They say there’s no ‘I’ in ‘team’. But some people are selfish, shortsighted, and seem keen to ruin everyone’s day for their own pleasure or gain. Naturally, we call these people jerks. While unpleasant to deal with, your average, run-of-the-mill jerk isn’t usually someone to fear. Not so if they’re your boss.

Good bosses are a godsend, but bad bosses make you pray for divine intervention. Even worse than merely incompetent managers are bosses who love being jerks. Jerk bosses are by far the crème de la crème of all possible types of the species known as jerks.

Bored Panda made this list of the greatest examples of bosses acting like jerks, so you can feel a bit happier about working at your current job, in comparison. So go make yourself some popcorn, grab yourself a drink, and scroll down. Upvote your fave jerk boss stories and let us know if something similar has ever happened to you! Be sure to take a look at Bored Panda’s other stories about jerk bosses, regular everyday jerks, and the vast differences between leaders and bosses.

Unless I’m wrong. I don’t think that means he took the 50 out from your check. But by law they have to disclose it to IRS. So you are going to be taxed on that 50 as income.

There's nothing wrong with this. They are just showing the gift on the pay slip. Monetary gifts are liable to income tax.

Ah ok that does make more sense. I wish they would have labeled it as deductions for tax purposes to employer or something.

it's for tax & income purposes. Since the company has to account for where the $%0 went they probably coded to employee benefits....so the $50 should have been added onto your next paycheck, then deducted. This was it's taxable and they don't run afoul of the IRS for non-taxed compensation. (I do payroll for my company and we have to do the same thing. We'll have little contests like "first one to close a deal" gets $25 or if 100% of your scheduled appointments show up you get $150 cash....but then I have to keep track of those figures & add/subtract them for payroll purposes on the next payday.

I work in payroll, it's not legal to not report the gift cards. Employees are supposed to pay the taxes on the amount of gift cards they receive.

It's being added on to your check so you can be taxed for it (IRS requirement), then deducting it back out so you're not receiving the gift twice.

Was in HR/payroll for many years and it is amazing how many people do not look at their pay stubs. I cant confirm since each company has their own set up or payroll provider, but what this looks like to me is an accounting information, not actual payroll information. You add the GC to the payroll of that employee, but you then negative it to create a zero sum for that employee. The employee's paycheck is never impacted. Please, if you have questions regarding payroll issues because sometimes it can seem confusing to the untrained eye, ask payroll if any confusion over paycheck. Also, make sure all is correctly updated on paychecks, including tax exemptions and address. I be done now lol

Wtf.... I'd alert the human resources person at your company. That can't be legal. Ask innocently if there is a tax thing on the $50 gift card...As a former manager and HR person -in some states - any EMPLOYEE bonus has to be run like a paycheck and get taxed at a different rate. if they say no then ask was it deducted"wrong" on your paycheck? And ask for them to explain themselves

aneewon avatar

AGREE 100% ... The gift card should be shown as a bonus and then the tax figured on the bonus which can be a different [lower] rate. To the person who got a $100 gift card and it was shown as $125 for 'tax purposes" - you are getting screwed by your company. THEY are not withholding $25 in taxes ... they are only paying the percentage of tax they are obligated to withhold, and believe me - it is a LOT less than $25. They are pocketing the difference. I would bring this to the HR dept attention and if they don't cut you a retro check, tell them you will be reporting it to the IRS and state tax board. Or don't tell them and just do it if you think the whistle blowers law will not protect your job.

It's NOT a "gift" if they're taking it from your paycheck, though! Personally, I might consider this a kind of theft (because you EARNED that money & he had NO right to "buy a GIFT" for you; especially when he is taking it out of YOUR pocket without even asking you if it was okay)! I'd consider ALL my options if I were you & think about getting some legal advice. This place sounds like it could be a TOXIC working environment, if your superiors can get away with doing such a thing! SMH. 😥

This is only so You can claim it on your taxes. If you have a tangible gift card in your hand, then the “employee gift” being deducted doesn’t actually take the money away from you, what?

I had something vaguely similar (same principle). I was offered a certain salary (not very high). The job had daily transportation expenses to get from site to site. I later found out that the amount they told me I was going to get paid, included what I was spending for transportation during the workday. And they marked it on the paycheck as 'transportation allowance' - except that it was a part of my promised paycheck, not added on to it. Cheap bas/tards. I quit when they wouldn't give me a promised raise and then wanted to switch me to hourly pay - not counting the hours I spent in travel during the workday. Yowks.

Your mom probably told you to stay away from jerks when you were a kid. However, when we’re all grown up, we can’t always choose our colleagues (and especially not our bosses), as we choose our friends. I’m sure that at one point or another we’ve all met jerks that made us grit our teeth, put on a fake smile and pretend like everything’s just peachy. When all we really wanted to do was Sparta Kick them into a volcano as a sacrifice to the venerable Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Ohio State University researcher Bennett Tepper explained to the Harvard Business Review that “if your boss is hostile toward you, you are going to be less satisfied with your job, less committed to the work. You are more likely to experience psychological distress. We know that performance suffers; we know that people are less helpful when their boss is hostile toward them.” So far, so good.

Tepper and his colleagues checked whether acting aggressively right back at a hostile boss would yield any positive results. Are you ready for the shocking news? No, acting like a jerk to your jerk boss doesn’t create anything of value for you, nor for anyone else. The old adage that two wrongs don’t make a right is absolutely correct. Only, in this case, two jerks don’t make a warm and supportive work environment.
