreated The Whole Movie Of “Toy Story 3” And It Took Them 8 Years

Most of us love animated movies. Disney, Pixar, and many others have created amazing films that warm our hearts to this day. However, some are bigger fans than the rest. Like these two brothers for example. Morgan and Mason McGrew, 23 and 20 years old, took 8 years to re-create one of their favorite movies – “Toy Story 3”.

“Inspired by the incredible artists at Disney and Pixar, my brother and I wanted to create a tribute to our favorite film franchise while also practicing our media creation skills,” – Morgan told Bored Panda. The recreation is quite impressive. The smallest details are thought through. They show their love for the movie in a spectacular way. Have you ever been so inspired by something that you just had to show the world or create something that represented that love?

When asked what inspired them to remake “Toy Story 3”, they told Bored Panda: “Toy Story 3 has always been our favorite film. When my brother and I were in high school, we decided to practice our filmmaking skills while paying tribute to our favorite film.” They said that a lot of self-discipline kept them going, “We had to strictly hold ourselves accountable for the work in order to ensure the project would get completed.”

Movie versus remake

They posted their progress on their YouTube channel. The trailers themselves got about 2.5 million views while the full remake currently has about half a million. The brothers did an impressive job even though they didn’t have all the money that Pixar had creating the movie. Almost immediately after they uploaded the video, it was copy strike claimed due to Disney’s copy strike laws. However, the brothers submitted a statement through YouTube and soon Disney lifted the claim.

The brothers shared that the hardest part was securing a filming place for the “dump” scene, they tried to get an actual dump for hours but didn’t manage to. That’s why they had to create a dumpster from scratch. When asked if they are happy with their work, they said: “We are absolutely proud and satisfied with our work. I don’t think we would have done anything differently. I think everything worked out the way it was meant to.”

The brothers started this project after seeing “Toy Story 3” in the movie theater. They began collecting every single toy from the films. You could say the siblings became a little obsessed. They wanted to thank the creators of their favorite film in some way so the live-action project began.

The brothers don’t have any future plans to remake other movies, they mentioned that they need to get back to their lives and their other creative work. However, doing this project let them experience childhood once more, “We don’t play with toys anymore, but this project gave us one last opportunity to “play” with our favorite characters—just like Andy does at the end of ‘Toy Story 3.'”

“Toy Story 3” was released in 2010. To this day, it’s one of the most popular Pixar movies, bringing in a whopping 1 billion dollars at the box office. In this part of the franchise, the owner of the toys (Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and many others) leaves for college and the toys are faced with the sad reality of kids growing up and not caring about them anymore.

“Many stop motion shots in the film would take over 5 hours straight to complete. The longest was 8 hours, I believe. We would always listen to our other favorite films or TV shows such as Monsters Inc., Ratatouille, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Mad Men, and The Office to keep us sane. Haha” – said the brothers when asked to share a funny story or experience while filming.

The re-creation of this film was not easy. The two brothers had a lot of work and planning to do. Morgan and Mason used stop motion and many other techniques while recreating the movie. They had to analyze the movie scene-by-scene so that they would get it right. The brothers didn’t have the technology or the editing software Pixar had, so they used their phones and other simple equipment to do this. They synced up what they filmed with the original soundtrack of the movie.

The actors in the remake were all Morgan’s and Mason’s friends and family members. The dedication they and their family showed for 8 years is astonishing. Hopefully, their hard work will inspire others to not give up on their dreams and achieve their goals no matter how long it takes or how hard it gets! What do you think about this re-creation?

Wow! Very creative! And for those of you saying it's pointless, just don't comment. Your comment is what's pointless. These kids spent 8 years working on something that they were passionate about and grew creatively together. They grew their creativity and relationship by having fun. Nothing pointless about that.

Not to mention they learned a lot of movie techniques, and got a lot of experience setting sets up etc-- experience they can draw on and expand by making their own stuff now if they like... maybe they can pursue their passion and go into movie making etc. Not a waste at all.

Just brilliant! The original came out the year my son was born. It was his absolute favorite movie, along with my two daughters a couple years older than him. Even I loved it. Imagine our joy when they released part 2 and then part 3 was released one year after my first grandchild was born. Of course the trilogy was purchased for both homes and celebrated the joy of toy's adventures again for years now with my grandson. Your version is incredibly special ❤️. You've done stunningly beautiful work and brought it to life with humans. Congrats on a job well done 👏👏👏!
