The United Kingdom has been in quite a pickle for the last couple of years. Since the June 2016 referendum, in which 52% of the country voted to leave the European Union, the UK had been stuck in an endless conflict as well as a political nightmare while the government tried to negotiate the terms with the EU. Even though the government officially announced the country's withdrawal in March 2017, the process was delayed due to deadlock in the UK parliament.

After many failed negotiations, several changes in the parliament and general uproar from the people, the UK left the EU at 11 p.m. GMT on 31 January 2020. And while many people rejoiced, others couldn't hide their shame and disappointment. Oh, and as always, there was a third group of people. The ones who made dozens of memes to make fun of the situation. And that's exactly what we're going to focus on. So scroll down below and check out the spiciest memes and don't forget to vote for your favorites!

Despite the parliament ratifying the withdrawal agreement and the UK officially leaving the EU, things aren't completely done. The 31 January event only began the next phase in the Brexit process which is a transition period that is set to end on 31 December 2020. During that, the UK and EU will negotiate their future relationship, like trade deals and other policies.

While in the transition phase, the UK remains subject to EU law as well as remains part of the EU customs union and single market during the transition. Despite that, the UK is no longer part of the EU's political bodies or institutions.

This is so perfect. One side making it seem perfect, and the other side making it seem terrible. What perfect cloud catches though.

It references the fact that the government may sell off the British health service, and also Brexit was largely motivated by racism and xenophobia, which explains the ‘at least I’m white eh?’ bit. Love this one. Edit: for the people who were unsure about the meaning

UK was never in Euro, and is still part on continental Europe, so this doesn't make sense

It's the first time in history a country has entered trade talks in order to give itself a worse deal than it already has..

I love America, I just dislike Trump with the strength of Hercules, Atlas and 150 proof tequila combined.

I'm in Scotland and there's a BIG shift towards independence now, people want to be independent of the UK and rejoin the EU asap. We voted 60/40 to stay but we were ignored..

I'm surprised Trump hasn't proposed to buy the UK yet and make it a state

I'm from the U.S.--we would never do that to you, England, considering what it's like over here right now.

I don't understand this one. Why is England becoming USA?

Because Economists always said that GB is pretty much divided between Dependence on the EU Market and the US market. Therefore it is also politically dependent on either those two Nations. Now, since they are cutting ties to the EU they are going to have to get closer to the US. Therefore they just shift their dependence. By the way, already in the 80s the UK was talked about being nothing more, but the 51st State of the US. I am sorry, but the Brits can’t compete withe the global Markets of China, the EU or the US. Now they try to become a Tax-Oasis for global companies and in my opinion thats the only chance, they could actually survive without major dependence on either the US or the EU.
