People Are Cracking Up Over This Thread Where A British Person Lists 50 American States And What They’re Famous For

Interview With Author

Knowing how many states there are in the US is one thing, but listing them out one by one, especially if you’re not American, may be a mission (nearly) impossible. But one Twitter user who goes by the handle @human_not_bees decided to take this task even further and list all the states, one by one, in alphabetical order, for what they are known for.

But there’s one but. The person saying they’re British is one. And, there’s no googling involved in the undertaking. The result? Well, see it yourself below, but people are cracking up badly, some say it’s spot-on, while others say they are not crazy about speaking in generalizations. Still, the thread amassed 80.5k likes and counting, and who doesn’t like a little glimpse into how foreigners feel about the beloved land of the free?

Also, scroll down for Bored Panda’s interview with the author of this thread, known by the name Beës, who was happy to share how he got the idea for guessing the states, as well as the differences he finds between British and Americans.

This British Twitter user is going viral for listing all American states for what they think they’re known for but without googling

In an email interview, Beës told us that he got the idea for the thread while talking to some of his Twitter friends when someone said they knew “all the UK accents” because they’d visited the UK and driven around. “I thought if the bar was that low for claiming you knew about a country, then I’d test my knowledge of US states,” Beës recounted.

“I used a list of the states so I had them in alphabetical order and didn’t miss any, but I didn’t look any up,” the author said.

When asked where he got all the details about the states, Beës said it all comes down to America’s media. It’s “pretty pervasive, and we see enough of it that we learn these things from TV shows and movies. Also, you guys have some pretty cheesy TV that seems very willing to lean into the stereotypes of people and places, so really, you guys did this to yourselves,” Beës added.

Beës also said that he’s only been to New Mexico, and when asked to pick his favorite states, he replied: “I guess wherever AOC is from (New York?). You guys need some socialism, trust us—we’ve got some and it’s great. Also, I think that’s where Björk lives now, which instantly makes it the best state,” he added.

Beës runs a Twitter page @human_not_bees where he shares daily insights with a currently growing audience of almost 10k. But according to him, Twitter is a weird place since “you never know what’s going to be popular.”

“I wrote this tweet in the morning in the UK thinking it would pass under the US radar as you would mostly all be asleep, and it would just make people in Europe chuckle and a few of my US followers when they saw it later. When it took off, it was surprising.”

The author said that it was “nice to see the ‘I live here and this is correct’ replies, and that I hadn’t upset people too much. It didn’t really take off until Sunday evening. I played D&D with some Twitter friends for about 4 hours and when we were done, my phone was at 12% battery from the notifications.”

The thread blew up on social media and Beës had to mute the thread and replies initially “because it was a huge overload of replies and information.”

Once he got back at it, he also got a lot of DMs correcting him about his information.“I think maybe they missed the point. My favorite correction was a person who was clearly stoned trying to explain to me that Colorado didn’t invent weed,” Beës laughed.

When asked about fundamental differences between British and Americans, Beës first mentions humor. “British humor is more self-deprecating. I think we have a higher tolerance for both mocking others and being mocked. Just compare the US and UK versions of The Office. Saying that, The Office US is my favorite of the two.”

“For you guys, I think American exceptionalism is a fundamental difference—the idea that a few of you guys hold where you are the world’s greatest country and sometimes doubling down on that with believing you’re ‘god’s chosen nation’ gets an eye-roll from us over here in Europe. You’re pretty ok, but honey, no,” Beës concluded humorously.

I think people commenting are rather missing the point. Outside of the US little is known of what each state would be famous for and most would be hard pressed to name them. Some haven't even been heard of. Given that it's just a light hearted funny list, please get a sense of humour folks!!

A lot of offended people are taking this too literally. it's a series of short jokes reflecting stereotypes as much as anything. It's not meant to be what the poster actually knows about these states.

We should be impressed by a British person that knows a little about many of the US states. A lot of Americans (not all) have no clue where most countries are located, or the fact that they even exist...

Ok: btw there’s a West Virginia and a normal Virginia because the west bit wanted to become part of the union in the civil war, while the rest wanted to remain a confederate state. So they split.

I cried super hard one night about living in Florida. I went on a rant the BP had ruined our oysters, Nestle had destroyed our rivers, DeSantis ruined the ocean, farm run off gave us algae blooms that smell so bad people sold their houses or couldn't go outside. I cried "They took our rivers, oysters, and oceans and all that is left is huge ass roaches and Trump."

My neighbor is still waving his gaudy a**Trump flags all over his lawn. It's infuriating to see every time I walk out my front door :-/ And don't even get me started about DeSantis, Gaetz, Rubio, Scott and others. Yuck!

