They say there’s no ‘I’ in ‘team’. But some people are selfish, shortsighted, and seem keen to ruin everyone’s day for their own pleasure or gain. Naturally, we call these people jerks. While unpleasant to deal with, your average, run-of-the-mill jerk isn’t usually someone to fear. Not so if they’re your boss.

Good bosses are a godsend, but bad bosses make you pray for divine intervention. Even worse than merely incompetent managers are bosses who love being jerks. Jerk bosses are by far the crème de la crème of all possible types of the species known as jerks.

Bored Panda made this list of the greatest examples of bosses acting like jerks, so you can feel a bit happier about working at your current job, in comparison. So go make yourself some popcorn, grab yourself a drink, and scroll down. Upvote your fave jerk boss stories and let us know if something similar has ever happened to you! Be sure to take a look at Bored Panda’s other stories about jerk bosses, regular everyday jerks, and the vast differences between leaders and bosses.

Your mom probably told you to stay away from jerks when you were a kid. However, when we’re all grown up, we can’t always choose our colleagues (and especially not our bosses), as we choose our friends. I’m sure that at one point or another we’ve all met jerks that made us grit our teeth, put on a fake smile and pretend like everything’s just peachy. When all we really wanted to do was Sparta Kick them into a volcano as a sacrifice to the venerable Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Whilst you have every right to take vacation time, most business expect more than a few days or a weeks notice.

They do, but it is not necessary. Typically the two week notice is only if you end things on good terms.

maybe give your boss more notice than “this week”. most people book their vacations months in advance so they don’t inconvenience others with an increased workload due to a hasty decision like “imma just whip off this week on vacation” you know - it’s called being considerate. try it some time

I once quit a job when i didn't have a new one lined up because the work environment had just become toxic. It was so toxic, that when I put in my three weeks notice, they told me to stay home and they would pay me for those three weeks. Within those three weeks, I found a better job that paid over 50% more.

If you're taking a week off, you should give a lot more advance notice. Not just text them "oh can I take the week off this week? You know...vacation time"

Actually, I'm with the boss on this. You can't expect it to take unsheduled holiday 'this week'. You have to schedule time off in advance. If it's not emergency leave, getting told 'it's not a good time' is perfectly reasonable. Try sheduling your vacation days a month in advance.

I used to work for LCA and before I had to put in almost 6 months to 1 year in advance to get time off... That is until the last 6 months that I worked there when I was transferred to work under my third supervisor who was AMAZING and offered me an extra day off for bereavement when I only asked for 1 (my grandparents died within 2 months of one another and I only asked for a day following my grandfather's death and 1 Friday for the memorial honoring them both, but he offered me Monday as well- Shout out to Rob)

I don't want to oppose your right for holiday or anything like that but asking for it in just 1 week in advance? it's a very short time - no wonder he is not ready to let you go. I think it depends on the occupation but it must be at least 2 weeks before you want your vacation.

So wish I could quit my job. I have Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday off - I need the Monday off that's in the middle ...my company said it's not possible because Monday is their busiest and needs me in work. I asked if I could do a shift swap and they said everyone is in so I can't swap with anyone and they refuse to swap with one of my other days off. I asked if I could come in early for other shifts to work the hours then...nope. I have plenty of holiday hours in the pot but my company is refusing. :-(

Maybe just plan your vacation ahead of time? Like, at least a month in advance? If I were the boss, I wouldn't just give my employees the week off whenever they ask for it. Of course it's never a good time this way. Think this is a fake one anyway.

Ohio State University researcher Bennett Tepper explained to the Harvard Business Review that “if your boss is hostile toward you, you are going to be less satisfied with your job, less committed to the work. You are more likely to experience psychological distress. We know that performance suffers; we know that people are less helpful when their boss is hostile toward them.” So far, so good.

“I have found no upside whatsoever to a boss being hostile, even though there is a lay belief out there that if you kind of kick people a little bit, maybe you can get them motivated. Tepper and his colleagues checked whether acting aggressively right back at a hostile boss would yield any positive results. Are you ready for the shocking news? No, acting like a jerk to your jerk boss doesn’t create anything of value for you, nor for anyone else. The old adage that two wrongs don’t make a right is absolutely correct. Only, in this case, two jerks don’t make a warm and supportive work environment.