These are pretty spot on and funny. I live in Colorado; until weed came along we were all just a bunch of cowboys. Let me try the United Kingdom, another collection of independent states working together. To the best of my knowledge, Northern Ireland is like the rest of Ireland but they like orange instead of green. Hates England and likes to drink. To the best of my knowledge, Scotland is where Braveheart was from and the men all wear skirts. Hates England and likes to drink. To the best of my knowledge, Wales is where Prince Charles is from and they actually don't have any whales. Hates England and likes to drink. To the best of my knowledge, everyone hates England and they like to drink.

A lot of mixed comments! I think people have to try and think about how others form their opinions. If I based it from American TV and Films, I would draw the same conclusion for a lot of these, but most I wouldn't know about. I have a great love of food so could probably do a similar list guessing the states most popular dish. Americans also have to realise that most other countries do not see you as a series of states, rather we see you as a country, a whole. I know a lot of (younger) people that think America consists of New York (City), Hollywood, Disneyland and the wilderness. I'd love to see a list of the counties of England or Ireland from an American perspective.

Canadian here. I found a list and I'm afraid it's not very amusing (but I've always been terrible at geography). Most I haven't heard of, a few (like Bristol, Essex, and Kent) I've heard of but can't think when or why, and several of the 'shires I am guessing are the location or origin of things I've heard of (Nottinghamshire for Robin Hood, Worcestershire for the sauce, Cambridgeshire & Oxfordshire for the universities, Buckinghamshire for the palace). Cornwall might be where Torchwood takes place? Sussex sounds really familiar, maybe that's where Downton Abbey is? And Suffolk sounds super familiar as well. Sorry, I don't think I'm even going to take a stab at Ireland...

How does it compare to other cheeses, from (for example) Switzerland or France? Or Germany even? Because I can stand in front of a cheese-stand on my market and there's not one American cheese on the menu, but buttloads of other ones. To be fair - that might be just because of the transport-issues, so I'm honestly curious how the cheese in Wisconsin is like.

these are accurate. Indiana is also famous for the Martinsville Candy Factory (i think that's what it's called). Located in arguably the worst town ever (and I say this having been there every single year except this one), the candy is delicious. Also, do not confuse Frasier with Frazier Mountain Park, that town in California that banned people for coming to see the snow. Missouri is so awful from what I hear that in the accent of someone from Missouri, it sounds like "misery". But hey! California is so great! We produce a hecc ton of food, and LA is the best city in all of North America.

HOW I BECAME RICH, FAMOUS AND PROTECTED: +1(601) 228-2602 Dear brothers, I wonder if there is anyone else who is just as curious and naïve as I was a few years ago. I had always felt it was insane to imagine that an ordinary person could attain wealth, fame, and yet power all at once. I have seen quite a number of them and I knew deep down there would always be a price to pay. Paying the price wasn’t my fear but how exactly to go about paying the price has been my major quest. I was much determined to be an elite in my society and have what it takes to be in power. I imagined the lifestyle of Jay Z and heard a lot of rumors about Kanye too. I heard about their connection with Illuminati and then I held my determination to pay the dues to be in that caucus. I had no much clue but I had with me the name Illuminati which would later be my liberation. Quite a lot has been said on the internet, but you won’t give up when you are in the quest for greatness. I have found the truth but on

Umh, I'm not American but I can understand why some people find this offensive. This person has a quite restrict knowledge and his attempt to make some funny posts have failed, at least in my opinion. I would have said that Louisiana is famous for the French Quarter of New Orleans and the different mix of cultures that creates wonderful cuisine and music. Arkansas is famous for Little Rock (and so the song from "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes") and Tornados. Tennessee with Nashville is the state of music (expecially country) and the birthplace of artist such Elvis and Dolly Parton. Montana and Wyoming are famous for the Yellowstone park and for the ranches. Massachussets is famous for Boston, the high cost of living and the prestigiouse universities. South Dakota is famous for Mount Rushmore. Alaska is famous for the cartoon "Balto", the film/book "Into the wild", the oil and the wonderful landscapes. Alabama is famous for Forrest gump and Rosa Parks. And the list can go on...

Not very funny. A few facts are right but don't believe everything you see in the movies. And even if a few facts are right that does not mean that is all that state is good for.

OMG! Texas! As a Texan, I loved this! Today as I was driving home from work, I saw a truck that was so lifted that there had to be a ladder mechanism of some sort to get in it. And all I could think of was, to quote my son, "Sorry, 'bout your penis bro..." 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I've had cheese from Wisconsin and for real it's pretty good. I know the yellow dye is kinda weird, but if you ever get a chance to try the good stuff, highly recommend. Those dudes are definitely serious about their cheese lol

After visiting your fine state, sir, I concluded that women in the US South wear hats to keep the da*n flying THINGS out of our hair. Once saw a tour guide strip off her hoop skirt to get rid of a "palmetto bug" crawling up her leg. Those are not "palmetto bugs". They are gigantic flying roaches from Hell, and made me miss Ontario's mosquitoes!

these are accurate.

The Brits excel at "if I'm ignorant of something that's proof of it's irrelevance," citing meritocracy, while the slights they themselves suffer are wholly blamed on the class system.
